Jeremiah, Chapter 33
Jeremiah 33 is a chapter of Promises, referring first, to the people and Kingdom in general (Jer.33:4-13), and then to the royal and priestly offices in particular (Jer.33:14-26). The first part gives more details to the Passages in the preceding prophecy, to which this chapter is joined by the opening verse. The remaining part is less closely connected; it is full of Promises of the perpetual duration of the house of David and of the Levites.
The date of this prophecy which God entrusted Jeremiah with, is not exact in the time, only that it was after that in the Chapter 32, when things were still growing worse and worse. God spoke twice, for the encouragement of His people. Mankind are not only so disobedient that we have need of Law upon Law to bring us to our duty, but we cannot be trusted, that we must have Promise upon Promise to give us comfort. The words here, as before, came to Jeremiah when he was in prison. Dear one, no confinement can deprive God's people of His Presence; no locks nor bars can shut out His gracious visits; and many times as their afflictions abound, their consolations abound much more, and they have the most stimulating communications of His favor. The Apostle Paul's sweetest letters were those that were written in a prison. The prophecy itself, has a tremendous comfort wrapped up in it for the relief of the captives, to keep them from sinking into despair.
Jeremiah Chapter 33 is very similar to that of Chapter 32; which confirms the Promise of the restoration of the Jews, aside from the present desolations of their country and dispersions of their people. This Promise has both style and trend, a reference as far forward as to the Gospel Church. It is here promised, (1). That the city shall be rebuilt and re-established to its former state (vs. 1-6). (2). the captives, having their sins pardoned, shall be restored (vs. 7-8). (3). this shall rebound very much to the glory of God (vs. 9). (4). the country shall have both joy and plenty (vs. 10-14). (5). The way shall be made for the Coming of the Messiah (vs. 15-16). (6). the house of David, the house of Levi, and the house of Israel, shall flourish again, and be established, and all three in the Kingdom of Christ. A Gospel Church shall continue while the world stands (vs. 17-26).
The City Shall Be Rebuilt and Re-Established To Its Former State (Jer. 33:1-6)
Jer. 33:1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying, (KJV)
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time . . . not that this was precisely the second time that the Word of the LORD came to the prophet, for it had come to him many more times than those; but this was the second time on the same occasion and the same subject; for the subject of this chapter is the same as that of Chapter 32, concerning The Messiah, and the happiness of the church in His times.
While he was yet shut up in the court of the prison . . . even though the prophet could not go out of he prison and publish his prophecies, yet the LORD visits him again and again; and the LORD’S Presence made the prison like the free place to him; and although he was bound, the Word of the LORD was not bound! It was on a free course, and ran and was glorified; it found its way into the prison, and also out of it.
Jer. 33:2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name; (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof . . . one version is, that made thee; the prophet. Other versions are, the Maker of the Earth (Jer.32:17), and another one interprets it of Jerusalem; . . . to be understood of the New Jerusalem, or church of God in Gospel times. Some seem to understand it of restoring and rebuilding Jerusalem.
The LORD that formed it, to establish it. . . it was the LORD who drew the pattern and model of this spiritual building, His church, in His eternal mind (John 1:1-3), and determined it to be stable and glorified. He forms it, and everyone in it, for Himself, and for His honor and praise, in order to establish it in the world; as it will be more precisely in the latter day. We often read of the LORD'S establishing His church and people in the world. Ps. 48:8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah. (KJV)
The LORD is his name . . . Almighty God, the self-existing Being, the Being of beings; Who is able to perform whatever He undertakes, and is well able to perform this work of settling and establishing His interest.
Jer. 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. (KJV)
Call unto me, and I will answer thee . . . this is not spoken to Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of it; but to the prophet, encouraging him to seek the LORD by prayer, promising an answer to him. When we pray to the LORD, He will receive and answer our prayer.
And show thee great and mighty things . . . which are like fortified cities, that cannot easily be come into, unless the gates are opened to enter; and the design is difficult to understand, which exceeds human belief, and which man’s reason cannot comprehend . . . such are the great things of the Gospel. Some interpret this of things future, of things reserved in the Heart of God, and which He determines to do.
Which thou knowest not . . . the LORD had revealed those things to Jeremiah, but the unbelief of the people in rejecting the grace of God had caused him to forget God's Promise. He did not know them before God had revealed them, and though God had revealed them, yet by his prayer in the former chapter it appears that he did not fully understand them, or firmly believe them as he should have.
*****Even though the fact that Jeremiah is in prison, he was told by the LORD to buy a piece of real estate. Jeremiah acted by faith and bought the land, but he had many questions in his mind. Why was God permitting Judah to go into captivity? If you are walking with God and are in fellowship with Him, He is so wonderful and He does such wonderful things that there will be times when we do not understand what He is doing. Our question is bound to be, ‘Why are You doing this?’ I have had questions like that. And there are other men in Scripture who also had questions they asked God. In the Book of Habakkuk, we find that Habakkuk had a lot of questions. In fact, his book is just a great big ‘WHY?’ Jonah also had some questions to ask the LORD. My friend, such questions are not a lack of faith, but it is hypocrisy to pretend that we have accepted God's ways and are walking in complete submission to Him when actually we are having questions deep inside. I think that God wants us to be honest with Him about everything. Dear one, His promise to us: Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
God is now going to reaffirm the covenant He made with David in 2 Samuel 7. He made a covenant with David so that there would be One to sit on his throne forever. This covenant became the theme song of every prophet, they all refer back to this covenant and rest upon it.
Jer. 33:4 For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword; (KJV)
For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel . . . the destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, which was now being fulfilled, is here mentioned as proof of the success of spiritual blessings afterwards spoken of; and to assure the prophet, that as he would with his own eyes see the fulfilment of the prophecies he had delivered out in the Name of the LORD concerning that, so that certainly the other would be brought to pass.
Concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah . . . the houses of this city, including those of the kings of Judah,
Which were thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword . . . by the mounts (Jer.32:24), which the Chaldeans raised throughout the city; or by the engines they placed there, by which they cast stones into the city, to demolish the houses in it; not just those in common only, but especially the houses of the king and nobles, which they especially directed their shot at; and by the sword, hammers, axes and mattocks, for which sometimes this word is used, when they entered into the city.
Jer. 33:5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city. (KJV)
They come to fight with the Chaldeans . . . either the Jews out of the country, or their neighbors, to help them to break up the siege; but all to no effect.
But it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men . . . the mounts, made of their houses, or their houses themselves; is only to make them graves, and fill them with these carcasses.
Whom I have slain in mine anger, and in my fury . . . that is, God allowed to be slain, being furious and angry with them for their sins.
And for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from the city . . . God had no pity for it, showed no mercy to it, gave it no help and assistance or protection, having withdrawn His Presence from it. The Targum says: I have caused my Shechinah to depart from this city, because of their wickedness. See Jeremiah Chapter 3, Special Comments for Shekinah.
Jer. 33:6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. (KJV)
Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them . . . meaning the church of God, the members of it, symbolized by Jerusalem; and it is to be understood of the healing of their spiritual disorders, the disease of sin, through the precious Blood of the Messiah, who would arise with healing in His wings (Mal.4:2), with remission of sin, which is often meant by healing in Scripture. Christ Jesus is the Physician; His Blood is the balm in Gilead, (Jer.8:22; 46:11) which being applied to those that are diseased with sin, to sin sick souls, for it makes an effective cure of them; so that they shall not say they are sick, because their iniquities are forgiven them (Ps.103:3).
And will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth . . . the same as grace and truth, which are come by Christ (John 1:17); under the Old Testament, these were figured out by types and shadows; but not revealed clearly, as it is in the New Testament, to which this prophecy belongs. Peace may intend peace made with God by the Blood of Christ (1 Pet.1:18-19); peace of conscience, which He gives, and arises from a sense of pardon and atonement by His Blood, and justification by His righteousness; and all kinds of spiritual welfare, prosperity and happiness; of which there will be an abundance, especially in the latter days of the Messiah (Ps.72:8). Truth may mean the faithfulness of God, in fulfilling all His Promises and prophecies concerning The Messiah, and salvation by Him, and may stand opposed to the types and shadows of the old Law; and include the Gospel, the Word of Truth, and all the doctrines of it; which are clearly and fully revealed by the Spirit of Truth, wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of Christ. This begins the account of the great, mighty and hidden things the LORD promised to show the prophet (vs.3). The Targum on this last clause is, and I will reveal the gate of repentance unto them, and I will show them, how they shall walk in the way of peace and truth, and another version is, I will reveal unto them the paths of peace and faith.
The Captives, Having Their Sins Pardoned, Shall Be Restored (Jer. 33:7-8)
Jer. 33:7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first. (KJV)
And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return . . . mention being made of the return of the captivity of Israel, or the ten tribes, as well as that of Judah, shows that this prophecy does not relate to the return of the Jews from their seventy years' captivity in Babylon; but is to be understood spiritually, of a release of the mystical and spiritual Israel of God from the captivity of sin, Satan, and the law, by The Messiah.
And will build them as at the first . . . in the latter day, as at the beginning or first times of the Gospel; when the Church of the LORD was built by Christ, as the Chief Master Builder, and by His apostles under Him . . . built upon Himself, the Foundation of the apostles and prophets; for He is the Corner Stone of it, whereby it became a habitation for God through the Spirit. Since that time, by means of heretics and false teachers, and especially by the man of sin, the tabernacle of David, or Church of Christ, is greatly fallen into ruin, and needs rebuilding and repairing; and this will be done; and then it will be a beautiful structure, as at the first, as it was in the times of the apostles (Acts 15:16).
Corner Stone: (Job 38:6; Ps.118:22; Isa.28:16; Jer. 51:26; Mat.21:42; Mk.12:10; Lk.20:17; Acts 4:11; Eph.2:20; 1 Pet. 2:6-7).
Jer. 33:8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me. (KJV)
And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me . . . by the precious Blood of Christ (1 Pet.1:18-19), which cleanses from all sin, of the heart, the lips and the life, in reference to the purifications under the law (Eze.36:25; 1 John 1:7).
And I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me . . . for Christ's sake, and through His atoning Sacrifice, and upon the basis of full satisfaction made by Him. Many words are here used, to express the fullness of God’s pardoning grace through the precious Blood of Christ Jesus, which reaches to ALL manner of sin; for this is the great and peculiar blessing of the new covenant (Jer.31:34).
This Shall Rebound Very Much
To the Glory of God (Jer. 33:9)
Jer. 33:9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it. (KJV)
And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise, and an honour . . . meaning the church and people of God, being redeemed and rebuilt by Christ, and being cleansed from their sins in His Blood, and all their iniquities forgiven for His sake, would be a cause of joy to themselves and others, and it brings joy, honor and praise to God: so the church, in the latter day, will be an eternal excellence, a joy of many generations, and a praise in the Earth (Isa.60:15); and here they are said to be so.
Before all the nations, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them . . . in redeeming them by the Messiah; calling them by His Spirit and grace; justifying them by the righteousness of Christ; pardoning their sins through His Blood; making them fit for, and giving them a title to eternal glory and happiness. All which would be made known, as it has been to the Gentiles, through the preaching of the Gospel; and which has brought joy and gladness among them, and praise and thanksgiving to God, and which has rebounded to His honor and glory.
And they shall fear and tremble, for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it . . . they shall fear the LORD, and tremble at His Word; not with a slavish, but loving, devoted fear, which is consistent with joy and gladness; and which fear will be influenced not by the terrors of the Law, but by the goodness of God; being of the same nature as the fear (reverence) of the converted Jews at the latter day, who will fear the LORD, and His goodness (Hos.3:5); so that the Gentiles, seeing and hearing of the goodness of God bestowed upon the believing Jews, will be anxious for the same goodness, and be encouraged to seek it; and finding it, they also shall fear the LORD, and worship Him.
The Country Shall Have
Both Joy and Plenty (Jer. 33:10-14)
Jer. 33:10 Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say
shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast, (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD . . . again there shall be heard in this place . . . this is connected with the beginning of verse 11.
Which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast . . . (Jer.32:43); the destruction of it now is certain and inescapable; and this desolation would be made all through the country, with very few men or cattle left.
Even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate . . . as they were already, the country being in the hands of the enemy, and the city almost deserted by the sword, famine and pestilence, and just about to be delivered up.
Without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast . . . neither man nor beast lived there; which exaggerates the miserable condition of the city and country. It expresses the unbelief and despair of the Jews ever seeing better times.
*****Ye say; those who had no difficulty believing what Jeremiah had prophesied concerning the Chaldeans' taking this city, seeing it has already taken, but have difficulty believing what he tells you about the people's returning, and the rebuilding of it. The LORD spoke the one, just as well as the other; there shall be heard again in it the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness once again. When The Messiah shall appear in Judea (Zec.14:1-5; Rev.19:11-21), and His Gospel is preached there, it would then go into all the world. Although weeping may endure for a time, joy will again return. It was warned (Jer.7:34; 16:9) that the voice of joy and gladness should cease there; but dear one, here it is promised that they shall revive again, that the voice of joy and gladness shall be heard there, because the captivity shall be returned; for then shall they be filled with laughter (Ps.126:1-2; Jer.31:12-13; 33:11; Rev.11:15-17).
Jer. 33:11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD. (KJV)
The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness . . . the voice of the Gospel is indeed the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness to all repentant sinners; whose eyes are opened to see their lost condition, for their ears are opened to hear the joyful sound: their hearts are opened to receive the blessings spoken in it. These repentant ones are humble and ashamed, wounded and broken in spirit, and now have a spiritual understanding of things given them. It is to these that the Gospel preached, is glad tidings of great joy (Lk.8:1; Acts 13:32; Rom.10:15), since it contains the doctrines of peace and pardon through the blood of Christ (1 Pet.1:18-19) of justification through His righteousness (Rom.5:1-2); of peace in Him (John 14:27), and eternal salvation by Him (John 3:15-18). It is a voice of joy and gladness to all who believe God (1 John 5:10), and accept His Son to save them (1 John 5:11-13). They hear of Christ Jesus whom they love; they hear of the love of God in Him, and of the love of Him to them; it is spiritual food to their souls! And when they hear this, it rejoices their hearts.
The voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride . . . this expresses great joy and happiness; whereas the opposite indicates great calamity and distress (Jer.7:34). The bridegroom here, means Christ, who has espoused His people to Himself, and is their Husband, (Mat.25:1, 5-6; 10), and behaves as such towards them, in all tenderness, care, love and affection. His Voice was heard in Judea's land as the bridegroom; John heard it, and rejoiced at it, and so did many others (Mat.9:15, John 3:29; Rev.19:9; 21:2), for the Gospel indeed is no other than Jesus’ Voice; that quickens, comforts, allures and charms the soul! And what a Voice it is! And the bride means the church, who is the bride, the Lamb's wife, being married to Him; whose voice of prayer, praise and glory is to Christ, and of encouragement to repentant sinners, is heard in Zion, and is very desirable (Song 2:14).
The voice of them that shall say, praise the LORD of hosts . . . Christ Jesus the Husband of His church, and Redeemer of His people, and Who is the Sovereign LORD of all . . . the Voice of Him is heard, who stir up others to this work and service, and enforces it because,
For the LORD is good . . . always and in essence in Himself, and the Fountain of goodness to others; the good Head and Husband of His church; the good Samaritan: the good Shepherd of His sheep, and Saviour of His people.
For his mercy endureth for ever . . . His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting. It is His love and mercy that has redeemed His church. This can be seen in His tender care of her, and will endure to eternal life. Ps. 106:1 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise? (KJV) . . . These words were used by the Jews at the laying of the foundation of the Second Temple (Ezra 3:11).
And of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD . . . the sacrifice of praise (Heb.13:15), the house of the LORD is the church of the Living God, the materials of which are lively stones (1 Pet.2:5), or TRUE believers in Christ; into which NONE should enter without an offering; and this should be a spiritual one, the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; which is well pleasing to Him, because it honors and glorifies Him. This shows that this prophecy belongs to Gospel times; since no other sacrifice is mentioned as brought into the house of God except the sacrifice of praise.
For I will cause to return the captivity of the land as at the first, saith the LORD . . . a release from spiritual captivity, meaning redemption by Christ; which is the foundation of all solid joy, praise and thanksgiving.
Jer. 33:12 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down. (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD of hosts . . . which phrase is often repeated, to give authority to what is said, and to command a belief of it.
Again in this place, which is desolate . . . which was said to be so in verse 10, and certainly was so; being near total destruction, as to be,
Without man and without beast . . . both falling into the hands of the enemy; and not only in the city of Jerusalem, but
In all the cities thereof . . . all the land of Judea; and from there in other countries, even in Gentile ones.
Shall be an habitation of shepherds, causing their flocks to lie down . . . which expresses great peace, no foreign enemy to make afraid or disturb the shepherds and their flocks; and of hard work and industry, plenty and prosperity; though this is to be understood not in a literal, but spiritual sense. For the shepherds mean the apostles of Christ, the first ministers of the Gospel, and pastors of churches, that would be first raised up in the land of Judea, and then sent into and spread in all the world; shepherds under Christ, of His raising, qualifying and calling; to whom He gives a commission to feed His sheep and lambs (John 21:16-17). He assigns them their distinct flocks, and gives them food to feed them with, and to whom they are accountable for those under their care, and the gifts bestowed upon them. It was their business to feed the flock with the solid doctrines of the Gospel, by faithfully administering the ordinances, and in directing all to Christ, where they may find pasture, and watching over the sheep that they do not go astray, and in protecting and defending them from beasts of prey. To lie down in a good fold at night, where they are safe and secure; these shepherds watch over them in every way.
Jer. 33:13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the LORD. (KJV)
In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south . . . into which three parts the land of Judea was divided (Jer.32:44).
Aand in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah . . . in the cities of the two tribes, of which Jerusalem was the capital; and which returned from the captivity, and were settled here, and would be when The Messiah came, here prophesied of, the Great Shepherd of the sheep.
Shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the LORD . . . referring to the custom of shepherds tending their flocks, when they led them out of the fold in the morning, and when they put them in at evening; or to the count them by striking each as it passes with a rod, implying the shepherd's provident care that not one should be lost (Lev.27:32; Mic. 7:14; John 10:28-29; 17:12). This is not to be understood literally, but spiritually.
*****The elect of God, who are intended by the flocks, were in God’s eternal election considered as sheep, and by that act of grace were separated from others; and when an exact account was taken of them, their names were written in Heaven, and in the Lamb's book of life; and they had a seal put upon them (2 Tim2:19; Eph.1:13-14; 4:30). The LORD knows them that are His!
These sheep, are held in the Hands of Christ, where they are securely kept (John 10:14-16, 27-30). He has a perfect knowledge of them; they are sanctified by the Spirit, they have Christ's mark on them, and at the last day, Christ shall deliver them up to the Father.
They all will be numbered, and not one will be lost!
Jer. 33:14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. (KJV)
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD . . . or are coming, meaning future times that are yet to come; five or six hundred years, and then would be fulfilled what is after promised. This is brought in with behold, as being a matter of importance that deserves attention. It is the foremost of the great and mighty things the LORD promised to show to the prophet (verse 3); even the coming of The Messiah, and what concerns His Person and office.
That I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah . . . or that good word; the gracious Word concerning Christ Jesus and salvation by Him; the mercy promised to the fathers; the Good Thing that came out of Nazareth: the Good Shepherd that laid down His life for the sheep, much preferred to the shepherds before spoken of.
*****Many good Words or Promises are made before, concerning the spiritual welfare and prosperity of the church; but this is the best of them all; this is the Good Thing provided for saints under the Gospel dispensation, and promised to them, who are meant by the houses of Judah and Israel. As the Jews themselves agree, show that the words belong to the times of The Messiah; and which God, Who is TRUE and cannot lie, and who is faithful, that has promised, and is well able to perform, and will do.
Now because it seemed unbelievable that a people, reduced as now they were, would ever recover to such a degree of peace and plenty as promised, is here joined in a general approval of these promises. But, the LORD shall perform that Good Thing which He has promised. Although the Promise may sometimes work slowly towards accomplishment, it works surely because of the One Who had made the Promise. The days will come, even though they are long in coming. God does NOT lie (Tit.1:2; Heb.6:18).
That Way Shall Be Made for the
Coming of the Messiah (Jer. 3:15-16)
Jer. 33:15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. (KJV)
In those days, and at that time . . . in those same days before spoken of; in those days to come, and which were hastening on; in the fullness of time, agreed on between the LORD and His only begotten Son; the appointed and determined time. Dear one, He knows the exact date, none of us do!
Will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David . . . not Zerubbabel, but the LORD, The Messiah; who is not only a Branch of David's family, and therefore said to grow up unto him, being of his seed, his son and offspring; but a Branch of righteousness, or a righteous Branch (Isa.60:21; Jer.23:5); perfectly righteous in Himself, and the Author of righteousness to others; which can never be said of Zerubbabel, or of any other branch springing from David . . . except The Messiah. Some Jewish writers interpret it, the Messiah of Righteousness; and the King Messiah.
And he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land . . . judgment upon the blind Pharisees given up to judicial blindness and hardness of heart (Mat.23); and upon the world, and the prince of it (the devil), who was cast out by him; and although Christ did not come the first time to judge the world and all the individuals of it . . . this He shall indeed do at His Second Coming; for ALL judgment, rule and government of His church, is committed to Him by His Father (Mat.28:18; John 3:35; 5:22, 27); and He shall be on the throne to order and establish it with judgment, and to overrule all things for the good of it, for His own and His Father's glory. The LORD shall work out an everlasting righteousness, agreeably to law and justice, for the justification of His people.
*****In those days refers to the days which are coming, the Day of the LORD. The Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David. There has not been a righteous branch so far except One, the One who was born in Bethlehem. He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. We have never had any ruler like that yet . . . but, this prophecy tells us clearly, that we shall have One in the future! Even so, come, LORD Jesus, come!
Jer. 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness. (KJV)
In those days shall Judah be saved . . . the elect of God among the Jews; and all such who are Jews inwardly (Gal.3:26-29), who truly believe in Christ, and confess His Name, praise Him and give Him the glory for our salvation. Judah means one that confesses or praises the LORD; such shall be saved from sin, Satan, the Law, God’s wrath and Hell, by the Branch of Righteousness, The Messiah; Who was raised up (John 1:13-15) and sent to be a Saviour. He came into the world for this reason; He obtained salvation for His people; He is the Captain and Author of it. There is NO other who would be capable of such a task! His Name is Jesus; and this salvation is only to be had from Him, and Him alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
And Jerusalem shall dwell safely . . . the inhabitants of it; those who come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. These being saved by Christ, are in the utmost safety; they have nothing to fear from the justice of God, nor from their enemies, for all enemies are conquered and destroyed; God is pacified towards them; is the God of peace with them; and they have peace with Him, and enjoy great calmness and tranquility of mind; and dwell safely, since the LORD is around them, just as the mountains are around Jerusalem. Christ is their strong hold, into which they run and are safe; the Holy Spirit within them is greater and mightier than their enemies in the world; angels encamp about them, and their salvation is walls and fortifications to them.
And this is the name wherewith she shall be called, the LORD our righteousness . . . the same as The Messiah's Name. Jer. 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (KJV) . . . Christ Jesus is God (John 10:30), and He is our Righteousness; being the Author of it, by His total obedience, sufferings and death; and which becomes ours, for He worked it out for us on that hideous cross, which He now bestows on us, imputes and applies to us.
*****Christ and His Church are one, as Head and members are; and therefore are called by the same name: so the Church is called Christ (1 Cor.12:12). They are in a marriage relationship; Christ is the Husband, and the Church is His spouse; and as husband and wife bear the same name, so do Christ and His Church; moreover, not only Christ is made righteousness to His people, but they are made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor. 5:21); because His righteousness is put upon them, and imputed to them, so that they are righteous as He is righteous (1 Cor.1:30).
The House of David, of Levi, and of Israel Shall Flourish Again, All Three in the Kingdom of Christ (Jer. 33:17-26)
Jer. 33:17 For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; (KJV)
For thus saith the LORD . . . this confirms the above Promise concerning The Messiah; giving a reason why His Coming may be expected; and why salvation, justification and final perseverance of His Church and people, are certain things, and can be completely depended upon.
David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel . . . this is not to be understood of the temporal kingdom of David, which has ended long ago. Jeconiah, that was carried captive into Babylon (Est. 2:6; Jer.24:1; 27:20), was childless, and left no descendants; and Zerubbabel, the only one of David's seed that made any figure after the captivity, was not a king. This is only true of the Man Christ Jesus, of the seed of David, and David’s Son (Mat.1:1; 12:23; 15:22; 21:9; Mar.10:48; 12:35; John 7:42; Rom.1:3; 2 Tim.2:8; Rev.5:5), to whom has been given the throne of his father David; and who reigns over the house of Jacob forever; and of whose kingdom there is no end (Luke 1:32); and as long as Christ is King of saints, which will be forever, David will not lack a Man to sit upon his throne. David's earthly kingdom was but a typical and shadowy one; a type of Christ's spiritual kingdom, which succeeded it, and in which Christ is David's Son and Successor, and whose kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom.
*****Where do you think this Man is today? There is not an Israelite on the Earth who can come close to claim David's throne. The only One who has that claim now sits at God's right hand. Ps. 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. (KJV) . . . God is calling out a people to His Name, getting things ready to put His Son on the throne of this Universe.
Jer. 33:18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me . . . the Levitical priesthood has been abolished long ago; which was typical of Christ's priesthood, and is succeeded by it; who is a Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek (Heb.6:20; 7:17, 21); and who, having offered up Himself a Sacrifice here on Earth for His people, He forever appears in Heaven, in the Presence of God, on their behalf, making intercession for them (1 John 2:1); and as long as He continues to do so, which shall be always, no one shall be lacking before the LORD.
To offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually . . .
the priests would not offer burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually; to present that sacrifice before God, and plead the efficacy and virtue of it with him, which was symbolized by all those sacrifices, and has outdated them, because Christ is much better than they. Some understand this of a continuation of Gospel ministers to the end of the world, who succeeded the priests and Levites; but since they are never called priests and Levites in the New Testament; nor were they properly the successors of the priests and Levites; instead it may be applied to all believers now, who are priests unto God (Rev.1:6; 5:10; 20:6), and offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Christ.
Jer. 33:19 And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, (KJV)
And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah . . . to explain more fully and confirm what was said before; which came at the same time as the other; this not being a new prophecy, but an illustration of the former.
Saying; as follows:
Jer. 33:20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD, if you can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night . . . the covenant of the ordinances of the sun, moon and stars. Jer. 31:35-36 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: 36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. (KJV) . . . And which was formed into a Covenant and Promise to Noah, after the Flood, that day and night would not cease, as long as the Earth remained (Gen.8:22); and which has never been, nor ever can be broken and made void: so
That there should not be day and night in their season . . . or turn; continually succeeding each other: this, as it would not be attempted, so could never be caused by any human.
Jer. 33:21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. (KJV)
Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant . . . David was a type of the Messiah, with whom the Covenant of grace was made, stands fast, and will never be broken (Ps.89:3); for, as the other is impossible, the breaking of the covenant with day and night, or holdng back the certain rotation of them; so likewise as impossible is the breaking of the covenant with David concerning the permanence of His Kingdom in the Messiah.
That he should not have a son to reign upon his throne . . . which he does have a Son in Christ, and always will have; for He shall reign for ever and ever.
And with the Levites my priests, my ministers . . . the Levitical Covenant was first mentioned in: Num.25:12-13 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. (KJV) . . . And again in (Mal. 2:4-5, 8), and is based the Levite' dissociation from Aaron and the golden calf apostasy (Ex. 32:25-29). An everlasting priesthood was promised, and which has been fulfilled in Christ, who has an unchangeable priesthood; a priesthood that will never pass from Him, and go to another (Num.25:13; Heb.7:24).
Jer. 33:22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me. (KJV)
The blessing of innumerable offspring promised to Abraham (Gen. 15:5; 22:17) is here applied to the family of David and the tribe of Levi, because it was on these that the future spiritual welfare of the whole people of Israel rested.
*****Jer. 33:19-22. At the time this prophecy was given, Zedekiah was on the throne of Judah. He was as corrupt and evil as any man ever was. Nebuchadnezzar will put out his eyes and carry him captive. You would think that would put an end to the line of David. But there is One in David's line who can claim his throne, and Almighty God intends to put Him on the throne of this world someday. This is a great prophecy and one that is very difficult to ignore. Dear one, God means exactly what He says. This shall indeed happen!
Jer. 33:23 Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying, (KJV)
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah . . . about the same matter that concerned the continuation of David's seed; the same thing is repeated, that it may be the better believed.
Saying . . . as follows:
Jer. 33:24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them. (KJV)
Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying . . . this people seems to mean some of the Jews, especially those who spoke with Jeremiah in the court of the prison (Jer. 32:12; 38:1).
The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? . . . the two families; Judah and Israel.
Thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them . . .
before them in their judgment. They suppose that I have utterly cast off Israel so as to be no more a nation. My people shows that God has NOT cast off Israel forever.
*****Jer. 33:23-24. This people, say some the enemies of the Jews; but it may be interpreted either of the wicked Jews, wicked men being always full of baseless, disrespectful hopes, being sunk in despair; or maybe such amongst them that were weak in faith, that did not know how to give any firm approval to Promises, because the fulfillment of them seemed unlikely. By the two families here mentioned, the prophet either means the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, or maybe the families of David and Aaron, mentioned before. Thus, saith the LORD, they have spoken scornfully of My people, as if they should never be a nation more, having rulers of themselves and a ministry.
Jer. 33:25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD . . . in answer to the above slander.
If my covenant be not with day and night . . . if it should not stand; if it should be broken; or there should be no longer a succession of day and night,
And if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth . . . concerning the course of the sun, moon and stars, and the influence of the heavenly bodies; and concerning the fruits of the Earth, the seasons of the year, seedtime and harvest, summer and winter; if these are not settled and fixed, and do not appear according to appointment and Promise
(Jer. 31:35-36; Gen. 8:22; Ps. 74:16-17). I who have established the laws of nature am the same God who has made a Covenant with the Church.
Jer. 33:26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them. (KJV)
Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant . . . one thinks that Jacob is put instead of Aaron, because of the two families of David and Aaron before mentioned; but in this latter part of the chapter no mention is made of priests at all; and by the seed is meant One and the same, the spiritual seed of Christ, the characteristic David, and Servant of the LORD (Isa.52:13; 53:11) and which is no other than the seed of Jacob, over whom The Messiah reigns; or the spiritual Israel of God, whether Jews or Gentiles, and whom the LORD never casts away, so as to perish; but they shall all be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation (Jer.31:37); and even the seed of Jacob, and of David, who was of Jacob, in the line of Judah, shall not be in this sense rejected.
So that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob . . . Isaac: (Ps.105:9; Am.7:9, 16), meaning any of the seed of David taken literally; from whom the LORD has taken One, raised up One of his seed, The Messiah, to be a Ruler over all the spiritual seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; or of all that walk in their steps.
For I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them . . . not only their captivity from Babylon, and so the family of David restored and continued until the Messiah would spring out of it; but the spiritual captivity of the Israel of God, of which the other was a type, and would be brought about by The Messiah; who in His love and pity would redeem them, as He has, from sin, Satan, law, Hell, and death.

Many Christians do not see the connection between the seal of God and the mark of the beast. The majority believe that the mark of the beast is a physical mark, like a tattoo, or a microchip embedded in the skin, or an ID number. And they believe that the seal of God is simply receiving the Holy Spirit when we come to believe in Christ Jesus.
To receive the mark of the beast, we would have to go against the commandments of God, and which most of us do (Mat.7:13-14). So while the world is waiting for a physical mark to come, Satan has already deceived millions into breaking God's commandments; and they shall be ready to receive the physical mark of the beast when the Antichrist comes. But . . . if we give our allegiance to God and keep His commandments, following the LORD Jesus Christ, then we have a spiritual seal from God, through the Holy Spirit of God. Who do you give your allegiance to?
THE SEAL OF GOD
The following are verses that refer to a seal of God.
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. (KJV)
2 Cor. 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. (KJV)
Eph. 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (KJV)
Eph. 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (KJV)
The following verses seem to indicate a symbolic seal, not a physical seal.
Rev. 7:2-3 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. (KJV)
Rev. 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. (KJV)
How can we describe a seal? The seal of a king contains three things, the name, his title or claim to authority, and the region of his rule. Henry VIII, King of Britain, Wales and Scotland for example. What is the purpose of a King's seal? The Bible tells us clearly:
Dan. 6:15-17 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. 16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. 17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. (KJV) . . . So the seal of the King is a statement that his decree is not to be changed by anyone.
Rom. 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: (KJV) . . .
Notice that the sign of circumcision is also a seal of righteousness. A sign and a seal are the same.
2 Tim. 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (KJV)
1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (KJV) . . . To depart from iniquity is to keep God's law. The disciples of God, those who know, and are known by God, and call on the Name of Christ, are sealed with His law. The seal of God is in His law, so clearly this is a symbolic seal, not a physical one.
Isa. 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. (KJV)
Eze. 20:12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them. (KJV)
Eze. 20:20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God. (KJV)
Eze. 31:16-17 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. 17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. (KJV)
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. (KJV)
Eph. 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (KJV)
2 Tim. 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (KJV)
(KJV)
Rev. 9:3-4 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. (KJV)
Rev. 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. (KJV)
