Book of Ezekiel
Chapter 38

It is agreed by all scholars that these two chapters are a single prophecy about Gog and Magog. There are many who say how difficult this Chapter is, several saying it as the most difficult in the Old Testament. We are told over and over again that Gog is unknown, as are most of the other places mentioned in this prophecy. It is difficult for us because we do not know who the king is, nor the people intended by it, but I feel sure they were all well known in the times when the prophet wrote this.

The LORD has told us who Gog and Magog actually are. After the thousand years reign of Christ has ended, and after Satan has been loosed for a little while, before Judgment Day, Satan will go forth to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth. Revelation 20:7-10 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8  And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9  And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV)

The New Testament is very specific about this. Gog and Magog are the heathen nations that are in the world in the latter days, referred to here as the four quarters of the earth (Rev.20:8), or the uttermost parts of the earth (Ps.2; Mat.12:42). The identification of Gog and Magog here is absolutely certain. They are stated to be the nations that dwell in the four corners of the earth in the latter days that hate and oppose GOD and His people.

Please consider the on the spot manner of the death of this enormous army. Ezekiel mentioned NO battle, NO military engagement whatsoever! The Almighty GOD simply did things His way! Fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them (Rev.20:9). He was tired of their hatred and their sin! He removed the evil ones!

According to the above passage in Revelation, the total and final destruction of Satan followed right after the destruction of Gog and Magog.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV) . . .  Then the devil, who betrayed them, was thrown into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Satan has power, I will not argue with that. I firmly believe that the LORD allows Satan to tempt us, to see if we will stand firm in our faith in Him, or give up and surrender to the devil.

Satan’s power is NOT eternal. He shall fall one day! The Bible says so! Many people think that the devil is in Hell today. This is not true. He is alive and working hard against GOD and all who stand with GOD! BEWARE!!!

Today’s delusion (damnable heresy, 2 Pet.2:1) peddled by the one world order, that peace and prosperity is to make all men and women of the Earth equal and joint citizens, is absolutely FALSE! That is NOT what GOD'S Word teaches, and His Word is always right and always comes to pass! GOD cannot lie (Tit.1:2). There truly is a time that this shall happen, and only one time, and that for only a short time . . . that being the time when the Antichrist will rule on Earth (Dan.7:8; 9:26; 11:36-45; 2 Thes.2:3-4; Rev.13).

Christians in the United States have watched our democracy, and our Nation change drastically, for the worse! Today GOD fearing citizens have sat back and allowed Communism to stream into every fabric of our homes, schools, churches, and especially all parts of our government. There have been some very ungodly men of our nation voted into office, and then from those high positions, allow all forms of filth, sodomy and perversion to become law. Today, Christians of America have gone to sleep spiritually. Although you think there is nothing you can do; there is . . . you can prepare yourself with the Word of GOD to know the TRUTH. Do NOT be deceived by today’s false prophets, because dear one, all prophecies in the Holy Bible shall be fulfilled exactly as GOD has revealed it.

Chapter 38 tells us of an enemy of the Jews in the latter days, under the name of Gog, that shall invade their land and disturb their peace after they are settled in it. The enemy is described by the countries over which he rules; and against whom the prophet is commanded to set his face, and prophesy of him, because the LORD is against him; and shall cause him to return from Judea unsuccessful. There is a number of his partners, with their warlike tools of the trade and they all are prepared for the invasion of the land of Israel, but Gog’s wicked plans and intentions to spoil and plunder the inhabitants of it, shall in the end be in vain.

The time and place from where and when he should come, are mentioned, as well as GOD'S plan in it, and which had been predicted before by His prophets. The chapter is concluded with GOD’S divine wrath condemning all evil, in which shall be terrible to all the inhabitants of the Earth, and to all creatures in Heaven, Earth and sea; when Gog and his forces shall be destroyed by the sword, by pestilence, and by dreadful storms and tempests, of which a fuller account of destruction is given in the Chapter 39.

If there is any section in the prophecy of Ezekiel that is well known, it is chapters 38 and 39. These two chapters tell of the disapproval of Gog and Magog. Sad to say, these chapters have been interpreted by some who seem to have no knowledge of the prophecy of Ezekiel and what goes with it, and as a result there are some very strange interpretations.

Chapter 37 told us that GOD has a definite purpose for Israel in the future, and Chapters 38 & 39 deal with this. They tell about the final enemy that will come against Israel in the last days. I believe that the enemy mentioned in Chapters 38 and 39 could be Russia.

Theme: The Assault of Gog, and GOD'S Judgment on Him.

The Army and Hatred of Gog (38:1-13)

These events will be in the latter days. It is supposed that these enemies will come together to invade the land of Judea, and the Almighty Lord GOD shall defeat them. Dear one, GOD not only sees who are the enemies of His church are now, but He foresees who will be so in the future, and lets them know by His Holy Word that He is against them. No matter how many may join together against GOD and/or His people, the wicked shall NOT go  unpunished. Judgment Day looms. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_judgment_day_IS_coming.htm

Ezekiel 38:1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, (KJV)

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying . . . this phrase is found 62 times in the Book of Ezekiel. This seems to have come at the same time as the preceding prophecy did, which predicted the restoration and conversion of the Jews; the union of their tribes under the King MESSIAH; and their settlement in their own land: and this regards some disturbance they would meet with, for a short time, by a powerful enemy who shall be  described.

Ezekiel 38:2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, (KJV)

Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog . . . set thy face towards, or against (6:2; 20:46; 21:2; 25:2) Gog. WHO is this Gog that the prophet is to speak boldly to, face to face, and fearlessly declare the wrath of GOD against? Interpreters are divided. Gog is the prince of the land of Magog. The title Gog was most likely a common one of the kings of the country, such as Pharaoh was in Egypt. Chaka was the name given by the Northern Asiatics to their king, and is still a title of the Turkish sultan. Gog may be a reduction of this. In Ezekiel's time there were many northern Asiatics, called by the Greeks, Scythians. These names might be adopted by Ezekiel from the historical fact familiar to men at the time, as ideal titles for the last, great anti-Christian confederacy. Magog . . . (Gen.10:2; 1 Chron.1:5), is the name of a land belonging to Japheth's posterity. Maha, in Sanskrit, means land. Gog and Magog are two peoples (Rev.20:8).
The chief prince of Meshech and Tubal . . . the chief prince, or rather, prince of Rosh, or Rhos, as  in the Septuagint, the Greek version of the Old Testament. Magog was Gog's original kingdom, although he also acquired Meshech and Tubal, so as to be called their chief prince.
And prophesy against him . . . foretell his ruin and destruction, which is hinted at before. Mention is made of his invasion of the land of Judea, and that for the comfort of the Jews, that they might have nothing to fear from this formidable army.

*****It seems to me that Gog is the little horn of Daniel 7 & 8; the prince that shall come in Daniel 9; the king of the north in Daniel 11; the man of sin, the son of perdition, and that wicked in 2 Thes.2; the king of Babylon in Isaiah 13 & 14; the Assyrian of Micah 5; and the beast of Revelation 13. All these Scriptures speak of a man who will come in the last days.

Ezekiel 38:3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: (KJV)

And say, thus saith the Lord God, behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal . . . which is repeated to confirm it, that it would certainly be so; that the LORD, the mighty GOD, and King of kings, would in His wisdom frown upon him, and appear against him. His titles are repeated also, to show that even with all his greatness, grandeur and power, nothing would not protect him from the vengeance of GOD.

*****This is strange language. Here in the Book of Ezekiel GOD has said several times that He is against certain nations. He said it about Babylon; He said it about Egypt; and He said it about the nations which were against His people and against His Person. Now here is a nation that is to arise in the last days, a nation which is against GOD. The reason we know it is against GOD is because GOD clearly says, I am against you. This makes it different from any other nation, because GOD has said this about nations already in existence that have exhibited hatred and rejection of Him, but this nation did not even exist when Ezekiel gave this prophecy . . . yet GOD says I am against you.
It seems that the political economy of Russia rests on the basis that there is no GOD. What about the heathen, pagan nations of the past? Were they not atheistic? No, they were not. They were polytheistic. They believed in many gods. Way back in the beginning, men went off the track, but they did not become atheists. In Noah's day there were no atheists. That was not the problem with those people . . . . their problem was that they had gone far off into sin (Gen.6:5), and worshiped many gods. All the great nations of the past were polytheistic, and the judgments GOD has pronounced in the Book of Ezekiel are against polytheistic nations. Polytheism characterized the ancient world. But Russia is a nation whose basic philosophy is atheistic, a nation that is against God.

Have you ever considered that GOD did not give a commandment against atheism at the beginning? BUT . . . He did give the first two commandments against polytheism: Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (KJV) Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: (KJV)  . . . GOD gave commandments against polytheism, but none against atheism. But, in the time of David, atheism begins to show up. Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. (KJV) . . . For those of us who love the Lord GOD, we know how ridiculous it is to say or believe that there is no God!

This chapter will tell us that this nation in the north with other nations with him will come down against Israel.

WHY Gog Will Invade Israel (38:4)

Ezekiel 38:4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: (KJV)

And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws . . . or, I will put hooks in your jaws, and lead you where I want you to go. This is not to be understood of GOD'S putting hooks into his jaws, and leading him back from his enterprise of invading the land of Judea; as he put a hook in the nose and a bridle in the lips of the king of Assyria, and brought him back from Jerusalem (Isa.37:29), but of his using him in this way, in his wisdom to draw him to the land of Israel, out of his own land, as fish are drawn with the hook out of the water. The sense is, that GOD would work on and effect the heart of Gog that he would be persuaded to come out of his own land and invade Judea; just as the LORD is said to draw Sisera and his army (Judg.4:7). The Targum is, I will persuade thee, and put hooks in thy jaws. Meaning He would incline his heart to take such a step, which would end up in his destruction.
And I will bring thee forth, and all thine army . . . all his large army out of Turkey, and other parts of his provinces.
Horses and horsemen . . . the Turkish armies, mainly consisting of cavalry (Rev.9:16).
All of them clothed with all sorts of armour . . . all of them clothed, their leaders both rich and gaudy, yet well-armed, and their soldiers well provided too, as they and other anti-Christian soldiers march with all warlike provisions.
Even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords . . . or large armies, as the Targum; the Turks have always brought exceptionally large armies into the field (Rev.9;16). A great company; in vast armies, far greater than any of their neighbors can bring out against them. Bucklers for their foot, and shields for their horsemen. Handling swords; meaning ready, expert and strong in using the sword.

*****GOD planned the confusion with which to put this enemy to. It is remarkable that this is put first in the prophecy; before it is foretold that GOD will bring him out against Israel.  It is foretold that GOD will put hooks into his jaws and turn him back, that they might have assurance of their deliverance before they had the prospect given them of their danger. The Lord GOD is so tender to the comfort of His people, and so careful that they may not be frightened. Even before the trouble begins, GOD tells them it will all end well.

Ezekiel 38:5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: (KJV)

Persia, Ethiopia, and Lybia with them . . . these are the associates of the Turks, which shall join with them in this expedition. Persia is the land for the people who are Mahometans, and enemies to the Name of CHRIST. Ethiopia is not the African, which is Abyssinia, or Nubia, or both the old Macrobii, but the Asiatic or Arabian Ethiopia, posterity of Cush, Mahometans too. Libya is a people of Africa, either now subjects of, or confederates with the Turks, and are near enough to join, when the effect shall demonstrate who this Gog is.
All of them with shield and helmet . . . the Ethiopians and  Lybians are described by Jeremiah. Jer. 46:9 Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow. (KJV) . . . With shield and helmet; prepared to save themselves, although they slay their enemies. Some of all these were in the armies of Antiochus against the Jews, and many more will serve in the last army of Gog.

Ezekiel 38:6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. (KJV)

Gomer, and all his bands . . .  the Targum is, all his army. Gomer was the eldest son of Japheth (Gen.10:2), from whom descended the people called by the Greeks, Galatians or Galio-Grecians, who before called Gomarians.
The house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands . . . Togarmah was one of the sons of Gomer (Gen.10:3), whose posterity, according to the Greeks, were the Phrygians; but others rather think the Cappadocians descended from him; and that Togarmah means their country, which also is a part of the Turkish dominions (27:14). The Targum renders it here the province of Germany; as it is also interpreted in the Talmud, but wrongly. Talmud: https://www.gotquestions.org/Talmud.html
And many people with thee . . . from other places and nations, besides those named; especially out of the lesser Asia, as Pamphylia, Cilicia, and other places; and perhaps from Tartary. Tartary is a historical region of Asia and eastern Europe, especially the high plateau of central Asia and its north-western slopes, which formed part of the Tartar empire in the Middle Ages. ALL who join Gog will be against GOD!

*****It seems another proof that identifies Russia is the geographic position. It mentions the nations which will be with Russia in the last days. Gomer is Germany, and the house of Togarmah is Turkey. Of the north quarters gives us the geographic location. And again in verse 15 we read: And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, and also in (39:2), the same location is given: and will cause thee to come up from the north parts. If you look at a map, you will find that Russia is directly north and northeast. In fact, it covers Israel just like that picture you have seen of the fellow under a great big hat. If you start going north of Israel, you end up in Russia. . . . All directions in the Bible are in relation to the land of Israel. North in the Bible is north of the land of Israel. South is south of the land of Israel. West is west of the land of Israel, and east is east of the land of Israel. Israel is the geographical center of the earth as far as the Word of GOD is concerned.
Ezekiel 5:5 Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. (KJV)

Ezekiel 38:7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. (KJV)

Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself . . . with all warlike provisions: this is said sarcastically; and suggests that he would do so . . . but all would be in vain, and to no purpose.
Thou and all thy company, that are assembled unto thee . . . or all thine armies, as the Targum, gathered out of his dominions, and made up of his associates and allies; let them all be furnished with arms, and everything proper for the expedition intended.
And be thou a guard unto them . . . the general of them; let them observe and obey the commands; guide and direct, guard and protect them in their march; and take care of them when entered the land of Judea, that they are not exposed to any unnecessary danger, or cut off by any trick or ambush: this is also said sarcastically; indicating that no matter how much care and caution that the wise and cautious general did . . . he and his army would perish.

WHEN Gog Will Invade Israel (38:8-16)

When will Gog come down? Commentators disagree on this. Some think Russia will invade the land of Palestine at the end of this age, before the church is raptured (1 Thes.4:13-17). Others think Russia will come against Israel at the beginning of the Tribulation period and others think it will be at the end of the Tribulation (Dan.9:27). There are also some who believe this will take place at the beginning of the Millennium. Only GOD knows!
Ezekiel 38:16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes. (KJV) . . . I believe Russia will come in the latter days. I believe that latter days is a term that specifically refers to the end times and the Tribulation Period. This will be the time when the Antichrist comes to power. He will come on a peace platform. Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. (KJV) . . . As a result there will be a false peace for the first part of the Tribulation period; then in the middle of the seven years, Russia will come down from the north into the land of Israel. I think that Russia will most likely trigger the Great Tribulation by breaking the false peace made by the Antichrist and invade Israel.  www.godcannotlie.org/book_of_daniel_ch9.htm

Ezekiel 38:8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. (KJV)

After many days thou shalt be visited . . . after many days, some refer this to the time of the Maccabees; about 200 years after their return, and finishing the repairs of the city wall; others think this is after the end of the thousand years spoken of (Rev.20:7). But I think the full accomplished days are yet to come, when Gog and Magog shall be destroyed, and so I think these days, are the latter days of the MESSIAH'S Kingdom among men. Be visited . . . be called to account, judged and punished for their violence.
In the latter years thou shall come into the land that is brought back from the sword . . . the latter years, speaks of times yet to come. The land . . . means the land of Judea, the right owners of which shall now be returned unto it; who had for many years been kept out of it by the sword of their enemies (Jer.31:2). Thou shalt come, Gog (GOD’S enemies) with all their numbers, into the land of the Jews, who were like this in the time of the Maccabees, and will be the same in the latter days . . . a people of GOD recovered from slavery and captivity, into which the sword of their enemy brought them, but GOD had now gathered them out of the countries.
And is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel . . . against the mountains of Israel, it seems to refer to Gog . . . against the mountains may refer to the people gathered, not against the mountains, for the mountains of Israel seems to mean the land of Judea, and the people of it; who shall be gathered out of the several nations where they are now dispersed, and brought into their own land; described by the mountains of Israel, because Israel is a mountainous country, and a very fruitful one (34:13).
Which have been always waste . . . of a longer time than the 70 years’ captivity (Jer.29:10), even since the destruction of it by the Romans; and if the time of the carrying captive of the ten tribes by Salmanezer is respected, it is longer still. Which have been always waste, either by desolation by the rage and malice of enemies, or because it was so far beyond the memory of many living. The mountains refer to Israel, and they may well be called mountains laid waste; for it is already two thousand four hundred years since the ten tribes were carried away by Shalmaneser . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  http://biblehub.com/topical/s/shalmaneser.htm
But it brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them . . . meaning the Jews, the true owners of the land of Israel, shall now be brought out of each the nations where they are scattered, and shall occupy their own land, and dwell in the utmost security, having nothing to fear from their most powerful enemies, even Gog himself; even though he shall come against them like a terrible storm. They shall dwell safely . . . this began to be partially fulfilled, when for about 380 years after their return, they lived reasonably quiet; but afterwards Antiochus provoked them and did them much damage. What remains of the prophecy is a longer, fuller and quieter prosperity after the slaying of Gog, which shall come to the people of GOD, whose lot it will be to stand up in those latter days. http://biblehub.com/topical/a/antiochus.htm

*****When Israel is back in the land, they will be under the control of the Antichrist, who will make them believe that peace has come to the Earth (Dan.9:26-27), and that all of the problems of the Earth are settled and they are entering the Millennium. But this would not be true, and they will find in the midst of the Tribulation Period that out of the north will come their enemy, Russia. Millennium; general Scriptures about: (Isa.65:17-25; Zep.3:11-13; Zec.9:9-10; 14:16-21; Mat,16:18-19; 26:29; Mk.14:25; Heb.8:11; Rev.14:6; 20:1-15).

Ezekiel 38:9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee. (KJV)

Thou shall ascend and come like a storm . . . a storm, black and terrible that suddenly comes, causing darkness and fear; making much noise, and threatening danger; indicating that the Turks will come into the land of Judea suddenly to surprise it, with great wrath and fury, and threatening them with utter destruction. So the king of the north is said to come (Dan.11:40).
Thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land . . . to cover the land, Gog and his bands shall be a storm that overspreads the whole land with darkness and distress; indicating the vast number of his army, which would overspread the land of Judea.
Thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee . . . all thy bands, troops. His own army would be very large, but would be greatly increased by his confederates, those voluntarily joining him in this mission. Many people . . . many in number, great in courage and strength.

Ezekiel 38:10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: (KJV)

Thus saith the Lord GOD, it shall also come to pass . . . the Lord GOD is all-knowing, knowing the thoughts of men's hearts, and knows their thoughts before they are conceived, and can foretell what they will be, and knows what shall come to pass. It is now over two 2000 years ago since this was said, and yet is not fulfilled, but dear one, you can rest assured what was spoken by the Lord GOD shall certainly be fulfilled, to the letter!
At the same time shall things come into thy mind . . . when the Jews shall be in their own land, dwelling in peace and security; and when Gog or the Turk shall make preparation to disturb them, and shall enter into their land suddenly and furiously.
And thou shall think an evil thought . . . to do mischief to the Jews; to disturb their peace, to dispossess them of their land, and plunder their substance.

Ezekiel 38:11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, (KJV)

And thou shall say . . . what came into his mind, this he shall say to his wise counsellors or to the generals and officers of his army; or to his confederates and allies, and to encourage them to join him, and go with him.
I will go up to the land of unwalled villages . . . a land which has nothing but villages in it, with no walls around them to protect them; this he said by way of contempt . . . and to observe how easily he could conquer it, there being nothing in his way to hinder him, or give him trouble.
I will go to them that are at rest, and dwell safely . . . this shall be as the Jews in the latter day, when they shall own and acknowledge the MESSIAH (Jer.23:5). They will dwell in their own land, where they will live in quiet and peace, thinking and doing no harm to any, nor mistrusting their neighbors, nor doing any harm to them, for they shall live in the utmost tranquility and security; and which Gog will take the advantage of; and from there promise themselves an easy defeat of them.
All of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates . . . no walls to their cities; no gates to walls; no bars on gates; but without either; being under the protection of GOD, and putting their trust in Him, Who is as a wall of fire round about His people; and is better to them than gates with bars.

Ezekiel 38:12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land. (KJV)

To take a spoil, and to take a prey . . . these are the continued words of Gog; suggesting that he would have no reason to fight; he would have nothing else to do but to seize the goods and plunder the substance of the people.
To turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited . . . places that were before desolate, and had lain long so, but now populated and cultivated; these he would attack and demolish, and make a spoil and prey of.
And upon the people that are gathered out of the nations . . . gathered out of the nations is a description of the Jews, as before (38:8).
Which have gotten cattle and goods . . . so that it should seem that Gog will not immediately attack the Jews upon their possession of the land of Judea; but sometime after, when they had settled in it, and had obtained much wealth and riches in cattle and goods, and then think to have a fine plunder of them.
That dwell in the midst of the land . . . the midst of the land may mean Jerusalem, situated in the midst of the land of Israel.

Ezekiel 38:13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? (KJV)

Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish . . . Sheba (27:22) was southward, and contains all the coast which assisted Gog. Dedan is the Idumeans, in the eastern parts of Arabian Desert: by these are noted the eastern nations that assisted, say some. The merchants of Tarshish, the inhabitants of the sea-coast westward, and Magog north. Robbers by land on three sides, pirates by sea on the fourth, in a confederacy to spoil the church of GOD.
With all the young lions thereof . . . young men thirsty for blood, but more for spoil, flock to Gog, resolved to join, if they may rob and spoil for themselves. Some interpret the young lions as sea pirates, for their cruelty and greed.
Shall say unto thee, art thou come to take a spoil? . . . art thou come to take a spoil? this repeated inquiry made by these, is not so much to sound the intentions of Gog, as it is a surrender and agreement to come to his assistance; and on condition they might have, possess, and carry away what they seize, they are for him.
Hast thou gathered thy company together to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? . . . all of this is supposed might be done easily; only they might wonder that so rich a potentate as the Turk should trouble himself to raise such an army, and come so far, for cattle and goods, and silver and gold of which he had plenty. GOD gives an answer.

GOD'S Judgments (38:14-23)

The enemy would make a terrible descent upon the land of Israel. When Israel dwells safely under the Divine protection, shall not Gog be made to know it by finding that trying to destroy them are made in vain? Promises of security are treasured in the Word of God, against the troubles and dangers.

Ezekiel 38:14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? (KJV)

Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say unto Gog . . . since these are his thoughts and plans, and his big words, which he will try to put in practice, and be applauded for it by others; Ezekiel was to deliver this prophecy concerning Gog.
Thus saith the Lord GOD, In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shall thou not know it? . . . In that day (38:8), when Israel returns to their own land, and they dwell in it safely (34:25; 38:11), that they have abundance of cattle, gold and silver, that they have no walls, no gates, and no bars to protect them . . . Gog shall know it! Since Israel lives without fear or suspicion of any enemy to annoy them, they may be easily surprised and taken . . . Gog shall know it! And when this coms to pass, it will soon be known by the Turks, through their informers and spies  . . . shall thou not know? . . . YES! They shall know!  They will be informed how weak, yet how rich, how easy it is to make them a prey, and they will believe and try it.

Ezekiel 38:15 And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: (KJV)

And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts . . . thou shalt come (38:9), by many interpreters, thought to be the king of the north (Dan.11:44).  From thy place; out of thine own land. Out of the north parts; from Scythia, from the Euxine and Caspian seas, and countries around there.
Thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses . . . thou, the leader and chieftain. The Turkish armies consisting mainly on horses, as has been observed (38:4). Many people, mighty and numerous (38;6,9).
Riding upon horses (38:4).
A great company, and a mighty army . . . a great company (38:9), their number was many, and they were superior in strength and courage.

Ezekiel 38:16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes. (KJV)

And thou shall come up against my people of Israel . . . (38:9), which is repeated for the certainty of it; and not for his comfort, but his ruin; not to the terror of Israel, but for the glory of GOD!
As a cloud to cover the land . . . the land of Israel, so great would be his army (38:9).
It shall be in the latter days . . . in the latter days (38:8), of the Kingdom of the MESSIAH, when the Jews shall be converted, and are returned to their own land (Hos.3:5).
And I will bring thee against my land . . . I will bring thee (38:4), not to possess it, not to hurt it, not to injure the people of it: but;
That the Heathen may know me . . . Gog gathers all from all quarters to be with him to take the spoil, it is GOD Who brings them together to do that among them which may make the heathen see and admit His Hand in it. They go against GOD and His people in proud contempt, but GOD does it to glorify His Name and to justify His people. The pagan kingdoms, who by GOD'S judgments on Gog will come to the knowledge of the true GOD, and acknowledge Him, and will become the kingdoms of our LORD, and of His CHRIST (Rev.11:15).
When I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes . . . GOD will send Gog to invade the land to show the nations WHO He is, and to show His holiness by what He does through Gog. The heathen shall confess that GOD is indeed a great GOD over all, a gracious and faithful GOD to His people, and a just GOD to all. Before their eyes; in the sight of all the heathen that are with Gog in his expedition and much more in the sight of GOD'S own magnificently delivered people.

*****Since Israel is dwelling in peace, and Antichrist has deceived everyone, GOD is Israel's only source of help. He Himself will deal with Gog. War will break out. The Great Tribulation will begin (which is the final 3 ½ years of the Tribulation period) in all of its frenzied fury. The whole Earth will be a disaster. Judgments, one right after the other, will come upon the Earth. Matthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.(KJV)

Ezekiel 38:17 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them? (KJV)

Thus saith the Lord GOD . . . asking Gog the question that follows:
Art thou he of whom I have spoken of old time by my servants the prophets of Israel . . . art thou he?, this is either by way of contempt from GOD, upon him and all his preparations, or by way of warning of impending danger. All his bold readiness GOD had foreseen, had spoken of and He will defeat just as He had foretold. Of whom I have spoken . . . it is not stated that it is written, but that it was spoken of. In old time . . . in past years, or in the times when those prophets lived. My servants the prophets of Israel . . . not by divination or by their soothsayers, but GOD’S true prophets, His servants whom He sent (Dan.11; Zec.14). Soothsayers: (Isa.2:6; Dan.2:27; 4:7; 5:7, 11)
Which prophesied in those days many years that I will bring thee against them? . . . WHO were the prophets that prophesied of Gog before Ezekiel, since he is the first to mention him? Even though Gog is not mentioned by name, I think that he was prophesied of under other names. Consider Isaiah, under the name of Leviathan (isa.27:1); and by Micah under the name of the Assyrian (Mic.5:5). The Jews say that Eldad and Medad prophesied of Gog, those two prophets prophesied one prophecy at one time, but this is not to be depended upon. It must be considered as spoken of at the time of the accomplishment of this prophecy, and so may have respect to the prophet Ezekiel, or to Joel (Joel 3:1), and to Zechariah (Zec.14:1), and also to the book of the Revelation (Rev.16:14).

*****Although the prophets of GOD had not foretold this as Ezekiel did, yet when the question shall be asked by the church, it will be so many hundreds of years past, it may be well to consider what the following prophets said. The prophets spoke of this powerful enemy and his coming, and we can see that this foe could indeed be Gog, as well as others in those places.
Isaiah 26:20-21 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21  For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. (KJV)
Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. (KJV)
Jeremiah 30:23-24 Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. 24  The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it. (KJV)
Joel 3:1 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, (KJV)
Joel 3:15-16 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. 16  The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. (KJV)
Micah 5:5-6 And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. 6  And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders. (KJV)

Ezekiel 38:18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. (KJV)

And it shall come to pass at the same time, when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD . . . as before prophesied of and described (38:16).
That my fury shall come up in my face . . . GOD’S fury shall come up in His face, as a man's blood rises up in his face, and his face gets red when he is furious. This fury seems to be against Gog himself; the LORD being provoked by his effort against the land of Israel, and the wicked designs he had to spoil and plunder it.

Ezekiel 38:19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; (KJV)

For in my jealousy, and in the fire of my wrath, have I spoken . . . not against Israel, but against Gog, who had evil thoughts against Israel, and now was about to attack them. Because of the passion for His own glory, and for the good of His people, and in outrage against His and Israel’s enemies, the Lord GOD declares and decides that in my jealousy for my own people, that He would save them, and defend His glory (Eze.39:25. Zec.1:14). In the fire of my wrath have I spoken, against His enemies, Gog and all those who joined him.
Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel . . . surely is in Hebrew the form of an oath (36:5). A great shaking . . . a very great disturbance and uproar, like an earthquake, as the word signifies, for such an army, with their threats, assaults and sieges will shake cities, towns and the hearts of the stoutest men.
In the land of Israel . . . Gog’s coming against the land of Israel, with the vast preparations and the proud threats against Israel will make many hearts shudder, as well as very foundations of the cities. Some understand this shaking of a literal earthquake, and compare this with the following, which speaks of an earthquake that will be about this time.
Zechariah 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. (KJV)   http://www.godcannotlie.org/zec_ch14.htm
Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. (KJV)

Ezekiel 38:20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. (KJV)

So that the fishes of the sea shall shake at my presence . . . it seems that this great shaking shall not be because of the army of Gog, and the devastations that it shall make; but because of the almighty Presence of GOD, which will be so clear in the destruction of his army, that the fishes of the sea shall shake!
And the fowls of the heaven, and the beast of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the earth . . . this must be understood symbolically, and in reference to earthquakes, which both shake and terrify all kind of creatures. The blow GOD gives to Gog will be so terrible, that all nature will seem to be thrown into a convulsion by it (Jer.4:24; 10:10).
And the mountains shall be thrown down . . . like they are at times by earthquakes; and as the mount of Olives will at this time cleave in the midst (Zec.14:4). Dear one, GOD is powerful!
And the steep places shall fall . . . some render steep places towers; others say it may mean stairs or steps, as in a ladder; and is translated stairs (Song 2:14). It could be that mounts are raised by besiegers of a city, so that they would be able to scale the walls of it (4:2; 21:22; 26:8). Another says that these steep places are rocks hanging over, and seem as if they were falling; which could agree with this; and it could be in some of those cliffs, there are like stairs or steps to go up them.
And every wall shall fall to the ground . . . this shows that the words are not to be taken literally, but symbolically; only to express how great the power of GOD’S Presence would be felt by all creatures, in all parts of the land; because at this time the Jews will live in a land of un-walled villages and in cities without walls, bars and gates (38:11).

*****This gives us the description of the proofs of GOD'S Presence against His enemies. The effects of His great displeasure against them are seen in all creatures, realizing that their Creator is angry, even though they do not know with whom or for what. If this is interpreted literally, there are some parallels: when GOD marched before Israel through the Red Sea, the fishes saw, trembled and fled (Ps.77:16, 19). When He breaketh the cedars (Ps.29:5), and the birds that made their nests there shake at His Presence and almighty power. When Sinai trembled, Lebanon and Sirion skipped like a young unicorn, the creeping things in them surely shook, as well as the beasts feeding on them (Ps.29:6). But dear one, all those who do not fear GOD'S displeasure, and are not shaken with their own guilt, shall one day much more shake. Mountains may be great ones, but when GOD comes to judge Gog, He will by His almighty power shake the world as it has never been shaken before, and that shall just be an introduction to Judgment Day for unbelievers (Rev.20:11-15). http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_judgment_day_IS_coming.htm

Ezekiel 38:21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother. (KJV)

And I will call for a sword against him . . . call, to summon and awaken. A sword . . . GOD’S  army, the people of Israel. Against him, against Gog and his powers. The reason why there would be such a commotion in the land of Israel was because the Lord GOD has the swords of all kings at His command, and will call for the Christian kings to come to the assistance of the Jews, and fight against Gog.
Throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD . . . throughout the land of Israel, which is mountainous; and is called the LORD'S, because He has chosen it for Israel, given it to them, and now dwelt among them. In all parts of the land where the enemy is, the sword of the Jews, and of those kings that would come in to the Jews assistance at the call of GOD, shall be sent against them, and cut Gog and his army off.
But every man's sword shall be against his brother . . . as were the swords of the Midianites (Judg.7:22), and of the enemies of Jehoshaphat (2 Chron.20:22). The army of Gog will be made up of mixed people of many nations who hate GOD, who will fight among themselves, and destroy one another.

Ezekiel 38:22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. (KJV)

And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood . . . not only the sword of the Jews and the sword of Christian Kings shall be drawn against Gog, but the sword of Gog's soldiers would be against one another. On top of that, the LORD Himself would plead with Gog, taking vengeance on him, and send a pestilence in his army, which would destroy vast numbers of it; as He did the when the army of Sennacherib was destroyed in one night (2 Ki.19:35; Isa.37:36), and make a great slaughter among them by that and other judgments.
And I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain . . . GOD would bring a horrible storm of His divine wrath (Ps.11:6), as Gog came into the land of Israel like a storm, so he shall be destroyed by a storm much more terrible . . . by the Lord GOD.
And great hailstones . . . hailstones like those that were cast upon the Canaanites (Josh.10:11), and as there will be on the enemies of the church of God, at the pouring out of the seventh vial (Rev.16:21).
Fire and brimstone . . . like those that GOD rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen.19:24), suggesting that in a like manner GOD will deal with those enemies of His people. So at the battle of Armageddon, which seems to be the same as this, the beast and the false prophet will be taken alive, and cast into a lake of fire burning with brimstone (Rev.19:20), and to this storm of fire and brimstone upon Gog there is a reference in (Rev.20:9).

*****GOD will pleadwith Gog as Judge and Avenger in a most dreadful way, whether you take the words symbolically or literally. GOD had put down others, such as Sennacherib's army by pestilence, most likely this was the angel's sword; and others such as Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir with blood by their own swords (2 Chron. 20;10, 22-23); the Amorites with hailstones (Josh.10:11), Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone (Gen.19:24), and the old world with an overflowing flood (Gen.7:19-24). Each event was dreadful, but the destruction of Gog will be the most terrible. Whether these things are symbolic or literal, they tell us how great the final ruin of the enemies of GOD and His church shall be.

Ezekiel 38:23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD. (KJV)

Thus will l magnify myself, and sanctify myself . . . this shows the greatness of GOD’S power, and the firmness of His justice and holiness, and glorify these and all the other of His perfections, in the destruction of the enemies of His people.
And I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD . . . heathen nations shall now come to the knowledge of the true GOD, and His only begotten Son, JESUS CHRIST, and of the TRUE Christian religion, and shall embrace and profess it (38:16). The kingdoms of the world will now become the LORD'S (Rev.11:15) . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm

*****In this terrible way, GOD will magnify Himself; and clearly prove that He is a holy, faithful, just, powerful, wise and merciful GOD toward His people, and that He is the great, just and terrible One against the church's enemies. The Lord GOD, in all this, will be glorified. The end He aimed at (38:16) shall be fulfilled (38:23). And as a result He shall magnify and sanctify Himself. In the destruction of sinners GOD reveals that He is a great and Holy God, and He will do so through eternity. Dear one, if people do not magnify and sanctify GOD as they should, He will magnify Himself! This we should seriously desire and pray for daily, Father, glorify Thy Name.

Special Comments

Who Are Gog and Magog? Who is Gog? Where is the land of Magog? Where is Meshech and Tubal? Do any of these places or persons have anything to do with the events that are to take place in the latter days? Yes!

Gog is called the prince of Meshech and Tubal, provinces of Asia Minor. The geographical area that these would have included would be compared today to parts of Iran, all of Turkey and the southern provinces of Russia.

Who is Gog? The places of Gog's allies do not help us to identify who Gog is. Since Gog is a symbol of GOD’S enemies, we might consider that Gog is a symbol for Babel or Babylon, since Babylon was omitted from the nations mentioned in the prophecies against the nations in Ezekiel 25:1 through 32:32. That fact is unusual, in that it omits the one nation that was at that time holding Judah captive. It is strange to omit the one nation that was the most on their minds at that time. This humble servant does not know for a certainty, but it seems that Babylon may be Gog.

When will all this take place? Nothing spoken of in these chapters has ever taken place in history, so all opinions would place the events of Ezekiel Chapters 33-48 in a symbolic or spiritual kind of interpretation. The setting for these chapters is in the latter days, where a conflict between GOD and evil is concluded and the wickedness of this present age shall be replaced with peace, righteousness and the divine Presence of Almighty GOD, such as has previously been unknown to mankind.

There are seven messages about what Gog, the enemy of Israel, is certain to face:
#1. The LORD will bring Gog and his allies against Israel (38:1-9; Rev.16:13-14; 20:7-8).
#2. Gog will invade Israel (38:10-13).
#3. Gog will invade Israel from the north (38:14-16).
#4. GOD will bring tremendous judgment against Gog (38:17-23).
#5. It will take 7 years to gather up the spoils and 7 months to bury the dead from Gog's army (39:1-16).
#6. Gog will be eaten by the birds of the air and the beasts of the field in a great supper (39:17-24; Rev.19:17-21)
#7. This prophecy will accomplish the salvation of GOD and the restoration of Israel (39:25-29).

Ezekiel Chapters 38-39 describe one of the most dreadful conflicts in the prophecies of the end times. It sees a predictable judgment of GOD coming to a climax of history with the forces of evil completely destroyed. Some say that Gog being Russia has never been sustained, but the southern part of the republic may still be involved. The true identities of most of the participants remain unknown. History shall reveal that GOD cannot lie (Tit.1:2), and any prophecies that He has spoken in the Holy Word shall be fulfilled to the letter! See what Jesus said: John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. (KJV) . . . Prophecy in the long run points to the fact that CHRIST was right, and is always right!
