Theme: Persecution of believers now and judgment of unbelievers hereafter (at Christ's coming)
Introduction (2 Thes.1:1-2)
2 Thes.1:1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV)
Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ . . . Paul's greeting is his usual friendly greeting to a church which is scripturally and spiritually sound. Paul includes the greetings of Silas (Silvanus) and Timothy. These three men had endured much for the sake of the Gospel. Paul and Silas were in the prison at Philippi. Paul, Silas and Timothy had gone to Thessalonica together, and later Paul had to leave them. He waited for them in Athens and, when they did not come, he went on to Corinth where they finally joined him. It seems that it was about this time Paul that wrote his first Letter to the Thessalonians to answer some of the questions that had come up since he had been there.
When Paul writes his second Letter, he identifies his two co-workers who are brethren with him. He would identify himself with men who, for us today, would be totally unknown had not Paul included them in these Letters. This reveals something of the character of Paul. A man who had been a young, proud and arrogant Pharisee has become a humble follower of the Lord Jesus and a servant of His and an apostle of His (Acts 9).
2 Thes.1:2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)
Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ . . . Grace and peace are two VERY important words in the Gospel. Grace always comes first. If you have experienced the grace of God, then you are saved. Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)
When you come to God as a lost sinner, bringing nothing, and receiving SO much from Him, then you have experienced the grace of God. He offers you salvation. Salvation is a FREE GIFT! (verse 8, above) and (Rom.6:23). The gift of God is eternal life. You CANNOT work for a gift, for if you do, it ceases to be a gift and it becomes something you have earned. You CANNOT buy a gift, or it is not a gift! Salvation is God offering you, a lost, hell-bound sinner, eternal life if you trust Christ. That is grace.
Peace . . . if you have experienced God's grace, then you know something about His peace. Peace is something that you can FEEL! Peace comes when you know that your sins are forgiven. Peace does NOT come from the counsel of some shrink. It comes from a supernatural source . . . from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! Peace is something the wicked world will never know! Peace is supernatural blessing from God, ONLY through Christ! IF you don't have it, you can get it, because it is the gift of God which is given to sinners who turn to Christ.
Persecution of Believers and Fruits of It (2 Thes.1:3-7)
2 Thes.1:3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; (KJV)
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet . . . the word meet means proper. Paul says that it is right and fitting for them to thank God for the Thessalonians.
Because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth . . . you cannot grow inwardly toward God without growing outward toward your brother. When you grow toward God in grace, knowledge and faith, you also grow toward your brother in love. The word charity in this verse is love, just like in 1 Cor.13.
Always remember that God will send His TRUE children a little trouble now and then, because that discipline produces patience in our lives. It enables us to look way out into the future with hope. God does chastise His children! Hebrews 12:6-8 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. (KJV) . . . God does NOT chastise the devil’s children (1 Jn.3:10).
2 Thes.1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: (KJV)
So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure . . . tribulations are afflictions, troubles. I am a firm believer that the church will NOT go through the Great Tribulation, but we will go through some tribulation (little tribulation)in our lives on Earth. We all will have trouble down here. Patience is an interesting word, meaning to be placed under. The person who is patient is able to stand up under what comes his way. 1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV) . . . TRUST Him! God will NEVER give you more than you can tolerate! There have been times when I think that maybe God thinks I am a lot stronger than I really am. But, in the end, He was right, and I made it through.
The patience and faith of these Christians were unshaken as they endured a much trouble, persecutions and afflictions. 1 Peter 4:12-16 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. (KJV)
There is a BIG difference between being disciplined to learn patience, and the punishment of the wicked. God disciplines His children to help them grow, that they might have patience and a hope for the future.
2 Thes.1:5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: (KJV)
Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God . . . Paul tells them that the persecutions and tribulations which they endure, are a clear proof that God has judged rightly in calling Gentiles into His Church; and these sufferings are also a proof that they are called, for those who enter into the Kingdom of God go through many troubles; and their going through those troubles was a proof that they are entering in, and God sees it right and just that they should be permitted to suffer before they enjoy that endless and blessed peace of Heaven. The sufferings of the just, and the triumphs of the wicked in this life, are a sure proof that there will be a future judgment, in which the wicked shall be punished and the righteous rewarded. This saying is not only true in itself, but it is most likely that this is the apostle's meaning.
That ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer . . . our suffering has nothing to do with salvation, but it does prepare us for our eternal state. One day, when you and I look back to this life on Earth, maybe we will wish that we had had a more discipline than we got. While the judgment of the wicked begins with in verse 8, this sure is the introduction to it.
2 Thes.1:6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; (KJV)
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you . . . although God neither rewards nor punishes in this life in an over-all way, yet He often reveals His displeasure, especially against those who persecute His followers. We must remember that they who have given us tribulation, shall have tribulation as their payment, from God! When God judges, He is always righteous in it. Is there unrighteousness with God? . . . the answer is NO! God forbid (Rom. 9:14). Anything God does is absolutely right. He can do NO wrong. Sometimes we complain about the things that happen to us because we do not understand God's ways. But my friend, God has a very definite purpose for EVERYTHING that He does. God is completely righteous in sending the Great Tribulation, for it is a judgment of sinners. The next time troubles come your way, and you are tempted to ask: “Why me, Lord?” I say to you, ask yourself: “Why not me?” Because in the end, you will benefit from the chastisement of God.
2 Thes.1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, (KJV)
And to you who are troubled rest with us . . . while the ones left behind at the Rapture, the unbelievers, shall enter the Tribulation . . . TRUE believers shall have that eternal rest which remains for the people of God, and they shall be removed from the Earth BEFORE the Tribulation! They shall NOT see God’s wrath in that horrendous time.
When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven . . . this shall not take place till the Lord Jesus come to judge the world.
With his mighty angels . . . the Coming of God to judge the world is scarcely ever spoken of in the Scriptures without mentioning the holy angels, who shall accompany Him (Deut.33:2; Mat.25 ;31; 16:27; 26:64; Mk.8:38). The Lord Jesus IS coming in judgment.

2 Thes.1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV)
In flaming fire taking vengeance . . . to start, fire is a symbol of God’s wrath and judgment (Num.11:1; 16:35; Deut.4:24; 5:25; 9:3; 32:22; 2 Ki.1:12; Ps.78:63; Eze.22:31; Heb.12:29).
This Passage may refer to Christ, who will be revealed from Heaven in such a way; and whose Coming will be as the lightning, not only sudden, but glorious and visible (Rev.19:11-21; Zec.14:1-5). He will be seen and easily discerned; there may be such a light and flaming fire around Him, which will serve to make Him visible, and will greatly add to the majesty of His appearance, and strike terror to His enemies (Dan.7:9-10; Ps.97:3-4).
Christ, appearance as of lightning: (Ex.19:16; 20:18; Ps.97:4; Dan.10:5-6; Mat.17:4; 24:27; 28:3; Lk.17:24; Rev.4:5; 8:5; 11:19; 16:18; 20:11)
Or this may refer to the angels, who appear with Christ Jesus when He comes (Mat.25:31; Mk.8:38), who shall descend in fiery forms, which is agreeable to their nature (Ps.104:4), for they appeared in the forms of horses of fire, and chariots of fire, when Elijah was carried up to heaven (2 Ki.2:11), and also after Elisha’s prayer to God (2 Ki.6:17).
The persons who will then be punished, and on whom vengeance will be taken, are described as follows,
On them that know not God . . . this is a common character of the Gentiles (1 Thes.4:5), who do NOT know the one, true and living God . . . or they refuse to glorify Him as God, and be thankful to Him for the mercies they receive from Him, and worse yet, do not know Him as Christ Jesus. This ignorance of theirs is NOT without sin (Rom.1:20-23), nor will it excuse them from punishment. I truly believe that God gives each soul enough light that they COULD believe IF they wanted to. http://www.hisservants.org/is_jesus_god_h_s.htm
And that obey not the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ . . . the Author of the Gospel is Christ Jesus! He is the Author, was the Preacher, and is the Sum and Substance of it; which is good news and glad tidings of the grace of God, of peace, pardon, righteousness, life and salvation by Christ.
The Gospel is said to be obeyed when it is received and embraced by faith with a sincere heart, and confession is made of it with the mouth (Rom.10:9-10).
2 Thes.1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; (KJV)
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction . . . this means destruction of BOTH soul and body. This does NOT mean the annihilation (eradication, extermination, extinction, total wiping out), of either soul or body! Their gnawing worm of conscience will NEVER die, and the fire of divine wrath will NEVER be quenched; the smoke of their torment will ascend FOR EVER (Mk.9:44,46;48). When God repeats something in the Scriptures, you can rest assured it is VERY important! Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Any sin committed against an infinite and eternal Being, will be infinite in its duration. These sinners, these enemies of God (Gen.11:1-9; Ps.14:1; 2 Thes.2:3-4), will be removed . . .
From the presence of the Lord . . . to me, this would be the worst part of Hell! All the wicked will be placed where they will NEVER, ever be in the Presence of the Lord. For ever removed from the goodness of God, in which the happiness of the glorified saints lies. Judgment Day for the wicked will be horrendous, and their verdict will be WORSE! Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV) Jesus will say:
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (KJV)
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV) . . . The lake of fire, everlasting fire, everlasting punishment . . . you do NOT want to go there! God’s Presence is NOT in Hell! God’s Presence is in Heaven!
As soon as the Lord appears, the wicked will perish at His Presence . . . like wax before the fire. So awful will be His appearance to them, that they will TRY to flee from it with the extreme terror (Rev.20:11). They will try to call to the rocks and mountains to fall on them (Lk.23:30; Rev.6:16). They want NO part of the Lord’s wrath, but they CANNOT hide from His wrath!
And from the glory of his power . . . the awesome and glorious power, in which Jesus shall come, and which will be exerted, and shown in raising the dead, and gathering all nations before Him (Mat.25:31-33), in passing sentence on them, and in executing that verdict. My friend, Jesus has power to save all those who believe God (Jn.6:28-29; 1 Jn.5:10-13). AND Jesus also has power to destroy. His awesome power can glorify the bodies and souls of His saints . . . AND His power can destroy the wicked, both body and soul, in Hell for all eternity.
The Word of God really tell us much about Heaven. I think one reason is that it is so wonderful we could not comprehend it. BUT . . . it does say MUCH more about Hell. WHY???
Because God does NOT want anyone to go there! 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV) . . . Also see: (Jn.3:15-16; 10:28; 11:50).
God warns people over and over again that they shall indeed “perish in Hell” if they do not obey the Gospel. Wicked shall perish in Hell: (Num.16:33; 24:20; 24:24; Deut.4:26; 28:20; 30:18; Josh.22:20; 23:13,16; 2 Ki.9:8; Job 36:12; Ps.1:6; 2:12; 9:3; 10:16; 37:20; 68:2; 73:27; Isa.41:11; 60:12; Jer.10:15; Lk.13:3,5; 1 Cor.1:18; 2 Thes.2:10; 2 Pet.2:12; 3:6; Jude 1:11)
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power . . . this is an extremely sobering Passage! It should make people sit up and take notice of WHAT God is saying! But it is missed or rejected by most.
Hell is so often ridiculed today . . . BUT . . . that does NOT mean it is not there! My friend HELL is REAL! Just because you believe it does not exist, does not make it so! Your belief about this, is just wishful thinking. It was the common idea that Hitler would not plunge Europe into a war and turn Europe into a holocaust (a great or complete devastation or destruction), but he did. It was a genocide of European Jews! Also, many people thought that Japan would never attack America. Whether they believed it or not, there was a vicious attack at Pearl Harbor. I wish there were some way that I could convince these “no Hell” people that they are WRONG!
My dear friend, the Bible is TRUE! Every bit of it! God does NOT lie. God CANNOT lie (Tit.1:2). You had better face the FACT that there is indeed a HELL!
Christ shall return to this Earth one day. First, He shall come “in the clouds” at the Rapture (1 Thes,4:13-18), to remove His own from the Earth, and then about 7 years later, AFTER the Great Tribulation, He shall descend to the Earth (Rev.19:11-21; Zec.14:1-5). That will be a terror to the wicked; it will be a judgment upon those who "know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" (verse 8).
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (KJV) . . . There are many who think that they must do something, work for their salvation. The Bible gives the answer to this!
John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV) . . . That is what the Word of God teaches. The only WORK you must do is BELIEVE! Believe on Him (Jesus, God’s only begotten Son Jn.3:16), whom he (God the Father) hath sent, to pay our sin debt. Jesus paid it all on the cross, for us! He paid a debt He did not owe, because we had a debt we could not pay! Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV) . . . Salvation is FREE! Salvation is a GIFT (Rom.6:23). All you need to do is BELIEVE God (1 Jn.5:10-13), BELIEVE the Word of God!
To speak about Hell, God’s wrath and judgment is NOT popular, to say the least! People just do NOT want to hear it. So, why do I keep bringing it up in everything that I write? Because I know it is all TRUE! When you are born again into God’s family, you are instilled with Godly wisdom (Mat.7:24; 1 Cor.2:13; Jam.3:13,17; 1 Jn.2:20).
Far too many pastors today refuse to confront people with the fact that they are lost. And sad to say, far too many pastors today are going along with the crowd, as they compromise with the immorality that is rampant all over the world, or worse, they accept it (Gen.6:5; 13:13; 18:20-21). False shepherds were rampant in Israel (Eze.34), and they are in today’s world!
Gen. 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (KJV) . . . Evil imagination, all evil purposes and desires continually. (Job 15:16; Pro.6:18; Ecc;7:29; 9:3; Jer.4:14; 17:9; Eze.8:9,12; Mat.15:19; Mk.7:21-23; Eph.2:1-3; Tit.3:3). BEWARE!!!
The way that I look at this, IF you were asleep in a burning building, wouldn’t you want someone to rescue you? THAT, as I see it, is what God does for us! He sent His only begotten Son, (Jn.3:15-16) to save us from the burning fires of Hell. When a person refuses to accept God’s Way, out of that flaming fire, He considers them lost!
John 3:17-19 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (KJV)
Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; (KJV)
1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (KJV)
The judgment of the lost is coming (Rev.20:11-15). IF you are determined to stay in that class, the lost (wicked in God’s eyes) you shall be judged. This is a FACT, and I am warning you right now.
Again, I tell you who the lost are! Those who: #1. "know not God" and who #2. "obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ." Verse 9 needs to be repeated: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.
2 Thes.1:10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. (KJV)
When he shall come to be glorified in his saints . . . the saints are those who are sanctified (set apart) for holiness and happiness by God the Father, because their sins are atoned by the Blood and Sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. When Jesus comes a Second time, and He shall, He will be glorified in the saints, and He will appear glorious to them! He will come in His own glory both as God and Man; and in His Father's glory, authority and majesty, conferred on Him as the Judge of the whole Earth (Mat.25:31-46), and with the glory of His angels, who will accompany Him. The Lord will bestow a glory on the saints, their souls will be endowed with perfect knowledge and holiness; and their bodies will be made like unto His glorious body (Phil.3:21), and they will shine as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father (Mat.13:43). This glory on the members of Christ will overflow to the glory of Him, their Head. The saints will ascribe honor, praise and glory to Him, and give Him the honor and glory of their salvation for all eternity.
And to be admired in all them that believe . . . them that believe mean the saints. These terms mean the same thing, for NO one can be a saint, unless he is a believer in Christ! All those that are sanctified by faith in Him (Acts 26:18), will He admire (approve and respect) when Jesus comes a Second time. He is admired by them now; for He is to them, the chiefest among ten thousand (Song 5:10), and altogether lovely (Song 5:16). The saints wonder at the glory and beauty of Him, and the fulness of his grace (Jn.1:16).
(Because our testimony among you was believed) in that day . . . in that day belongs to all that goes before, that Christ shall take vengeance on wicked men, and they shall be punished by Him, and that He shall be glorified and admired in and by His people in that day when He shall be revealed from Heaven, and comes to judge both quick and dead. The Coming of Christ to the Earth in judgment will defend and uphold the believers who have put their trust in Him, and it will glorify the Saviour.
2 Thes.1:11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power: (KJV)
Wherefore also we pray always for you . . . not only understand the above things to comfort them, and to support them under sufferings, but Paul adds prayers, and not only then, but always, that they may be among the saints in whom Christ will be honored, glorified and admired.
That our God would count you worthy of this calling . . . your calling (1 Cor.1:26-31). This calling is without a doubt of God, and NOT of man. And it is NOT because of any previous worthiness in man, but is a blessing of grace. Their calling was of His own good will and pleasure.
And fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness . . . their calling was a special goodness. It was NOT the good pleasure of His strict justice in condemning the wicked, denying His grace to them, and hiding the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven from them . . . which IS also a part of His good pleasure.
The saints calling is of the good pleasure of his righteousness, the good pleasure of his grace and kindness in Christ Jesus, and intends the whole of His gracious plans towards His people. The good pleasure of his goodness is His desire that all of might be fulfilled; which consists of many things, some of which were fulfilled, and others remained to be fulfilled. The good pleasure of his goodness consists of the choosing of persons in Christ (Eph.1:4), and the predestination of them to the adoption of children (Rom.8:28-30), the redemption of them by the Blood of Christ (1 Pet.1:18-19), in which are displayed the exceeding riches of his grace (Eph.2:7), the free justification of them by the righteousness of Christ (Rom.5:1), the full pardon of all their sins (Heb.8:12; 10:17) and their adoption into the household of God (Eph.2:19), their regeneration (Tit.3:5), and of rich grace, and abundant mercy (1 Pet.1:3). ALL these instances of the good pleasure of His goodness were fulfilled in these people. What remained was the carrying on and finishing the work of grace upon their souls, and their eternal enjoyment in the heavenly realm.
And the work of faith with power . . . faith is not only a working grace (1 Thes.1:3), and is accompanied with good works; but it is a work itself, not of man, for he CANNOT produce faith in himself, nor apply it of himself. Faith is the work of God (Gal.5:22-23), which He works in His people. It not only has God for its Object, but has God for its Author. No one can go out and surrender his own righteousness, and trust himself to the righteousness of Christ for his justification before God. No one can gain acceptance with Him on their own. Faith is owed to the exceeding greatness of God's power to them that believe; and that same power is seen in enabling faith to do the things it does (Heb.11:1). Faith is a blessing from God when we believe! Faith encourages, supports and maintains us under the most difficult circumstances, as in the case of Abraham (Gal.3:6; Jam.2:23). Faith can stand fast under the most severe persecutions, and at the hour of our physical death.
2 Thes.1:12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)
That the name of the Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you . . . this is the end of Paul’s prayer, which is answered by the fulfilment of the things prayed for. The Name of Christ and His Gospel must NOT be dishonored by unbelief, cowardice and the unworthy walk of those who profess Christ (say they are Christians), while their works and words prove otherwise!
The Lord Jesus should be honored and glorified in and by the saints, by their faith, their patience and their good works in this world. They not only should adorn and enhance the doctrine of God our Saviour, but should cause others to glorify Him as well. Only IF Christ is glorified in this life on Earth, will they be glorified in Him hereafter!
And ye in him . . . meaning that the saints are now glorified in Him as their Head and shall be raised together and made to sit together in heavenly places in Him. When the work of grace is finished upon their eternal souls, they will be glorified together with Him and by Him. In the resurrection morn, they shall appear in glory with Him both in soul and body, and shall be made like Him (Phil.3:21), and they shall forever more enjoy Him and see Him as He is (1 Jn.3:2).
According to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ . . . according to the grace and free favor of God in election, and of Jesus Christ in redemption, and of the blessed Spirit in sanctification. Election, redemption, calling, justification, pardon, adoption and the entirety of salvation . . . from first to last, are of grace and NOT of works.

Comment on 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; (KJV)
This is one of the clearest Scriptures in the Word of God revealing that the unsaved (unbelievers, the lost, the wicked, enemies of God) will burn in Hell forever. Many people today stupidly deny the existence of Hell. Rev. 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (KJV) . . . My friend, this Passage condemns these people to Hell.
The word vengeance in 2 Thes.1:8 means a revenging punishment. In spite of today’s modern, damnable heresy (2 Pet.2:1), that a loving God would never allow anyone to suffer in the flames of Hell for eternity, 2 Thes.1:8 CLEARLY states they are wrong! The Bible, in no uncertain terms, tells us that ALL those who fail to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ shall suffer the flames of Hell, the wrath of God's vengeance, forever. See our booklet: http://www.godcannotlie.org/booklet_a_loving_god_wouldn't_send_me_to_hell.htm
Few people today really want to hear the Truth. I used to think that IF people could only hear (or read) the Truth of God's Word they would repent. I was wrong, according to the signs of the times all over the world. Sin today compares to the world before the Flood and destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen.6:5; 13:13; 18:20-21). The Bible tells us what happened in both those cases! This is why I think the Rapture is very near. The end of this world as we know it, gets closer each day. http://www.hisservants.org/rapture,_second_coming_h_s.htm
Most people do NOT want the Truth, because their hearts are wicked (Jer.17:9). Jesus stated: Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. (KJV) . . . Most religious people are ‘churchy’ but they are not TRUE Christians. They intentionally reject the Truth of God's Word, and follow man’s traditions instead (Mat.15:8-9).
Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (KJV) . . . Lost sinners have the Truth readily available, but they refuse to obey God's Word.
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (KJV) . . . ALL the things of Creation clearly show that there IS a God, a triune God! SO . . . they are without excuse. They will have NO excuses on Judgment Day!
The Law of God condemns mankind (Rom.3:10,19,23). We ALL are guilty sinners, and we deserve eternal punishment (Rom.6:23; Rev.20:11-15). Many people have a hard time understanding this because instead of comparing themselves to a Holy God, they compare themselves with other sinners, and there is always someone who is a worse sinner that they are. BUT . . . IF we compare our self with God's Law, we then see that we are completely guilty. IF a man rejects the Gospel, which is the good news of Christ Jesus and His work on the cross, then he is burdened with his own sins, because they reject the atonement and redemption which Jesus made possible for anyone who was interested. Jesus died for the sins of the world (Jn.1:29; 1 Jn.2:2), and that means YOU! Why not accept salvation? It is a GIFT! It is FREE! (Eph.2:8; Rom.6:23)
If an unbeliever willingly rejects the Gospel, and dies in the midst of all those unforgiven sins, God shall take vengeance upon that person with flaming fire because of their rebellion and sinful pride. That person shall be punished in Hell for each and every sin ever committed in their lifetime, even though they were a good, moral person. I firmly believe there are different judgments in Hell, just as there are different rewards in Heaven (Lk.12:47). No two people will receive the exact same punishment in Hell, and no two people will get the exact same rewards in Heaven (or lack of rewards 1 Cor.3:13-15). It is all based on what we do in this life.
According to works: (Ps.62:12; Pro.24:12,29; Isa.59:18; Jer.21:14; 25:14; 32:19; Lam.3:64; Eze.7:8-9; 18:30; Hos.12:2; Zec.1:6; Mat.16:27; Rom.2:6; 2 Tim.4:14; Rev.2:23; 18:6; 20:12-13; 22:12).
The average person today is so hardhearted about sin that they do not see anything wrong with abortion, blasphemy, drunkenness, witchcraft, psychics, pornography, strip joints, false religion, gambling, nudity, homosexuality, fornication, etc., etc. SO . . . WHY is God going to punish the wicked with revenge? Because every time we sin, it is a sin against God (Ps.51:4). When we sin, it is always a crime against God.
If a person is not saved, he has never had his sins forgiven in Christ Jesus, and ALL, every one of those sins are piling up on their record. Rev.20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (KJV) . . . The vengeance which God will take in flaming fire upon the wicked in Hell will be punishment for their sins. If God allows suffering in this present world, then WHY would anyone be so foolish to believe that God will not allow torment in eternity?
Some people will argue over the meaning of the word “Hell” in the Scriptures; but there is no way around the plain teaching of 2 Thes.1:8, which warns of flaming fire and God's vengeful wrath against all Christ-rejecters. Hell is a literal place of flaming fire and torment.
Why is it so hard to understand the reality of a literal Hell? If a God of love will allow horrible suffering in this world, then He certainly will allow suffering in eternity. The Bible is God's Word and God warns us about the judgment to come in Hell for all Christ-rejecters (John 3:36).
The Bible has much more to say about Hell than Heaven. The wicked KNOW in their hearts that they are running from God. And they also KNOW that they are sinners. Many Christ-rejecters are in denial, changing the Truth of God into a lie in their own warped mind (Rom.1:25,28). God has forewarned that He will take out His anger in flaming fire against the wicked, punishing them forever (2 Thes.1:9), seeking vengeance against their wickedness.
EVERY PERSON shall meet their fate the day they die. Will YOU go to Heaven? OR will YOU go to Hell? There are NO other eternal destinations. Purgatory is a fairytale, made up by the Catholics. It is just a deceptive way to get people to spend money, supposedly buying indulgences, pardons . . . and making them think they can pray and pay to have a loved one removed from purgatory. RIDICULOUS! That is NOT in the Bible! If a loved one dies without having trusted Jesus, the Christ, then they are forever doomed to the Lake of Fire and they have no hope. It is too late once a person dies a physical death. Heb.9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (KJV) . . . THAT is what the Bible states! NOW is the day of salvation! (2 Cor.6:2). Do NOT put it off my friend, because tomorrow may never come for you!
Everyone has one of two options about eternity:
#1. Believe on Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and have your sins forgiven (Acts 10:43)
#2. Pay for one's own sins in Hell forever (Rev.20:15)
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV) . . . God sent His only begotten Son into the world to pay our sin debt.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV) . . . God the Father simply asks that we come to Him through His Son for salvation.
Acts 4:10-12 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV) . . . Anyone who attempts to come to God apart from the Son will go to Hell forever. There is NO other way to be saved.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (KJV)
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (KJV)
Hebrews 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: (KJV) . . . God in His goodness has provided a Way for our redemption, and that Way is made possible only by the precious Blood of His dear Son.
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (KJV) . . . Everyone who goes to Hell CHOOSES to go there! God remains faithful in His offer to forgive. God will forgive even the vilest sinner who comes to Him by way of His dear Son, Jesus Christ.
The choice is ours, ours alone to make. Every single person must decide for themselves. What have YOU done with Jesus?
