The Book of Revelation

Chapter 11

The Two Witnesses - Revelation 11:1-14

Rev. 11:1-2 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. [2] But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. (KJV) Then John was given a measuring rod, and was told, "Go, measure the Temple of God and the altar, and the number of worshipers. But do not measure the outer courtyard, for it has been turned over to the nations. They will trample the holy city for 42 months.

Chapters 10 & 11 are parenthetical chapters, giving us more information. Nothing in either of these two chapters move the events forward, they simply give us more detail about the time period of the seven Trumpet Judgments. Rev.11:1-2 is what Jesus was talking about in the following. Luke 21:24-B . . . . . and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. (KJV) The Temple is more than likely the one which shall be rebuilt in Jerusalem; the one where the Antichrist will demand to be worshipped, after he has put a stop to Jewish worship, after he breaks the peace treaty with Israel (see chapter 6). “Measuring” is claiming; symbolizing the Temple belonging to God. Measuring (counting) those who worship Indicates God is dealing with Israel. This is clearly Daniel’s 70th week (Dan.9:27). John was told not to measure the courtyard, for God has allowed the nations (Gentiles) to trample it under foot for 3 1/2 years. This clearly indicates that this is the last half of the “week” (which is 7 years, the Great Tribulation). . . . http://www.hisservants.org/tribulation_what_h_s.htm . . . http://www.hisservants.org/tribulation_why_h_s.htm

Rev. 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. (KJV) God will give power to His two witnesses, and they will be clothed in sackcloth and will prophesy for 1,260 days.

Notice the number of God’s witnesses here! So small, only two, yet enough! They prophecy in sackcloth, which symbolizes their persecuted condition, and the deep sorrow they feel for the horrid abominations against that which they protest. These two amazing preachers will be raised up by God in the middle of the Great Tribulation, for they shall witness 3 1/2 years. WHO are these men? Elijah is a very good possibility for one (Mal.4:4-6; 2 Kings 2:11), and many think the other one is Moses, because Moses was with Christ at the Transfiguration (Mat.17:1-5). Enoch is another possibility (Gen.5:24; Heb.11:5), but many say no, because he was a Gentile. I do know that only Enoch and Elijah did not die but were taken live to Heaven; and that the Bible clearly states that all men must die once (Heb.9:27), and that neither of these two men died. NO ONE knows who these two witnesses are except God. And it really doesn’t matter WHO they are.

Rev. 11:4-5 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. [5] And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. (KJV) These two prophets are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of all the Earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire will flash from the mouths of the prophets and consumes their enemies. This is how anyone who tries to harm them shall die.

The two olive trees remind us of the vision in Zechariah 4. These two men are anointed by God and empowered by His Holy Spirit. The candlesticks refer to them as being bearers of God’s light in this very dark time. These two men are granted miraculous power to bring fire down from Heaven to kill their enemies. This reminds us of Elijah (1 K.18:38; 2 K.1:10). NO ONE will be able to kill these two men during this 3 1/2 year time period, but anyone who dares to try to hurt them, will die.

Rev. 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. (KJV)
These two men shall have power to shut the skies so that no rain will fall for as long as they prophesy. And they also have power to turn the rivers and oceans into blood, and to send every kind of plague upon the earth as often as they think necessary.

Whoever these two fantastic men are, their service to the Lord is outstanding!

They have complete power to:

  • (1) Kill their enemies.
  • (2) Keep it from raining.
  • (3) Turn waters to blood.
  • (4) Bring any plague they wish upon the Earth.

The first two make us think of Elijah; the last two of Moses. We are not given much information about Enoch. There are only 11 verses in the Bible that bear his name. But Enoch truly was a man of God (Gen.5:24; Heb.11:5).

Rev. 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. (KJV) When they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the bottomless pit will declare war against them. He will conquer them and kill them.

Please NOTICE: only when they have completed their task, will these two men be killed. NOTHING can or will touch either of them until their job is done! But, when they are done, God will permit their enemy to kill them. The “beast” is the Antichrist (2 Thes.2:3-4, man of sin) who is completely under the control of Satan.

Rev. 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. (KJV) The bodies of these two men will lie in the main street of Jerusalem, the city which is called "Sodom" and "Egypt," the city where their Lord was crucified.

These two amazing men are NOT given a decent burial, revealing the cold-hearted, cruel, savage and inhuman behavior that will take place in those days. They will be treated like dead animals! Look around you . . . we are headed that way FAST! (See Rom.1:24-32; 2 Tim.3:1-9). No compassion, no concern, no love! This will take place in the city of Jerusalem. Sodom symbolizes idolatry, moral corruption. Egypt symbolizes spiritual darkness.

Rev. 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. (KJV) For three and a half days, all people, tribes, languages, and nations will stare at their bodies. No one will be allowed to bury them.

Fifty years ago, the entire world viewing these bodies would have been impossible. But with today's technology, TV and the internet, the whole world can see everything that happens anywhere in the world. This will be news . . . big time! Can you imagine how these two men will be hated? They spoke for God, the people did NOT want to hear any part of it! The witnesses killed their enemies, stopped the rain, brought plagues, made water unusable, etc. The people’s hatred will be intense! There will be NO remorse for their deaths! The stench of the unburied bodies for 3 1/2 days will be dreadful. Even Pilate allowed Jesus’ friends to take down His Body for a decent burial. Not so with these witnesses!

Rev. 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. (KJV) All the people on Earth will give presents to each other to celebrate the death of the two prophets who had tormented them.

Every time someone brings God’s Word to people, telling them of their sins; there will be hatred and resentment. These two men never stop witnessing for 3 1/2 years! The people of the world will be glad when Antichrist kills these two witnesses. They will rejoice and celebrate as they never have before. This will be the devil’s Christmas the world abroad! A world-wide holiday! People will celebrate the Antichrist’s murders. Christmas is getting more and more pagan with each passing year, To many, Christmas is just another excuse to get drunk, get high and have wild parties. The birth of Christ is not even considered in most homes. It’s a sad fact that Christmas is fast becoming an anti-Christian holiday. Millions of unbelievers world-wide celebrate “Christmas.” . . . http://www.hisservants.org/christmas_h_s.htm

Rev. 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. (KJV) After three and a half days, the spirit of life from God entered them, and these men stood up! People will be horrified worldwide!

Consider the range of the media today. Television and computers are every where! All this; the deaths, the dead bodies in the street, the non-stop celebration, shall be greatly publicized. BUT . . . now, something awesome takes place! These two men of God are raised up! They are resurrected! They are brought back to life! They stand on their feet! The Holy Spirit quickens the spiritually dead, and He shall quicken the dead bodies of these two witnesses who have been lying in the street for 3 1/2 days. Can you imagine the fear that will take place in the people of the world? My friend . . . this shall happen! And the unbelieving world shall see it!

Rev. 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. (KJV) Then a loud voice shouted from Heaven to the two men, "Come up here!" And they rose to Heaven in a cloud (Acts 1:9), as their enemies watched.

In verse 11 we have the resurrection of the two witnesses. In this verse, they are called up into Heaven! This is the ascension of the two witnesses. The end result of these two major miracles will strike terror into the souls of God’s enemies! The impact of these two witnesses being exalted in such an awesome manner, shall produce a tremendous shock in the anti-Christian empire.

Rev. 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. (KJV) And in that same hour there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed a tenth of the city. Seven thousand people died in that earthquake. And everyone who did not die was terrified and gave glory to the God of Heaven.

God again shows His amazing power! There shall be a terrible earthquake, which will destroy one tenth of Jerusalem, and kill 7000 people. All those left will be absolutely terrified, and FINALLY give glory to the God of Heaven! This particular earthquake seems to be limited just to Jerusalem, as was the case when Christ was crucified (Mat.27:51-52), and too, when He rose from the dead (Mat.28:2).

Rev. 11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly. (KJV) The second woe judgment is past, but it's not over! The third woe judgment is soon to come.

This ends the second woe judgment. For the 1st woe, see Rev.9:1-12. The 3rd woe will soon arrive.

The Seventh Trumpet - Revelation 11:15-19

Rev. 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (KJV) When the seventh angel blew his trumpet, there were booming voices in Heaven: "The whole world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever."

Great voices in Heaven announce what has always been true; the world’s Kingdoms belong to God and Christ! ALL the power of the rulers of Earth is gone, ALL is turned over to the rightful Ruler! The eternal reign of God is now here, as prophesied in the Old Testament (Ex.15:18; Ps.2:2; Ps.10:16; Dan.2:44; 7:14,27; Isa.9:6-7; Zech.14:9). This is the beginning of the end of this world as we know it, although several more things must come to pass before the final victory. This will be the answer to our prayer: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.”

Rev. 11:16-17 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, [17] Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. (KJV) The twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped Him, saying, "We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is, the One who always was, and the One who is to come, for now You have begun to reign.

In the reign of Antichrist, God’s law will be completely forgotten; made null and void by formality and man-made laws. God’s Word was locked away from the people, but now that is all changed! The 24 elders fall flat on their faces and worship God for who He is, and for claiming all that has been His all along!

Rev. 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. (KJV) The nations were angry because of You, but now the time of Your wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward your servants. You will reward your prophets and your true children, all who fear Your Name, from the least to the greatest. You will destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth.

The nations being angry reveals that the stubborn, stiff-necked rebellion of mankind will continue to the very last moment. The heart of man is constantly rebelling against God. People will be furious because God's wrath has come. If you are one who believes that the world is getting better and better, and that God will never punish sin but allow ALL people to access Heaven; you have been led astray! You have NOT been reading God’s Word! God does indeed intend to punish sinners (unbelievers), and NO ONE will enter Heaven without Christ! This great and incredible Book tells us this Truth over and over again! I do hope that you believe God! God shall destroy ALL who cause corruption, violence, evil and wickedness, and destroy the Earth. Count on it!

Rev. 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. (KJV) Then the Temple of God in Heaven was opened and the Ark of His covenant could be seen inside the Temple. Lightning flashed, thunder crashed and roared; there was a great hailstorm, and there was a tremendous earthquake.

The very presence of the “ark” indicates that all God’s judgments that are about to take place are based on His Law. And God CANNOT lie, so He will always keep His covenants. Lightning, voices, thunder, the earthquake and hail, all speak of the horrible judgments yet to come.
