The Book of 2 Peter

Chapter 2

Apostasy brought in by false teachers

We have seen in chapter 1, the force of the light of Jesus Christ that draws men away from the world and toward God. Now Peter will talk about the force that impels people toward the world. It is a powerful force that pulls the world away from the Word of God. The days that Peter is talking about in this chapter are here with us today! APOSTASY!!!

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. (KJV)

But there were false prophets also . . . the apostle Peter has been encouraging and urging his readers to continue and progress in their faith. Now here, he cautions and warns them that there are false teachers in their midst, and he does not want them to stray from the Truth that has been instilled in them, to follow these false teachers who are NOT bringing the Truth of God, but instead "damnable heresies" backed by the devil himself and his children (1 John 3:10; Eph.2:2-3). Peter says that these false teachers deny the Lord Jesus, Who paid for their sins with His life, and their end is swift destruction (2 Thes.1:8-9; Rev.20:15). Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (KJV)

The Word of God has MUCH to say on false teachers and false doctrines. Check out the following Scriptures! BEWARE my friend. We today are invaded by these smooth talking wolves bringing nice sounding word that will lead you to HELL!
Teachers of false doctrine: (Isa.5:20-24; 9:16; 30:9-10; 43:27; Jer.23:16-17; 28:16; 29:32; Eze.13:6-7; Mat.5:19; 15:9,14; 24:23; Luke 6:39; 11:52; 17:23; Acts 15:24; 20:29; 2 Cor.11:4,13; Gal.1:9; 5:8; 1 Tim.1:7; 4:2; 6:3-5; 2 Tim.4:3-4; Tit.1:11; 2 Pet.2:1; 2 John 1:10; Rev.2:2)
False doctrine: (Pro.19:27; Isa.30:9-10; 32:6; Jer.23:16,32; Eze.13:10; 22:28; Mat.4:6; 16:12; Mark 7:7; 8:15; Luke 12:1; Acts 20:30; 2 Cor.11:4; Gal.5:9,20; Eph.5:6; Col.2:8; 1 Tim.1:3; 4:1; 6:20; 2 Tim.2:17; Tit.3:10; Heb.13:9; 2 Pet.2:1; 3:17; Rev.2:14)
Heresies: (Mat.15:9; Acts 15:24; 24:14; Gal.5:20; 1 Cor.11:19; 1 Tim.4:1; Tit.3:10; 2 Pet. 2:1; 3:17)
Seducers: (Deut.13:5,8,13; 2 Ki. 21:9; 2 Chron. 33:9; Pro.12:26; Isa.19:13; Jer.23:27; Eze.13:10; Mic.3:5; Mal.2:8; Mark 13:22; Acts 8:11; 20:30; Gal.5:10; 1 Tim. 4:1-2; 2 Tim.3:13; 4:3-4; 2 Pet. 2:18; 1 John 2:26; Jude 1:4; Rev.2:20)
Work of Deceivers: (2 Chron.18:5; Pro.12:20; Jer.14:13; 27:14; 28:11; 29:21,31; Eze.13:4,22; 22:28; Dan. 2:9; Zec.10:2; Mat.24:11,24; 28:14; Mark 13:6; Acts 8:9; 19:13; 20:30; Rom.16:18; 2 Cor.2:17; 11:13; Gal.1:7; 3:1; Eph.4:14; Phil.1:16; Col.2:4,18; 2 Tim.2:18; 3:13; Tit.1:10; 2 Pet.2:3,17; 1 John 2:18,26; 4:5; 2 John 1:7; Jude 1:4; Rev.2:2; 18:23)

I, like Peter, hate false teachers and their damnable heresies! They lead only to an eternal and agonizing Hell. See some of our articles: . . . http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_1_false_teachers.1.htm . . . http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_false_doctrines.htm . . .

2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. (KJV)

And many shall follow their pernicious ways . . . ways of error that end with destruction. These false teachers and those who follow them, shall bring destruction upon themselves by their heresies. Pernicious = destructive, deadly, evil, malicious, wicked.

By reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of . . . these false teachers and their followers, speak evil of the Way of Truth which is nothing else to me, but blasphemy . . . but even so, many follow their immoral ways.

The way of truth . . . is the TRUE Gospel, so called because it is the doctrine of saving Truth. It is called the (or this) way (Acts 9:2; 19:9; 22:4); the way of salvation (Acts 16:17); the way of God (Acts 18:26).

Shall be evil spoken of . . . again I say, any time anyone speaks evil of the Truth, that is blasphemy, whether it be false teachers, their followers or unbelievers (Rom. 2:24; 1 Tim. 6:1; Tit. 2:5; Jam.2:7).

False followers (professing Christians, hypocrites) will go after false teachers. This is why that I always say "TRUE" Christians. I do not think that TRUE Christians can be permanently deceived. I believe that God allows these cults and false teachers in order to draw away the TRUE church from that which is false, because only those who are hypocrites will believe heresies. I think that is what Paul said would take place. 1 Cor. 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. (KJV) . . . Heresies have to exist, to prove who the TRUE believers are. In other words, the TRUE child of God will NOT follow a false shepherd.
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. (KJV)
John 10:5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. (KJV)

There are millions who say "I'm a Christian." BUT . . . a person CANNOT be a TRUE Christian unless they have Christ in their heart and live a life pleasing to God. A person cannot PROFESS to be a Christian, unless the POSESS Christ in their heart.

Millions of professing "Christians" in today's world do NOT live as the Word of God tells them to live. They go along with the world, they follow the "pernicious ways" of the multitude of false teachers who teach "damnable heresies."

Millions of "Christians" live in sin, practicing sin, continuing in sin (1 John 3:8). They live together without being married. THAT is sin to God, that is fornication (Mat.5:32; 19:9; Mark 7:21; Acts 15:20,29; 21:25; Rom.1:29; 1 Cor. 5:1; 6:9,13,18; 7:2; 10:8; 2 Cor.2:21; Gal.5:19; Eph.5:3; Col.3:5; 1 Thes.4:3; Heb.12:16; Jude 1:7; Rev.2:14; 9:21).

Millions more, and increasing daily, are homosexuals, thinking that lifestyle is acceptable to God. It is NOT acceptable to God!(Gen.19:4-5; Lev.18:22; 20:13; Rom.1:26-27; 1 Cor.6:9-11; 2 Pet.2:6; Jude 1:7). GOD DOES NOT CHANGE!

And this has to be included, it just came over Fox news. 332,000 abortions were performed by Planned Parenthood in 2009. Millions of our dollars each year go to this from our government! THAT is MURDER! (Ex.20:13; Deut.5:17; 27:25; Ps.10:8; (murder the innocent) Jer.7:9; Hos.4:2; Mat.5:21; 19:18; Mark 7:21; 10:19; Luke 18:20; Rom.13:9; 1 Tim.1:9; James 2:11; 1 Pet. 4:15; 1 John 3:15; Rev.21:8; 22:15).

See our article on Abortion, it is sickening how doctors KILL innocent babies: . . . https://hisservants.org/tl_abortion_h_s.html

The Lord Jesus said: John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (KJV) . . . TRUE Christians will NOT follow a false shepherd! When you see people follow after one of these false teachers, they are being deceived because what they are hearing is NOT what they SHOULD hear, but what they want to hear, nice, smooth things!
Isaiah 30:9-10 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: 10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: (KJV)
2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (KJV) . . . That time is HERE!

2 Peter 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. (KJV)

And through covetousness . . . greed is a prevailing vice among false teachers. With them it is me, me, me! All they want is a growing bank account, to gain popularity among the people so mre money can come in, and vain glory. All glory rightfully belongs to God, but that glory they want for their own and covet it to no end. Some of today's modern day wolves amass huge riches to themselves, and with most of them, it seems their desire, their lust for more just cannot be satisfied.

See: . . . http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_cults_rich_preachers.1.htm

Shall they with feigned words . . . deceitful speeches, which have a pretense of Truth, just to hide their errors. The words they speak are of their own making, NOT anything that the Holy Spirit teaches. They bring their pernicious doctrines with new words and phrases, NOT from God's Word, and thus should always guarded against, for they bring flattering words and nice speeches, that are just words of vanity, that will lead you to Hell!

Make merchandise of you . . . false teachers treat the souls of men, just as merchants do with their goods, carry them to market and sell them. In other words, false teachers deal with the souls of their followers, draw them in, then sell them to Satan. False teachers are the children of the devil (Acts 13:10; 1 John 3:8,10; Eph.2:2; 5:6; Col.3:6), so they try to please their father, the devil (John 8:44), just like TRUE Christians try to please God (1 Thes.2:4; Col.1:10; 1 John 3:1,22).

Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not . . .in their greed they make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But my friend, God condemned them long ago, their destruction will not be withheld on Judgment Day.

Many people are disturbed about this because they think the wicked are getting by with their sin. That is not so.The psalmist was one of these. But then he said, "I went into the temple of the Lord." What did he learn in the temple? All he learned in the temple was that God is in charge and He will take care of the wicked (see Ps. 73).

Peter and Paul both condemned greedy, lying teachers (1Tim.6:5). Before you send money to any cause, check it VERY carefully. Is the teacher or preacher clearly serving God or is he promoting his own interests, his own bank account? Will the money be used to promote the cause of Christ? Will it bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people?

Greedy false teachers make a profit by telling you damnable heresies, in the Name of Jesus . . . absolute blasphemy! Their Judge is NOT asleep! He is watching their every move. They shall be condemned to Hell . . . unless they change their ways.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; (KJV)

Peter did not say how these angels were wicked. Jude says that they "kept not their first estate" (Jude 6). Revelation 12:7-9 says "neither was their place found any more in heaven". I think these are the angels who chose to go with Lucifer when he opposed God (Eze.28:11-19; Isa.14:12-15; Rev. 12:7-12; 20:1-10). Some believe that Genesis 6:1-3 says that they (angels) "took them wives" of humans. I cannot go along with this.

See our commentary on the Book of Jude, verse 6: . . . http://www.godcannotlie.org/book_of_jude.htm
I have many articles on Hell: Abraham's Bosom, Paradise, Lake of Fire, etc.

God threw these wicked angels into Hell, probably the bottomless pit, a terrible place of punishment. God has sent the wicked angels to a dark place of punishment where they cannot escape, while they await His wrath on Judgment Day when they shall be condemned to the Lake of Fire (Rev.20:10,15). They did live with God in His glory and light when they were created. Now they are FAR away from God, because they chose to go with Lucifer. The final judgment will happen after Jesus has returned to this world, most likely referring to: Rev.20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV)

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell . . . elsewhere called the deep (Luke 8:31), and the bottomless pit (Rev. 9:1; 11:7; 17:8; 20:1,3). Their disobedience brought about tremendous changes: #1. these angels were of the highest among God's creatures, now they are the lowest. #2. their place of abode was before the throne of God with the rest of the angels, now they were thrown down to a disagreeable lower place, which was agreeable to their sin against the Holy Creator God.

And delivered them into chains of darkness . . . Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. (KJV) . . . The misery and horror of their condition, caused by their hard-headed wickedness, would lead to future judgment (Heb. 10:27; Rev.20:10). These shall remain in "chains" until the final vengeance of God comes upon them.

To be reserved . . . these wicked angels are kept very securely, where they CANNOT . . . escape.

Unto judgment . . . speaking of the last day, the time of their full torment, in which the holy wrath of God, which they feel in a great depth now, but shall come upon them to the utmost on Judgment day!

Oh! my dear friend, this is a perfect lesson for mankind! If God did not spare the angels who sinned . . . WHY would He spare you?

2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; (KJV)

And spared not the old world . . . the people in the world that lived in the world before the flood.

But saved Noah the eighth person . . . together with the other seven people: Noah's wife, three sons, and their wives (1 Pet. 3:20). I think Noah is particularly named, because God had a special respect to him.

A preacher . . . set up to be so by Divine authority and commission.

Of righteousness . . . Genesis 6:8-9 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (KJV) . . . I think that it may be presumed that during Noah's long life, he was very faithful in disapproving and condemning the wickedness of his time, and warned the world of the judgment that God was preparing for (Heb.11:7). Personally, I think Noah is an excellent example of FAITH! 120 years (Gen.6:3), he spent building a boat in the middle of a desert, surrounded by nothing but insults, ridicule and blasphemy Gen.6:5). WOW!!!

Bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly . . . the whole multitude of wicked men then living in the world.

God punished the angels, but He punished wicked people too. He flooded the ancient world (Genesis, chapters 6-8). God rescued Noah and his family, but everyone else died. God had warned Noah that he would send a flood. Many do NOT believe the story of the Flood. Believe it friend! It was true!

2 Peter 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; (KJV)

The cities of Sodom and Gomorrha were chief of five, including Admah and Zeboim, Zoar. Zoar, the fifth, was spared for Lot's sake (Gen.14:8; 19:22). Sodom, Gomorrah, Zeboiim, Zoar and Admab, which were situated in the fruitful plain of Siddim, had previously overrun the whole land. Bela is the same as Zoar (Gen.14:2) . . . it was called Zoar after the destruction of Sodom (Gen.19:22)

And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes . . . Gen.19:24-25. Peter now gives us the third example to demonstrate that God shall punish the wicked (Jude 1:7). The word here rendered "turning into ashes," occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It means to reduce to ashes, and then to consume or destroy.

Condemned them with an overthrow . . . punished them with a total rebellion by bringing that destruction upon them because He had condemned them. This country is headed in the exact same direction. Yes, I know, I am one of a very few (Mat.7:13-14) who feel this way. But my friend, God HATES sodomy . . . homosexuality! It is a "abomination" to Him (Lev.18:22; 20:13), and He has NOT changed one little bit since He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for the homosexual uprising! BELIEVE it!

I change NOT (Mal.3:6). God said He would judge wickedness . . . homosexuality IS wickedness, and God CANNOT lie (Tit.1:2).

Making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly . . . God's wrath and vengeance is ready to be poured out upon ALL others who live ungodly. Peter wants to discourage his readers . . . then and NOW, from imitating the sins of those that had so miserably perished (Heb.8:5; Jude 7). God ALWAYS keeps His Word!

God disapproved of the immorality in the past, for which they were punished, and disapproves of the same sins in every age and in every land. The punishment of one wicked man or people always becomes a warning to all others. BEWARE!!!

2 Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (KJV)

And delivered just Lot . . . (Gen.19:16). Peter brings this up to show that God DOES make a distinction between the righteous and the wicked. The wicked shall be destroyed (Mat.13:50; 22:13; 25:46), and the righteous shall be saved (Mat.13:43; John 5:24; 1 Pet.1:4-5). Lot is called just, because he kept himself uncontaminated from the surrounding wickedness. He had maintained the character of an upright and holy man.

Vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked . . . by the corrupt and immoral conduct of all the wicked men around him. For the word "conversation" (Phil.1:27). The absolute corruption of Sodom was open and shameless; and as Lot was forced to see much of it, it pained him deeply. Vexed means that Lot was wearied or burdened. The crimes of those around him sickened him and he found it hard to bear.

The wicked . . . are the ungodly, the unjust, the lawless. These had absolutely NO respect for God or His Holy Word! The wicked were in complete opposition to Lot, whom Peter calls just and righteous.

So, we have:
1. Fallen angels (2 Pet. 2:4).
2. The wicked in Noah's time (2Pet. 2:5; Gen. 6-8)
3. Sodom and Gomorrah (2Pet. 2:6; Gen. 19)
ALL three groups were judged by our Almighty God! Please consider this IF you are living in disobedience to God! You CANNOT win if you go against Him! NO way!

2 Peter 2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) (KJV)

For that righteous man dwelling among them . . . meaning that Lot maintained his uprightness, and did NOT become contaminated by the sins of Sodom. While Lot was living among them, his seeing and hearing and knowing what was going on, troubled his soul. It is the same for the righteous in today's world. Personally, it makes me sick for people to sin against God and never consider that they shall be condemned to an eternal Hell (Rev.20:15), unless they turn from that sin (1 John 1:1-10).

Seeing and hearing . . . the wickedness of Sodom was open and shameless, that Lot not only heard the report of it, but saw them commit it. Isaiah 3:9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. (KJV) . . . This is the same as the USA! Beware people! God shall condemn your sins!

Vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds . . . Lot was tormented in his soul. This went on "from day to day." Why did Lot remain among such a people? Possibly he tried to get them to change their ways. Vexed = tormented, extremely afflicted and troubled his own soul, he had godly sorrow because of their sinfulness.

What can we learn from Lot?

  • #1. He was not contaminated with their wickedness, nor did he conform to their evil customs. We should NOT either!
  • #2. He did not become indifferent to their sin, but his heart was constantly affected and grieved by their depravity (Ps.119:136; Luke 19:41; Acts 17:16). We should be too!
  • #3. His soul was vexed from day to day. It was not just at times that his mind was affected by their conduct, it was a constant thing. True righteousness is not periodical and sporadic; it is constant and steady. It is not just something that occasionally bursts out; it is an ever-flowing fountain. We should really take this into consideration, seeing the sin all about us.

2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: (KJV)

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations . . . God is well able to deliver His people when they are tempted, and He always knows the best way to do it. He sees a way when we cannot, although it is often a way which we would never have thought of. He can step in and destroy the power of the tempter; He can raise up for us earthly friends for us, and one day He shall deliver His people completely and for ever from temptation, by our removal to Heaven (1 Pet.1:4-6).

And to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished . . . just like He does the rebellious angels (2 Peter 2:4). The case of the angels shows that God CAN keep wicked men, as if under bonds, reserved for their final trial in His court. And my friend, even though the wicked SEEM to go free here and now, they are completely under His control, and are kept by Him, meaning their ultimate arraignment.
Psalms 34:15-18 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. 16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (KJV)
Psalms 1:6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. (KJV)

God's KNOWING means not only His infinite wisdom, whereby He is never at a loss, but He knows ALL the many ways that the righteous may be delivered. It also means His love and good will to them, whereby He is always ready and willing to do it.

God knows HOW to deliver the godly; those that walk in obedience to God, as did Lot and Noah. If God spared neither wicked angels nor wicked men, destroying the old world and Sodom, but delivered Lot and Noah, righteous persons; He still has that same wisdom, the same power and the same will to deliver other godly men, AND punish other wicked men.

God knows how to rescue good people. The stories about Noah and Lot show this. God does not prevent difficulties in the Christian life. But He makes Christians strong enough that they can overcome the difficulties (1 Cor.10:13), and gives us comfort and peace within because we know He will never leave us, never forsake us (Heb.13:5). God shall punish all the evil people. They will NOT escape from Him when He finally judges them.

2 Peter 2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. (KJV)

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness . . . this is a very bold and strong statement that Peter makes here. It really means in the defilements . . . the defilements of uncleanness. Peter really is describing people who are really lower than animals. These people seem to delight in everything that is vicious, vile and vulgar. They gobble up this kind of immorality!

And despise government . . . governors, magistrates; as brotherhood for brethren (1 Pet. 2:17-18). Some commentators say that this refers to government here on Earth. I think that since this word occurs so few times in the Word of God, that it really means "dominion." The same word kuriotes is translated "dominion" in Jude 8 and "lordship" in the first chapter of Ephesians. Ephesians refers to spiritual governments, or in other words, these evil ones despise that which is spiritual, that which God has ordained above us.

Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities . . . presumptuous are they means they are daring, daredevils. They blaspheme and think nothing of it! Sound familiar? It is rare that you can turn on the TV and not hear someone blaspheme God. I don't know if it makes them feel big to use such language. Self-willed . . . they are going to do their own thing, no matter what!

They are not afraid to speak evil of dignities . . . the word for "dignities" is actually glories, so it means they speak evil of all that is sacred, all that is holy. WHY do people, men AND women, take God's Name in vain? They do NOT seem to have any fear whatsoever of God!

2 Peter 2:11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. (KJV)

Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might . . . good angels (Jude 1:9). Angels are greater than people are (Psalm 8:5). Angels have more power and they are stronger than the false teachers. But even these powerful angels would not judge the false teachers before the Lord.

False teachers are lifted up with pride, and they do something that angels don't dare to do. In the little Book of Jude, he speaks of a specific instance when Michael the archangel was disputing with Satan about the body of Moses.

Please do not take Satan and his supernatural powers of evil lightly (Eph.6:12-18), and do not become arrogant about how defeated he will be. Although God says that Satan shall be destroyed completely, he is hard at work this very minute trying to make every Christian self-satisfied and ineffective.

Jude 8-11 give some extra details to Peter’s verses. . . . http://www.godcannotlie.org/book_of_jude.htm

2 Peter 2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; (KJV)

Both Peter and Jude call these false teachers some nasty things! Peter says that these apostate false teachers are like wild animals, in contrast to good angels. Natural means as they are led by their natural instincts, following the lust of their natural appetites and passions. The power of their natural appetites, did not allow their reason or conscience to kick in with any constraint whatsoever. Brute means without reason; irrational. Man has reason, and SHOULD allow it to control his passions; the brutes have no rational nature, so it is to be expected that they will act out their desires without restrain.

They "speak evil of the things that they understand not." This, that Peter says of false teachers, can also be applied to many others. Something that amazes me is how smart some men who are not Christians are, and yet they simply cannot understand the Word of God.

Speak evil of the things that they understand not . . . meaning the great mysteries of the Gospel, of which they are foolishly ignorant. Instead they follow the inclination of their own corrupt natures, and speak against God.

And shall utterly perish in their own corruption . . . shall be utterly destroyed by their own error and folly. The end result is that as brute beasts, which have no reason, follow their brutish appetite, until it leads them into utter destruction, for where they sought their meat, they find instead, their death (Pro.7:23).

False teachers pretend that they know a lot about God. But in reality, they knew very little about Him or His ways (Isa.55:8-9). They were not, and are not, humble like the angels. Instead, the false teachers were/are like vicious animals. Animals have natural desires, but have NO moral standards. They do what they feel like doing. In the end, God will condemn and destroy the false teachers. They will not live for ever with Him.

2 Peter 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; (KJV)

And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness . . . I think this means all the many sins they are charged with, and the appropriate payment for their wickedness shall be seen on Judgment Day. Evil and immoral people do not always receive the due payment of their deeds in this present life . . . but, when the wrath of God becomes quite clear, they SHALL get what they deserve. God's justice will be rendered to EVERY person on Judgment Day, and the punishment they receive shall be just and right!

As they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time . . . people are very wicked and shameless, for only these would have indecency to revel in the day (Isa.3:9; Jer. 3:3; Hos. 5:5; Jude 1:13; Phil.3:19). Sin is now out in the open, in broad daylight! NO shame whatsoever! Judgment awaits (Pro.1:31; 8:36; Jer.2:19; Rom.1:27). These never think of eternity, but simply spend every day of their life in their ungodly pleasures, placing their happiness in present enjoyments, completely unmindful of a future judgment and an eternal state.

Spots they are and blemishes . . . not only have they totally polluted themselves, but they defile others with them as they go. Spots and blemishes they are to the church, where they profess to be members.

Sporting themselves with their own deceivings . . . they not only make a sport of sin, and please themselves with it; but agrees with Jude 1:12 . . . feeding themselves on their lusts without fear. They slyly deceive you, pretending love in their feasting with you, when they do it only to gratify their appetites, with the false pretence of which they covered their immorality.

Spots and blemishes that are like a filthy blotch on a pure white garment, or a deformity on a beautiful person. They are a scandal and disgrace to the TRUE Christian.

In verses 13-14 we see in the description of apostates the utter corruption of the human heart. When a man thinks wrong, he acts wrong, that is fact. Yet there are millions who say, "This is my life. I can live it as I please."

2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: (KJV)

More harsh language here, that Peter uses in speaking of false teachers! They all are guilty of all of these immoral excesses. God does intend to judge them someday.

Having eyes full of adultery . . . Peter mentions the eyes, because they let in the objects of lust into the heart (Mat. 5:28), and because the signs of lust in the heart appear especially in the eyes (Gen.39:7; Pro.6:25). This speaks of the wretchedness of wicked men's hearts, because everything starts in the heart (Mat.12:34-35; 15:19). They have images of sinful acts continually before their eyes. They are drunk with their imaginations of lustful sexual acts.

That cannot cease from sin . . . NOT satisfied with just looking. Some sin might inflame their lusts; or still seeking with wanton looks to entice others to folly.

Beguiling unstable souls . . . tempting them to embrace their false doctrines, promising them pleasures and carnal liberties (2 Pet. 2:18-19); and enticing them to lewdness, by instilling false doctrines into them, which lead to immorality. Many followers are NOT well grounded in the faith and doctrine of holiness, and are easily drawn aside. They seduce the innocent, unwary and inexperienced, to surrender their purity.

An heart they have exercised with covetous practices . . . a heart wholly intent upon getting gain, accustomed to it, and highly skilful in it. Covetous practices always mean greed! These seducers had many different ways of exercising their covetousness . . . getting money!

It goes on BIG time today! . . . http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_cults_rich_preachers.1.htm

Cursed children . . . children of the curse, for such as were worthy of a curse, as children of wrath (Eph. 2:3; 5;6; 6:4. Col.3:6).

2 Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; (KJV)

Which have forsaken the right way . . . apostates, backsliders; leaving the strait path (Mat.7:13-14) of honesty and integrity. Christianity is often represented as a strait path, and to do wrong is to go out of that path in a crooked or broad way.

Following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor . . . meaning that they imitated Balaam. Peter refers to the love of gain, greed, covetousness and inducing others to sin.

The right way . . . is the way of truth (2 Pet. 2:2), the way of faith and holiness (Rom.1:16; 3:22; 3:25; 3:28; 4:24; 9:33; 10:9-10; 11:20; Gal.2:20; 3:14,22; Eph.1:12,15; 2:8-9; 3:12). It is also the fear of God (Ps.2:11; 33:8,18; 34:9; 96:9; 103:11-13; 111:10; 115:13; 119:120; 128:1-2; Pro.3:7; 8:13; 9:10; 14;:2; 15:16; 16:6-8; Mat.10:28; Luke 12:5; Rom.11:20; Rev.14:7). . . . The RIGHT way is the only right way to peace and happiness.

Are gone astray . . . into the paths of error. There is ONLY one right way, but many wrong ways! Do NOT be tempted to wander and leave that right Way! Peter seems to allude to Balaam (Num. 22:1-41), who left the way of God . . . which was to be obedient to God and His Word.

Who loved the wages of unrighteousness . . . the reward which Balak offered him for the unrighteous act of cursing God's people. SO many of today's false teachers love "the wages of unrighteousness."

See: . . . Rich Preachers . . . http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_cults_rich_preachers.1.htm

Consider: Following the way of Balaam:

  • #1. False doctrine: Balaam was disobedient to God and His command (2 Pet. 2:15).
  • #2. Balaam forsook the way of Truth recorded by God in His Word.
  • #3. Balaam taught Balak to entice the children of Israel to commit fornication, and eat things sacrificed unto idols (Num.25:1-9; Rev. 2:14); and taught men to commit lewdness, and indulge in sexual lust.
  • #4. And Balaam was greedy, loved the wages of unrighteousness (2 Pet. 2:15; Num. 22:7,17,37; 24:11).

2 Peter 2:16 But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet. (KJV)

But was rebuked for his iniquity . . . Peter seems to want to show that God used the very extraordinary means of causing the ass on which he rode to speak, because Balaam's iniquity was so horrible. If God went to such an extraordinary way to rebuke Balaam's wickedness, it should be expected that God would in some way show His sense of wrath for the wickedness of those who resembled Balaam . . . then and NOW!

The dumb ass, speaking with man's voice . . . (Num.22:28). God seems to have planned that both Balaam and Balak should be convinced that the children of Israel were HIS people. It was very important that this certainty should rest totally on the minds of the nations through whom they passed, that He would not allow even a 'pretended' prophet to make use of his influence to curse them.

To convince Balaam of the error of his way, and to make him come to his senses that God was definitely watching what Balaam did, and to induce him to utter only what God should direct, nothing would be better fitted than this miracle. The very animal on which Balaam rode was dumb and unwise, but was made to speak a reproof to Balaam . . . a reproof directly from Heaven!

Consider some things about this miracle:

  • #1. It was just as easy for God to perform this miracle as any other;
  • #2. It was a miracle that would be very effectual, and to answer the purpose, as any other.
  • #3. NO man can prove that it could not have occurred; and NO man can prove that it did not happen!
  • #4. The occasion was one that demanded rebuke, and in a way that got Balaam's full attention.

Forbad the madness of the prophet . . . meaning the mad or perverse plan of the prophet. Madness here, properly means, aside from a right mind, or out of his right mind. It is not found elsewhere in the New Testament. Balaam was engaged in a plan backed by a headstrong disposition; and acting contrary to reason and common sense. Balaam was so under the influence of avarice and ambition that he acted like a madman. For the sake of gain, he went against his own conviction, and against what he knew to be the will of God. Greed controlled him, NOT the will of God. That happens today too!

Balaam is called a prophet here . . . either: #1. Because he pretended to be so: thus the false prophets are sometimes called "prophets" (Jer. 6:13; 26:7-8, 11). Or: #2. Because he really was a prophet, though a wicked and covetous one; because he did inquire of God, and had answers from Him, as did Moses (Num. 6:22; 8:9-10, 18-19); and Moses said that the Lord put a word in Balaam's mouth (Num. 23:5, 16); and that prophecy concerning the Messiah (Num. 24:17), had to be from God. Balaam, out of covetousness, did sometimes use divination (Num. 24:1), which is witchcraft (Deut.18:10; Jer.14:14; Eze.12:24; 13:6).

2 Peter 2:17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. (KJV)

These are wells without water . . . Peter compares seducers (false teachers) to wells without water; because just as a well invites a traveler to it in hope of quenching his thirst, but if the well is dry, what good is it? So too, false teachers, make a big show of true wisdom and saving knowledge, and draw men to them, but being destitute of the Truth, delude and deceive them. Wells without water (Jude 1:12-13) gives several other labels to describe the same class of persons. The language used by both Peter and Jude is straight to the point! False teachers are BAD news!

Clouds that are carried with a tempest . . . this is Peter's second description of false teachers. They are as clouds "carried with a tempest" . . . of their own lusts and passions, by which they are governed and led, and carried away with the force of them. They have no power to resist them, being under the dominion of them, and captives of Satan's temptations and being taken in his snare, are led captive by him at his will. "Carried about of winds" (Jude 1:12), and with every wind of false doctrine, always unsteady and unsettled, and ready to embrace every new notion.
2 Thes.2:9-10 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (KJV)

The mist of darkness . . . the darkest darkness, called outer darkness (Mat. 8:12; 22:13; 25:30); by which the torments of Hell are set forth, as well as fire.

The mist of darkness which Jude 13 calls blackness of darkness, a most forlorn and uncomfortable condition, and a righteous judgment, and just retaliation upon them who go against God.

Just as God has His treasures, stores of grace and mercy and glory, for His people; so too, He has His wrath and vengeance reserved, laid up in store with Him, which He will surely bring forth in His own time . . . and the duration of this punishment is "for ever" . . . it is a worm that never dies, a fire that is never quenched (Isa.66:24; Mark 9:44), it is everlasting fire and burnings (Isa.33:14), the smoke of which ascends for ever and ever (Rev.14:11).

See articles on Hell: . . . http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_hell.1.htm

Peter used picturesque language to describe the false teachers. People go to a well to get water. The water keeps them alive. But, some wells have no water. The false teachers did not give anything valuable to Christians. But with Jesus, it is different; He promised that He would make people alive for ever. Jesus also described how the Holy Spirit would live inside people. The Holy Spirit would be like the water that always flows (John 4:13-14; 7:37-38).

A mist is not wet enough to make the land wet. And a strong wind can quickly blow the mist away. This is picture language. It shows that the false teachers are NOT useful. They have NO power to help other people. The place of ‘black darkness’ probably refers to the darkest place in Hell. The false teachers will have the same punishment as the wicked angels (verse 4).

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. (KJV)

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity . . . big words, nice, smooth sounding words, but totally void of the Truth that can give eternal life! (John 3:15-18,36; 5:24; 8:24; 14:6; 1 John 5:10-12).

They pretend to have wisdom and learning, and the sad thing is, many in today's world do have learning, but that learning came from seminaries that teach false doctrines! And they certainly have no TRUE wisdom, because that comes only from God (Ps.110:10; Pro.1:5,7; Mat.7:24; Jam.3:13).

False teachers try to attach great importance to what they say, and urge it in a positive manner. The Truth of God is simple, and it delights in simple statements. Error and falsehoods are noisy and theatrical, with hopes to succeed by substituting sound for sense, striving to seduce people into believing that what they say is true, when it is absolutely false.

They allure through the lusts of the flesh . . . they use various baits in hopes of suckering someone to grab hold; like they are going fishing (Jam.1:14).

Through much wantonness . . . this explains different lusts with which they try to indulge men in, immorality, wantonness and uncleanness (2 Tim.3:6).

Those that were clean escaped from them who live in error . . . it seems these apostates lured back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception and disobedience. Peter may mean the error of Judaism, or heathenism, wherein they had been formerly involved, and others still were, in foul ways of sin and error in which they had walked and yet might afterward return to the same, as bad or worse that before they started (Mat.12:43; 13:21). Peter does not want those who had been exposed to the Truth to wander away from it.

Just because people hear the Truth, does NOT mean that they are saved (Mat.13:18-22). After they hear the Truth, the Gospel, some forsake the Truth for one reason or another. But, those who are truly saved, are saved for ever! . . . Once Saved, always Saved! Believe it! . . .  http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Basics/if_saved_always_saved.htm  www.jesus-is-savior.com/Believer%27s%20Corner/eternal_security.htm

2 Peter 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. (KJV)

While they promise them liberty . . . false teachers promise liberty for their lusts, which totally opposes the Bible. So they are promising liberty from the yoke of the Divine law . . . my friend. . . they CANNOT keep that promise! NO way! They abuse the name of Christian liberty, and extended it to immoral licentiousness. BEWARE! John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (KJV) . . . Only JESUS can give you TRUE liberty!

They themselves are the servants of corruption . . . false teachers are under the power and dominion of sin and Satan! They are the slaves of their gross and corrupt passions, they are utter strangers to TRUE freedom, for they are bound in the chains of serving the devil (John 8:44; 2 Cor.11:13-15). Their immoral passions, appetites and outright lusts have obtained total mastery over them, and made them slaves of Satan. 2 Cor.3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (KJV)

For of whom a man is overcome . . . the same is he brought in bondage. These false teachers spoke so much of Christian liberty, yet were overcome by their own lusts, and kept under by them, and were the worst of slaves. Rom.6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (KJV)

BEWARE! False teachers today preach this same FALSE liberty! Some churches have even gone so far as to ordain homosexual preachers. BEWARE!!! That is SIN, and God shall punish it!

A person is a slave to whatever it is that controls him or her. TRUE freedom does NOT mean doing anything you want to do. NO one is ever completely free in that sense. But if and when you refuse to follow and obey God, you will follow your own sinful desires and you will be a slave to what your body wants. If you submit your life to Christ, He will free you from slavery to sin. Christ frees us to serve Him, and that freedom results in only the best! That freedom is for our ultimate good (1 Pet.1:4-5). Again: John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (KJV) . . . Only JESUS can give you TRUE liberty!

2 Peter 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. (KJV)

This is a difficult Passage and not understood by many. My comment follows.

For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world . . . this does NOT mean that they had been TRUE Christians, and had fallen from grace. I am a firm believer that once a person is truly saved and has been endowed with the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17; Rom.8:9), they are God's child, a Christian, for ever! ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED!

Many people reform outwardly, and escape from the open corruptions which prevail around them, some of which they had themselves practiced, but they still have NO true love for God at heart and NO desire to serve and obey Him, and will eventually return to what they had been doing. They have never really been saved. They may "profess" to be Christians, but they do not "possess" Christ in their heart. They are hypocrites.

The pollutions of the world . . . are the worst kinds of gross wickednesses in which most of the world still lieth (1 John 5:19).

Through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ . . . I think that Peter means the knowledge of Christ that brings with it an outward reformation of life, but does not purify the heart. Many are pricked in the heart of their sin, but it is not a permanent reformation.

The apostle is NOT speaking here of those that were rooted in Christ by a saving and heart purifying faith (1 Pet.1:18-19; 1 John 5:10-12; John 5:24). Peter is speaking of unstable souls here (2 Pet. 2:14), still exercising covetous practices.

Peter does not imply that they were TRUE Christians, or that they had ever had any saving knowledge of the Redeemer. People can know OF Jesus and OF the doctrines and duties of religion, which sometimes may lead sinners to abandon their outward sins . . . BUT, that knowledge has NO connection with grace that saves (Eph.2:8-9). Many may profess to be a Christian, and may know enough of Christianity to understand that it requires them to abandon their immoral habits, but they still are not TRUE Christians.

They are again entangled therein, and overcome . . . meaning they return to their old sins, yield to them, and continue in them (1 John 3:8). Entangled is from which is derived our word implicate, means to braid in, to interweave; to involve in, to entangle. Here I think Peter means that these false teachers become involved in those sins, like an animal that is entangled in a net.

The latter end is worse with them than the beginning . . . this is usually the case. Apostates become worse than they were before their professed Christianity. That is how it is with those who have been addicted to any habits of sin . . . who profess to become religious, and then fall away. "Again entangled" (Luke 11:26; Heb.6:4, 10:26).

This is a very difficult Passage. Some commentators omit it or try to slide by it.
Maybe the following article will help a little: . . . http://www.hisservants.org/hard_heb.6.4-9_h_s.htm

2 Peter 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. (KJV)

For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness . . . not that ignorance is good, or is it to be excused; but it is a lesser evil. Peter says that their sin would have been less if they had NOT known the Truth . . . but now, he says, they sin against knowledge, so their apostasy is much worse than their ignorance would have been (Mat.11:23-24; Luke 12:47-48). John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (KJV)

The way of righteousness . . . means obtaining righteousness by Christ (1 Cor.1:30; Col.2:3; Isa. 45:24; Jer 23:5-6; Rom. 4:25; 2 Cor. 5:21), and of living godly in Christ (2 Tim. 3:12), prescribed in the Gospel; the same which is called the right way (2 Pet. 2:15) and the way of truth (2 Pet. 2:2). Only by Jesus' righteousness do we become "wise unto salvation," whereas once we were "fools." Proverbs 12:28 In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death. (KJV)

To turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them . . . it is called holy, not just because it proceeds from God, who is holy, but because it is the way God uses to make people holy, and as it is totally opposite to the pollutions of the world.

2 Peter 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. (KJV)

But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb . . . Pro. 26:11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. (KJV) . . . This is true! A dog will return to its own vomit. Any one who has a dog knows this as fact.

They are again entangled and overcome by their former immoral pollutions, for there never was a thorough change brought about in their hearts. Only the Holy Spirit can change the heart! Man cannot do it no matter how hard he tries. Regeneration (Jer.32:39; Eze.11:19; 36:26; John 1:12-13; 3:3-8; 1 Cor.4:15; 6:11; 2 Cor.3:3; 5:17; Gal.4:29; 6:15; Eph. 2:10; Tit. 3:5; Jam.1:18; 1 Pet.1:3,23; 2 Pet.1:4; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1,18). .

Dogs and swine were both considered unclean by Jewish law. Peter is trying to show that the false teachers and will return to their true, natural, unchanged condition. The dog was thought to be among the most vile and disgusting of all animals (Deut.23:18; 1 Sam.17:43; 2 Sam.3:8; 9:8; 16:9; Mat.7:6; Phil.3:2).

And the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire . . . I don't care how clean you wash a pig, when you turn it loose, it will head straight for its mud hole! No external reformation will prevent his returning to his former habits; and when he does return, we can only say that he is acting according to his real nature . . . a nature which has never been changed, any more than the nature of the dog or the swine. Peter is talking about the characteristics of the persons referred to in this chapter, (2 Peter 2:9-19).

But, consider the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). IF a person is a TRUE child of God (a son) and NOT a pig, they will NOT stay in the pig pen! The TRUE son will NOT stay in the pig pen! He may backslide something fierce at times, BUT that pig pen is NOT his home! The prodigal son found this out! Luke 15:17-19 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. (KJV) . . . The "son" was sick of that pig pen.

This Passage, 2 Pet.2:22, is often quoted to prove "the possibility of falling from grace, and from a very high degree of it too." I disagree! The true point of this Passage is to show that the persons referred to NEVER were changed. Their heart remained the same, even if they seemed to change on the outside, just like millions today!

Whatever external reformation MIGHT have occurred, their nature stayed the same, just like the dog and sow! And that when they strayed from their OUTWARD profession, they simply were acting according to their nature, and proved that there had been NO real change.

This passage will NEVER prove that a TRUE Christian will fall away and perish. It will also prove that we should NOT rely on mere external reformation, or outward cleansing, as proof of godliness. Thousands who have been externally reformed have clearly shown that they had NO true godliness, and there is nothing in outward reformation that can fit us for Heaven. God looks upon the heart; and TRUE Christianity has its seat there, and only Christ can secure eternal life for us. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)

Peter described the false teachers in two sickening ways. The statement about the dog comes from Proverbs 26:11. The statement about the pig does not come from the Bible, but it must have been a familiar phrase at that time. Peter had already described the false teachers as dangerous and vicious ‘animals’ (2 Pet.2:12). Now he shows that they were like dirty dogs and pigs. These two animals may look clean on the outside but their desires are not good. They return to what is dirty. In a similar way, the false teachers had not really changed. They SAID that they were Christians. But they returned to their own desires and 'dirty' immoral ways. They did not believe that God would judge them, but He most certainly shall!
