Jeremiah, Chapter 10

The TRUE God Contrasted with Idols
The Stupidity of Idolatry

This chapter was written shortly before the Babylonian capture of Jerusalem the first time. At that time the Jews were completely idolatrous. The horrible idolatries under Manasseh were still revered and secretly worshipped by the Jews; and the shallow
reforms under Josiah had not really changed the hearts of the people. Idolatry was rampant in Judaea in the closing days of their apostasy and just before their deportation to Babylon. Any idea that the warning here regarding the nothingness of idols was not needed, is simply ridiculous. The truth is that the Jews desperately needed this warning; and since this chapter mentions the near approach of the Babylonian invasion, it was especially appropriate that Jeremiah should have given the Jews another dramatic warning of the idolatry which they were sure to encounter in Babylon, as well as referring again to their own idolatry which was a major cause of their punishment from God.

The messages between Jeremiah's description and that of Isaiah, is so clear that no one can doubt that one is modeled after the other. If Jeremiah took the thoughts and sayings from Isaiah (which he clearly did), it is plain that the last twenty-seven chapters of Isaiah had to be before the times of Jeremiah, and that they were not written at the close of the Babylonian exile.

The Jews, about to be carried into captivity, are here warned against the superstition and idolatry of that country to which they were going. Chaldea was addicted to astrology, and so the prophet begins with warning them against it (Jer.10:1-2). He then exposes the stupidity of idolatry in a short but stylish sarcasm; in the midst of which he turns, to the one TRUE God, whose wonderful qualities lead him to contrast the LORD’S infinite perfections with those appalling absurdities of the idols.

In this chapter we see that the people were substituting something for God. People in all the ages have always had substitutes for God. Anyone who is not worshiping the TRUE and LIVING God has some substitute for Him, be it money, fame, pleasure, power, some person, etc. Some worship money and are willing to do anything to become rich, others worship fame and will sell their honor in order to obtain some unworthy goal. There are SO many substitutes for God, and Jeremiah will talk about this, warning the people then, and us today!

Jeremiah Cautions Not to Learn the Way of Heathens (Jer.10:1-2)

Jer. 10:1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: (KJV)

O house of Israel . . . the ones addressed here were of the kingdom of Judah, called house of Israel because that was all the whole house of Israel that was left. The 10 tribe kingdom had been destroyed more than 93 years before this; and since the kingdom of Judah was made up of many from all 13 tribes, it was rightfully called the house of Israel.

Jer. 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. (KJV)

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen . . . the reference is to the Chaldeans, famed as astrologers, and the Jews were likely to fall into the same superstition. The way . . . their teachings or laws (Lev.18:3; Acts 9:2).
And be not dismayed at the signs of heaven . . . signs of heaven were strange appearances, such as eclipses or comets, and they were taken by the heathen as indications of calamities on earth. Do not try to read the future in the stars.
For the heathen are dismayed at them . . . do not be afraid of the signs of heaven, even though other nations are terrified by them.

Astrology and Idolatry Are Foolishness (Jer. 10:3-5)

Jer. 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. (KJV)

The customs of the people are vain . . . the idolatrous customs and ceremonies that many people follow, they are vain. It is a foolish and evil thing that any who profess to be true to God should pay heed to such lying vanities.
One cutteth a tree out of the forest . . . here he extend their idolatry to their astrology.
The work of the hands of the workman, with the axe . . . they cut down trees to make vain idols and representations of these stars and planets, and then they fear and worship them as gods . . . a superstition that the stars which they worshipped did by some magic, convey some virtue or spirit into these worthless statues. These ‘gods’ are just a piece of wood, out of a tree, cut out of the forest, yet they are afraid of them, as if they were gods (Isa. 40:20; Jer.8:2).

Jer. 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. (KJV)

They deck it with silver and with gold . . . they cover it with silver and gold, and then
They fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not . . . fastened it with nails so that it would not fall over when they set it up. This making of an idol is the same as Isaiah describes (Isa.41:7; 44:13-17) where it is plain that they made gods out of the trunks of trees. Christmas trees are not described here, but God does NOT want His children to learn the way of the heathen (Jer.10:2).

Jer. 10:5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. (KJV)

They are upright as the palm tree . . . they resemble a palm tree . . . the comparison between the idol and the palm is in the pillar-like uprightness of the palm tree, having no branches except at the top.
But speak not . . . they cannot speak (Ps.115:5).
They must needs be borne, because they cannot go . . . cannot walk, they must be carried (Ps.115:7; Isa.46:1, 7).
Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil . . . idols cannot cause you harm, do not fear them.
Neither also is it in them to do good . . . neither can they do any good to you whatsoever (1 Sam.12:21; Isa.46:7; Jer.16:19; Hab.2:18-20).

There Is NONE like Him (Jer.10:6-7)

Jer. 10:6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. (KJV)

Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD . . . forasmuch refers to what goes before, showing there is NO comparison between God and idols.
Thou art great, and thy name is great in might . . . God’s Name is exceedingly great, and boundless in power. Even though idols may have, to some degree, a name in the world among the heathen, there was absolutely nothing that could be seen of their power. The devil may act in some way, through them to delude the world, but nothing can be compared with the power that has manifested itself in God's works (Ps.106:8; 111:6). All the works of idols are either none, feeble, shaky and/or weak (Jer.10:8).

Jer. 10:7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee. (KJV)

Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? . . . the LORD is called a Great King (Ps.47:2; 48:2; 95:3; Zec.14:9; Mal. 1:14; 1 Tim.6:15). The True and Living God governs all nations, He and He alone, and by none else. Who but a fool would worship any but this King, or be afraid of any except Him? Who can be so stupid as not to acknowledge this ONE Supreme Being?
For to thee doth it appertain . . . for to the Almighty LORD, and Him alone does this relate.
Forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations . . . among all the wise men of the nations, there is NONE like the LORD.
And in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee . . . and in all their kingdoms, there is NONE like the LORD! The search for a wiser man or greater ruler could not bring up a single one among all the greatest men and rulers, in their kingdoms; than this Great King!
NONE can possibly compare with God, either for wisdom or power . . . for their wisest men are but fools alongside of Almighty God!

Worshippers of Idols Brutish (Jer.10:8-9)

Jer. 10:8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities. (KJV)

But they are altogether brutish and foolish . . . the admiration that idols impress upon men's carnal minds, keeps them hovering between hope and fear. Because of this, they become as frightened and stupid of any TRUE worship of God, as beasts. They are become stupid idolaters, and have accepted the grossest superstitions of the Gentiles (Rom.1:18-25).
The stock is a doctrine of vanities . . . the stock is put for all kinds of idols, of whatever materials, to render them contemptible, either as deluding the ignorant, and that they are mere vain, foolish, helpless things. A doctrine of vanities . . . bad instruction (Pro.16:22). It is easy to prove them fools and brutish, when they see a stock, a piece of wood, to be their god.

Jer. 10:9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. (KJV)

Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish . . . it was covered with plates of silver or gold (Ex.39:3). From Tarshish . . . Tarshish is the name of a sea-town in Cilicia (Eze. 27:12, 25; Jonah 1:3); and being a noted port, from where they had passage to Africa, India, and other far-off countries. It is well-known that the best silver came from there, and also of gold coming from there (1 Ki.10:22; 2 Chron.9:21), however where the most proper commodities of it are mentioned, we read of no gold (Eze.27:12).
And gold from Uphaz . . . probably the best gold came from Uphaz in those days, as the best silver came from Tarshish, and that here was the best gold is probable from (Dan. 10:5).
The work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder . . . the craftsmen take it, and each, according to his art, shapes and adorns it; fits the silver and the gold on it.
Blue and purple is their clothing . . . some differ about the materials out of which they were dyed, and also differ in the colors, which here are called blue and purple. Blue and purple is their clothing . . . these were the most precious dyes; very rare, and very high priced.
They are all the work of cunning men . . . the most worthy men in their individual arts were picked out for this work, that there might be nothing wanting as to accuracy and richness, all of this the prophet speaks with utter ridicule about their idols, as if any of  this would put power, virtue, or excellency in them
.

The True God Governs the World (Je.10:10-13)

Jer. 10:10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. (KJV)

But the LORD is the true God . . . all these idols are false gods. Only God alone is the TRUE God; idols are nothing but lies, and the teachers of lies. God is Truth itself, and that both in regard of His essence, as it is ascribed to Christ (1 Jn.5:20); and also in respect of His faithfulness (Num.23:19; Ps.31:5). John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)
He is the living God . . . these idols are all just dead trees and stones, Only God alone is the only LIVING God, having life in Himself, and giving life to all things (Jn.5:21, 26). Hence these idols are not only more base than any other creature, but even more vile than the matter itself of which they are made.
And an everlasting King . . . these idols, although were thought to be kings, and approved by kings, yet both the people and their kings shall all perish . . . for time devours them all with worm or rust, but none of these or anything else can affect the TRUE God, because He is the everlasting King!
At his wrath the earth shall tremble . . . the LORD can with His look or frown make the foundations of Heaven and the Earth to shake, while these idols can move them no more than they can move themselves, which is not one inch from their stations. Earth shall tremble: (Ps.18:7; 114:7; Joel 2:10; Nah.1:5; Mat.27:51; Rev.6:12; 20:11)
The nations shall not be able to abide his indignation . . . no one able to stop God’s wrath, nor to bear it, but shall stoop and fall under it (Ps.76:7; 90:11; Nah.1:6; Rev.6:16-17). The wicked will not be able to stand in judgment (Ps.1:5-6; Mat.13:49; 25:32, 41, 46).
Jer. 10:11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. (KJV)

Thus shall ye say unto them . . . this is the message Jeremiah was to bring to the Chaldean idolaters.
The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth . . . let him that says that he is a god, make another world (Ps 96:5). NO idol could make a world as God had done! Jeremiah is making fun of them, ridiculing them!
Even they shall perish from the earth . . . shall perish (Isa.2:18; Zec.13:2). This shows how frail they are, they shall perish . . . and how weak they are, they could never make the Heavens or the Earth.
And from under these heavens . . . it is an insult upon their idols.

In this and the next verse the prophet numbers some facts where the LORD is superior above all creatures which He has made, much more above idols, which are simply the works of man's hands.

Jer. 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. (KJV)

He hath made the earth by his power . . . the earth (Acts 14:15), the whole Earth, consisting of waters as well as earth. By His power . . . it speaks of God’s almighty power and wisdom to create such an infinite body. HOW could idols have found materials to have made up such a body and bulk? They could NOT!!! But . . . the TRUE God was NOT at a loss, nor will He ever be, He drew them out of nothing, and commanded them into a being by the Word of His power (Gen.1:1-2; Neh.9:6; Ps.33:6; 136:5-9; 146:6; Isa.66:1-2; Col.1:15-16; Heb.1:3).            Have you ever thought about this?
He hath established the world by his wisdom . . . He has made it firm, solid and unmovable.
And hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion . . . Things that entered into the Creator's preparing a home for His human creation are: (1). He made the Earth; (2). He arranged and equipped it to be a human dwelling place; and (3). He protects it from celestial damage such as excessive radiation and falling meteorites, by stretching out the heavens (the special shield) as a protection. See Special comments at the end of this chapter for God’s wisdom.

Jer. 10:13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. (KJV)

When he uttereth his voice . . . as in verse 12, Jeremiah clearly states God's unlimited power and wisdom in His Creation and His arranging the specified order of things.
There is a multitude of waters in the heavens . . . a multitude of waters was at God’s command. This is a clear reference to a storm of thunder and lightning, and the abundance of rain which is the result. When He thunders in the heavens (Job 37:4-5; Ps. 77:18), some times it rains when it does not thunder, and too it thunders when it does not rain . . . but when it both rains and thunders, the rain usually falls with more force from the clouds, and is more plentiful.
And he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth . . . the lowest heaven, the region of the air. The vapours . . . rising mist; any substance in the gaseous state, the condition of which is normally that of a liquid such as fog.
He maketh lightnings with rain . . . God creates lightning with rain: even though fire and water are opposite, yet it opens the clouds to make way for the rain.
And bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures . . . this notes that it is secret and hidden, for no man knows from where the wind comes, or where they go (Jn.3:8). It is surprising to see how suddenly in a calm time, that the winds rise and whirl about, how they change and are conflicting in their motions. The winds can be forceful and persist, meaning also they are His treasures . . . plenty of snow and hail being thus expressed (Job 38:22); and that it is at God’s command and will to bring out of His treasure when He pleases and what He pleases. Psalm 135:7 He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries. (KJV)

They are the Creatures of a Delusions (Jer.10:14-15)

Jer. 10:14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. (KJV)

Every man is brutish in his knowledge . . . some limit this to the makers of these idols, that can use their arts and brains to no better purpose than to build such idols into gods.  Men are captivated and obsessed by these vain things, for they cannot see their stupidity, they act as though they were animals. It is for lack of knowledge and understanding that men are so brutish (Isa.44:18).
Every founder is confounded by the graven image . . .  every creator of idols is confused by that idol. He cannot see his stupidity, and is not ashamed of it.
For his molten image is falsehood . . . that vain idol is not what it pretends to be, but is a deceitful thing, a lie; and they turn the Truth of God into a lie (Rom.1:25).
There is no breath in them . . . idols have NO life in them. That vegetative life that once was in their stocks (trees) is now gone, and they certainly do not have spirits sent down from heaven.

Jer. 10:15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. (KJV)

They are vanity, and the work of errors . . . as springing from men’s corrupt minds, they are teachers and encouragers of lies (Hab.2:18). They should be scoffed at and ridiculed, NOT adored and worshipped! They . . . stated in the plural number, to note the amount of them.
In the time of their visitation they shall perish . . . when God has a controversy with them, He shall reckon with Babylon and her idols, they and their worshippers shall be destroyed, possibly referring to the manner of the pagan conquests, who were inclined to carry away both persons and the idols of the country, and either break them to pieces, or burn them (Isa.46:1). This may be spoken by Jeremiah as a way of encouragement to the Jews, which took offence to the Chaldean idols that were set up in their sight; that God may strengthen their patience. God tells them He visits them in mercy, and their enemies in judgment; He will destroy those idols. Time of their visitation (Jer.8:12; 46:21; 50:27).

They Are Told to Expect Distress (Jer.10:16-18)

Jer. 10:16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name. (KJV)

The portion of Jacob is not like them . . . The portion of Jacob; a periphrasis for the true God, who promised to be the portion of His people and to be so called (Deu.32:9; Ps. 16:5), and many other places . . . because God is in covenant with His people in the Messiah, whose co-heirs are as dear to Him as a portion is that descends to a man by inheritance; and He tells you his name in the close of the verse . . . one who has the whole host of Heaven and Earth at His disposal.
For he is the former of all things . . . God is the Maker of all things; idols are things framed and formed, but God is the Creator of all things, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.
Israel is the rod of his inheritance . . . so called, because the portions and inheritances of Israel were measured by a line, reed, or rod, and so is called the rod of his inheritance (Deut.32:9; Ps.74:2), and because they belonged to God by a continual line of succession . . . Israel is the rod or scepter of God’s inheritance, because God set up His Kingdom in Israel.
The LORD of hosts is his name . . . (Isa.47:4; 48:2; 51:15; 54:5; Jer.10:16; 31:35; 32:18; 48:15; 50:34; 51:19).

The prophet now enters another subject, beginning another sermon.

Jer. 10:17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress. (KJV)

Gather up thy wares out of the land . . . wares, their movable goods (Eze.12:3). Prepare to migrate as captives to Babylon. The address is to Jerusalem, as representative of all the people. It seems to be a sarcasm, a kind of military ridicule.
O inhabitant of the fortress . . . I think this is directed to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that being the main place of security in Judea, as opposed to all other places that they promised themselves security in, for the approaching destruction was to pass through the entire country.

Jer. 10:18 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so. (KJV)

For thus saith the LORD . . . this phrase is found in 15 Verses in Isaiah, and in 49 Verses in Jeremiah.
Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once . . . I will sling out, states with how much violence, speed and ease the Chaldeans shall hurry the people into Babylon. Sling . . . as the stone quickly and violently passes which is thrown from a sling. God will not delay, but make one complete, quick work of it; noting not only the time, but implying the clear riddance that He would make of them (2 Chron.36:17-19). They had been often assaulted by enemies, and sometimes they redeemed themselves, sometimes were delivered by God, but it would not be so now, for all would be swept away. Similar image occur in: (Jer.16:13; 1 Sam.25:29; Isa.22:17-18).
And will distress them, that they may find it so . . . they shall see that God is serious, that He has not only said it, but they shall find that God will do it! Although they refused to believe His warnings, now they shall actually feel the Truth of God’s threats (Jer.5:12-13; Eze.6:10).

This Calamity the Prophet Laments (Jer. 10:19-25)

Jer. 10:19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it. (KJV)

Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous . . . Jeremiah does not so much express his own sorrow, although it is great, but he copies the sorrow and complaint of the land (Jer.9:10), and the people of the land have, or at least should have . . . which because they do not, causes great grief in the prophet himself. He cannot help but be affected with their condition, which he calls not only a hurt, but a wound, and both of them very serious.
But I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it . . . the prophet must bear the grief, oppressive as it is, they deserved it, and worse . . . but even in the worst judgment, the LORD God always remembers mercy.

Jer. 10:20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains. (KJV)

My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken . . . God’s Tabernacle is ruined, the city is taken, and their villages ruined and desolated (Jer.4:20). Cords . . . with which the coverings of the tent are extended. This symbolizes Jerusalem in general and/or the Temple in particular.
My children are gone forth of me . . . the inhabitants of the land, or the lesser cities, being often called daughters. The Chaldeans have snatched them away, and carried them into captivity.
They are not . . . they are gone.
There is none to stretch forth my tent any more . . . symbol from the tents of nomadic life; as these are taken down in a short time, so as not to leave a trace of them, so Judea (Jer. 4:20).
And to set up my curtains . . . none to set up My curtains, none to do God’s service. Jerusalem has none to guide her of all her sons (Isa.51:18).

Jer. 10:21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered. (KJV)

For the pastors are become brutish . . . the prophet does not take all blame off the people, but he lays it chiefly on the rulers of church and state, for pastor is taken often (Jer.23:1-3).
And have not sought the LORD . . . did not seek the LORD, nor did they take Him into their counsels.
Therefore they shall not prosper . . . the prophet gives the reason why nothing went well with them, namely, because they had no respect for God, without which they cannot expect a blessing.
All their flocks shall be scattered . . . all that have been committed to their care shall be carried unto Babylon, and several of them dispersed abroad into several countries for their sakes.

Jer. 10:22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons. (KJV)

Behold, the noise of the bruit is come . . . the prophet had several times sounded this same alarm in their ears, but it had done no good. Jeremiah’s words seemed like idle stories, they simply did not believe him.
And a great commotion out of the north country . . . he spoke as one imagining what dreadful commotions and concussions would be upon the land by the clattering of armies, the prancing and whinnying of horses (Jer.8:16), sounding of trumpets, and rattling of chariots, making it seem as it were the Earth as shaking, when that vast army of the Chaldeans would furiously break in upon them. The north country: (Jer.1:14; 5:15).
To make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons . . . to make the cities of Judea a desolation, a habitation of wild beasts because of the invasion of Judea by King Nebuchadnezzar is confirmed. He has entered the land; the Chaldeans are at the door, and the total desolation of Judea is their sole object. A den of dragons (Jer.9:11).

Jer. 10:23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (KJV)

O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself . . . Jeremiah finds no matter what he says, nothing could change the minds of these people, for they instead grew worse. The way of man not in himself (Pro.16:1; 20:24; Jam.4:13-14). Hopeless of persuading the people, the prophet turns to God. He knew that the march of Nebuchadnezzar against him (Jeremiah identifies himself with his people) was not at the king’s own decision, but was commanded by the LORD (Isa.10:5-7; Jer.10:19).
It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps . . .when man walks, and sets out in any task, he turns himself over to God (Ps.16:8; 73:23; Isa.41:10,13; 42:1). These words seem to be the words of the prophet, referring to himself and other holy men of God . . . and it also refers to the wicked. The LORD can and does use anyone that He chooses (righteous or wicked), either to bring blessings or to bring judgment on sinners. He chose King Nebuchadnezzar to bring judgment to Israel because of their continuous idolatry. The king did as God commanded him, no more, no less. God is always in control!

Jer. 10:24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. (KJV)

O LORD, correct me . . . seeing thou wilt bring the Chaldeans upon us to punish us for our sins, let it be a correction only, not a total destruction and utter ruin.
But with judgment . . . let it be in measure, rationed in judgment, done in Your wisdom, as a father toward His children (Jer.30:1, 18). We do not refuse correction, but we cast ourselves upon Thee, and for that reason, in the midst of Your judgment, please remember mercy.
Not in thine anger . . . lest thou should release Your fury.
Lest thou bring me to nothing . . . let not Your punishment be the worst for our offense; for we would be brought to nothing . . . totally and irrecoverably ruined.

Jer. 10:25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate. (KJV)

Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not . . . this may imply that God would do so, for what the LORD predicts, that is exactly what He shall do!
And upon the families that call not on thy name . . . God first sent the king of Babylon to overthrow several heathen nations, and then Babylon itself was destroyed with a great destruction. The LORD will make a difference between us and the heathen (such as know thee not), those that do not acknowledge and own the LORD for their God (1 Sam.2:12; Job 18:21; 2 Thes.1:8).
For they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him . . . they have devoured the people of Israel; they have devoured and consumed them, making the land a desolate wilderness (Jer.9:2, 10, 12, 26). Devoured him (Jer.8:16).
And have made his habitation desolate . . . (Jer.9:11). The reason why God should do so (Ps.79:5-7). After the city was destroyed, the prophet was carried into Egypt (Jer.43).

The Power of God, Saints stand firm.
John 11:25-26 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (KJV)

Gal. 3:25-29 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise
. (KJV)

The Power of God, Applied in behalf of saints:
Ex. 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? (KJV)
2 Chron. 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars. (KJV)
Ps. 34:15-19 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. 16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. (KJV)

The Power of God, is Incomparable:
John 16:13-15 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (KJV)
Ezekiel 36:26-27 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27  And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. (KJV)
Romans 8:9-14 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (KJV)

(KJV)
Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, (KJV)
