Chapter 5, Evil Spirits Confess Jesus’ Divinity

Evil Spirits Confess Jesus’ Divinity

Matthew 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? (KJV) Art Thou come to torment us before the time - the demons KNEW that Christ was their destined Tormentor. They KNEW the time would come, but was not yet. They KNEW the time was set and fixed for the judgment that was certain (Rev.20:7-10,15). This verse alone should quell the thoughts of those people who say there is no Hell! All unbelievers should anticipate, consider and dread the torments of an actual, literal and eternal Hell!
Mark 1:24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. (KJV) Evil spirits (demons) are ruled by Satan. Their work is to tempt people to sin. They are fallen angels who joined Satan when he rebelled. Though not all disease comes from Satan, demons can cause a person to become mute, deaf, blind, or insane and cause multiple problems in life. But in EVERY case where demons confronted Jesus, they lost their power. So this tells us that God limits what evil spirits can do; and they can do nothing without His permission. During Jesus’ life on Earth, demons were allowed to be very active so that Christ could demonstrate His power and authority over them.
This evil spirit knew immediately that Jesus was the Holy One of God. By including this event in his Gospel, Mark was establishing Jesus’ credentials, showing that even the spiritual underworld recognized Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus is GOD!

Let us alone, what have we to do with thee is an expression used often in the Old Testament (1 Kings 17:18; 2 Kings 3:13; 2 Chron. 35:21). It expresses entire separation of interests. A similar application of it is used by our Jesus to His mother (John 2:4). Thou Jesus of Nazareth was a Name originally given to Him to express contempt, but it was soon used as a Name of reverence, respect and affection by those who honored our Lord (Luke 18:37; Mark 16:6; Acts 2:22). Art thou come to destroy us? Or "Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?" (Mat.8:29, above). The evil spirits (demons) were horrific tormentors and destroyers of their victims; but they KNOW that Jesus is their own destined Tormentor and Destroyer; and they anticipate and dread what they know is coming! Too bad unbelievers today can’t see what awaits them! I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God . . . The expression, "Holy One of God," seems to be taken from the Messianic Psalm (Ps.16:10), in which our Lord, Jesus is designated as "Thine Holy One."

Mark 3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. (KJV) The evil spirits KNEW that Jesus was the Son of God, but they refused to turn from their evil purposes, like people. Knowing about Jesus, or even believing that He is God’s Son, does NOT guarantee your salvation. You must also be willing and have a desire to follow Him and obey Him.

Mark 5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. (KJV) What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? (Mark 1:24, above). I adjure (ask, beg, plead) thee by God, that thou torment me not - or, as in Mat.8:29, above, "Art Thou come to torment us before the time?" They may have felt as if their time had come already.

Luke 4:34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. (KJV) A man possessed by a demon was in the synagogue where Jesus was teaching. This man made his way into the place of worship and verbally abused Jesus. It is naive to think that we will be sheltered from evil in the church. Satan is happy to invade our presence wherever and whenever he can. But Jesus’ authority is much greater than Satan’s temporary power; and where Jesus is present, demons cannot stay for long. What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? See: Mark 1:24; 5:7. The people back then were amazed at Jesus’ authority to drive out demons . . . evil spirits ruled by Satan, sent by him to harass people and tempt them to sin. Demons are fallen angels who have joined Satan in rebellion against God. Jesus faced many demons during His time on Earth, and He ALWAYS exercised authority over them. Not only did the evil spirit leave this man; Luke records that the man was not even injured.

Luke 4:41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. (KJV) Why didn’t Jesus want the demons to reveal who He was? Jesus would reveal His identity according to God’s timetable. He would not be hurried by Satan’s evil plans. The demons called Jesus “Son of God” or “the Holy One of God” because they knew He was the Christ.

Luke 8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. (KJV) "Art Thou come to torment us before the time?" (Mark 1:24). This evil tormentor anticipates, dreads, and begs exemption from torment to him! In Christ Jesus the evil spirits know their destined Tormentor.

James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. (KJV) That there is one God . . . Unless your faith goes farther than to agree to this Truth known by demons, that there is one God . . . you are in the same boat with the evil spirits. Lip service (professors, hypocrites) is not the evidence of saving faith (possessors of Christ). Even demons believe. True believing is a work of the whole heart. A truly saved person trusts God and OBEYS God!
