Introduction
Psalm 89 is the majestic Covenant Psalm, which, according to the Jews, closes the third book of the Psalms. It is the words of a believer, in the presence of a great national disaster, pleading with GOD, urging the grand argument of covenant actions, and expecting deliverance and help, because of the faithfulness of Almighty GOD. This is most fitly called a Maschil, for it is most instructive. No subject is more important or is so fully the key to all theology as that of the Covenant. He who is taught by the HOLY SPIRIT to understand the Covenant of grace will be well instructed in the things of the Kingdom of GOD.
The author starts by affirming his belief in the faithfulness of the LORD to His Covenant with the house of David, and makes his first pause at 89:4. He then praises and magnifies the Name of the LORD for His power, justice and mercy (89:5-14). He then sings of the happiness of the people who have such a GOD to be their glory and defense (89:15-18). He reviews the terms if the Covenant at full length with delight (89:19-37), and then sadly pours out His complaint and petition (89:38-51), closing the Psalm with a hearty approval and doxology, and a double Amen. May the HOLY SPIRIT greatly bless us all as we read this priceless Psalm of instruction.
Psalm 89 wrestles with two truths that seem to oppose each other . . . that of a triumphant King whose throne will last forever, and that of a humiliated Servant who is rejected and overcome by His enemies. Psalm 89 is immediately a doxology because of GOD’S Promises of an everlasting Davidic throne, and an expression of grief because of the fact that the throne of David has evidently been overcome by enemies. A doxology is a song or prayer of praise to Almighty GOD.
Both Suffering Servant and Victorious King is the Messianic fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant in the Person of CHRIST JESUS. The Jews saw BOTH figures clearly in the Old Testament, but really struggled to put them together.
The Covenant Promises of GOD all through the Old Testament, including the for ever assurances of GOD to David, involved much more than just the individual with whom the Covenant was made. GOD made covenants with Adam (Gen.2:16-17), Noah (Gen.9:8-17), Abraham (Gen.12:1-3; 17:1-22), Moses (Ex.20:1-24-24:8); and with David (2 Sam.7:12-16; 1 Chron.17:11-14) . . . all these covenants were the basis of a Promise from GOD . . . not just to these men alone . . . but to ALL who were represented by or related to them. I think that it is for this reason that the psalmist describes this Covenant in Psalm 89, even though he is plainly writing generations after GOD spoke to David. GOD had promised David that an heir of his would sit on the throne forever, and that in that Kingdom, GOD would establish His people in their own land (2 Sam.7:10). The Davidic reign was to be accompanied by rest from all enemies (2 Sam.7:11). So, GOD'S Covenant with David, had wide-reaching suggestions for all of GOD'S people, not just for the KING Himself. So, the confidence of GOD'S people in GOD'S word to David, was really concrete and vital to their daily life.
The faithfulness of GOD is of utmost importance to the people of GOD. It is the ground of their confidence, the foundation of their hope and the cause of their rejoicing. It saves them from the despair to which their own unfaithfulness might easily lead, gives them courage to carry on in spite of their failures.
Psalm 89 tells of GOD'S Covenant with David, with all its accompanying blessings to and through the Davidic KING to come . . . as a WAY to remind GOD'S people of these guaranteed and certain Promises.
The struggle to put Servant and King together is the challenge that gives rise to the lament that is in Psalm 89. The disappointment and complaint expressed in the third and final section of Psalm 89 is so moving, and marks such a contrast with the confident praise and describing of Promises in the former portions of the Psalm, that has led many Bible students to think that this Psalm must consist of at least two other Psalms that were put together later.
The Davidic Covenant, inaugurated in 2 Samuel 7 and explained further in Psalm 89, is fulfilled in the Person and work of CHRIST JESUS. The Messianic nature of the Davidic Promises was expressed even in the Old Testament. And the New Testament makes it quite clear what is predicted in the Old Testament. The Promise of a special Son-ship expressed in the Davidic Covenant is specifically applied to CHRIST JESUS: Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? (KJV)
Among conservative theologians, the opinion is unanimous that CHRIST fulfills the Davidic Covenant. The evidence is clear from BOTH the Old Testament and the New Testament. For anyone accepting the authenticity and inspiration of the Scriptures, the testimony of the angel to Mary is conclusive (Lk 1:31-33). The Promise of David's throne, David's Kingdom, and all that is involved is transferred by this prophecy to CHRIST JESUS, the Son of David (Mt. 1:1). The line that began with David shall have its consummation and eternal fulfillment in CHRIST.
Psalm 89 is an exposition of the Davidic Covenant, and plainly prophesies concerning the Coming CHRIST. Yet this prophecy, as we have seen, includes features of both a victorious KING and of a Suffering Servant of GOD. Even though Psalm 89 is one of the clearest Old Testament struggles to understand how GOD'S Promises to David could be fulfilled in ONE single Person, who is BOTH conquering KING and Suffering Servant, the Psalm is not alone in struggling with this reality. Isaiah Chapters 52 and 53 remarkably portrays the servant of GOD who will on one hand be exalted and made very high . . . yet who is also on the other hand described as despised, rejected and even killed. Both images . . . of a triumphant Davidic KING, and of a rejected and Suffering Servant, were clearly MESSIANIC prophecies, but GOD'S people desperately struggled to understand how both could be fulfilled in ONE Person . . . even though both had been clearly taught all along.
JESUS' Messianic role as both suffering servant and victorious king is vitally important to understanding His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and definitely of Davidic Covenant Promises. While Jesus' own disciples were disappointed to discover that as the MESSIAH, He would not be delivering Israel from Roman oppression, JESUS Himself insisted that it was necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory (Luke 24:26), and then went on to show that the Suffering Servant was as much a part of Old Testament Messianic prophecy as was the conquering Davidic King (Rev.20).
GOD'S Mercy and Truth, and His Covenant (89:1-4)
Although what we expect from life may disappoint us, GOD'S Promises are firmly set in the Heavens, but His eternal counsels are out of the reach of those who deny and oppose CHRIST JESUS! Dear one, only faith in the boundless mercy and everlasting Truth of GOD, can bring comfort even in the deepest trials.
Psalm 89:1 I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. (KJV)
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever . . . the mercies of the LORD are both temporal and spiritual, but especially spiritual, because in them there is an enormous display of the rich and abundant mercy of GOD! How amazingly GOOD our GOD is! For ever . . . all day long, every day, for as long as he lives, and for all eternity.
With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations . . . GOD is faithful to Himself, to all the perfections of His nature, to His truth, His holiness and His justice. He CANNOT and will NOT deny Himself . . . He is so to His SON, to all actions with Him, to all His Promises to Him; to all His counsels, purposes and decrees . . . all which are faithfully and truly performed. GOD is also faithful to His Covenant and Promises made to His people through CHRIST. http://hisservants.org/father_son_covenants_h_s.htm
Psalm 89:2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens. (KJV)
For I have said . . . I have been assured in my own mind.
Mercy shall be built up for ever . . . the mercy referred to, is the mercy expressed in the Promise made to David. The idea is, that the Promise would be fully carried out or established. It would not be like the foundation of a building, which after being laid, was abandoned . . . it would be as if the building, for which the foundation was designed, was built up and completed. It would not be a forsaken, half-finished structure, but a structure totally finished.
Thy faithfuless shalt thou establish . . . means the Promise made to David, so the sense may be . . . GOD sits in the Heavens, and there He had made this everlasting and unchangeable decree and Covenant concerning David and his house, and from there, He sees and orders all the affairs of this lower world, and therefore there is NO doubt that He shall accomplish His own Word.
In the very heavens . . . are the Heavens themselves, as long as the sun endureth (Ps.72:5), GOD shall establish His faithfulness in them. The sun in its consistent rising; the stars in their certain course; the constellations are the same from age to age, the Heavens are the symbol of the stability and security of the Promises of GOD (Jer.31:35-37; 33:20-21).
*****That this glorious perfection of GOD might be made known to the saints in all following generations, and be taken notice of by them, the psalmist spoke and sung this Psalm with his mouth, and penned it with his hand . . . in which there is more mention made of the faithfulness of GOD than perhaps in any other Passage of Scripture. Many Psalms that begin with complaint ends with prayer of joy and praise, but this begins with joy and praise and ends with sad complaints and petitions.
Psalm 89:3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, (KJV)
I have made a covenant with my chosen . . . not with Abraham, but with David, not David, literally, although he was chosen of the LORD to be His servant, and a Covenant was made with him, and a Promise made to him of the permanence of his throne and kingdom in his family (Ps.78:70), but spiritual David, the MESSIAH, David's Son and antitype; after on this account, called David in Scripture (Eze.34:23) and who is the LORD'S chosen One, Who was foreordained to be the REDEEMER of lost sinners, chosen to be the MEDIATOR between GOD and them, to be the Head of the church, and SAVIOUR of the body; and His human nature was chosen to the grace of union to the SON of GOD (Ps.89:19), therefore He is called GOD'S elect (Isa.42:1) and with Him the Covenant of grace was made from all eternity, and all the blessings and promises of it were put into His Holy Hands. He is the MEDIATOR, Surety, and Messenger of it, and by His precious Blood (1 Pet.1:19), it is ratified and confirmed. The Covenant of grace is made with all the elect, those considered to be in Christ, and is made with them as believers, converted persons, election is the foundation of the covenant, and the source of all covenant blessings.
I have sworn unto David my servant . . . to the MESSIAH, called David, who is the LORD'S Servant, as Man and MEDIATOR, of His choosing, calling, sending, and supporting (Isa.42:1), to Whom He swore, and He will not repent; and which oath of His, joined to His Covenant and Promise, gives strong comfort for the heirs of promise (Ps.89:35), the sum and substance of which covenant and oath follow. The promise is found in (2 Sam.7:11-16).
*****Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (KJV) . . . What a verse this is! It clearly tells us IF we are a TRUE child of GOD or not! IF you are “in CHRIST” you are NOT controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the HOLY SPIRIT, for you have the SPIRIT of GOD living IN you. And once you are presented with the HOLY SPIRIT, you have Him for ever! John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (KJV) . . . 2 John 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. (KJV) . . . GOD would NOT give us His SPIRIT, IF we were not sincere about our faith in JESUS! And once we receive the SPIRIT, GOD will NOT take Him away. This is only one reason that I believe in OSAS! Once saved, always saved! . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/OSAS_1_eternal_security_h_s.htm
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his . . . Anyone who does not have the SPIRIT of CHRIST living within them, are NOT Christians, they are NOT GOD’S children!
Psalm 89:4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. (KJV)
Thy seed will I establish for ever . . . not the natural seed of David, but the spiritual seed, meaning the Man, CHRIST JESUS (Lk.1:27-35), to whom it was promised that He would have a seed, and should see and enjoy it, and which would endure for ever (Ps.89:29).
And build up thy throne to all generations . . . this shows that the Passage is NOT to be understood literally of David, and his temporal throne and kingdom, which did not last too many generations; but of the spiritual throne and kingdom of the MESSIAH, who sprung from David, called the throne of his father David, whose throne is for ever and ever, and whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom (Ps.45:6; Lk.1:32), His throne is in the Heavens, where He will reign until all enemies are put under His feet (Ps.8:6; 1 Cor.15:25). Dear one, this Kingdom is also in the heart of His church, and in the hearts of His people, where He reigns as King of saints. CHRIST JESUS is on the same throne with His beloved FATHER; it is the same as His as to glory, power and authority . . . and on this throne that He shall sit, and judge the world in the latter day (Rev.20:11-15). And on this throne He will reign with His people for a thousand years (Rev.20:4-6), in the New Jerusalem state, and after the thousand years, for all eternity (Rev.3:21).
Selah . . . Selah is a word used 74 times in the King James Bible . . . 71 times in the Psalms and 3 times in Habakkuk. Different interpretations are given: possibly a musical mark or instruction on the reading of the text, maybe something like stop, look and listen; or it could be . . . it is so for it cannot be anything else; because the LORD hath sworn that He shall have an everlasting Kingdom. It seems to this humble servant, that selah is similar to amen in many ways.
*****David and his family are long since gone; none of his race has sat on the Jewish throne for over two thousand years: but CHRIST has reigned ALWAYS since that time, and shall reign until ALL His enemies are put under his feet (Ps.8:6; 110:1; Dan.7:14; Mat.28:18; Lk.1:32-33; 1 Cor.15:25-27; Eph.1:22; Heb.1:2; 2:8; 1 Pet.3:22), and to this the psalmist says Selah.
The Magnificent Glory and Absolute Perfection of
Almighty GOD (89:5-14)
The more GOD'S works are really known, the more they are admired. To praise the LORD, is to acknowledge Him and know that there is NONE other like Him anywhere! To praise the LORD is to offer a deep heart-felt sacrifice of praise (Heb.13:15), as we feel and express our respect and earnest, sincere reverence when we worship GOD. But sad to say, this happens far too little in our congregations. The Almighty power of GOD which smote Egypt, can scatter the enemies of the church, IF all who trust in GOD'S mercy will rejoice in His Holy Name and praise Him! Dear one, mercy and truth directs everything that GOD does . . . His counsels have been from eternity past, and their end results to future eternity . . . for everything that He does is justice and judgment. We all should humble ourselves before His throne of grace and praise Him because of this! Have YOU thanked Him and praised Him for all that He has done for you? If not, why not?
Psalm 89:5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. (KJV)
And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD . . . which may be understood literally of the Heavens, in the same way as other inanimate creatures praise the LORD (Ps.148:3-5), or
the inhabitants of Heaven (Ps.148:1-2) shall find new occasion for praise in the faithfulness evinced in carrying out the Promise to David, and in the amazing things that will occur under that Promise and in its fulfillment. Dear one, since this Promise embraces the MESSIAH and His reign, we can clearly see why the angels would find cause for praise, in the incarnation of the REDEEMER, and in all that would be accomplished by Him. Incarnation of JESUS: (Isa.7:14; Jn.1:1, 14; Mat.1:16, 20-23; Lk.1:31-35; 2:7, 11; Rom.1:3-4; 9:5; 1 Cor.15:47; Gal.4:4; Phil.2:6-8; 1 Tim.3:16; Heb.2:11, 14-17; 10:5; 1 Jn.4:2-3; 2 Jn.1:7)
Thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints . . . the congregation of the saints is interpreted of the angels, who are called saints (Deut.33:2), of which there is a massive congregation, an innumerable company (Heb.12:22), who not only admire and praise the wonderful works of the LORD, but His perfections as well; and especially His faithfulness in the executing of His Promises AND His threats (Rev.20:13-15). Angels called saints: (Deut.33:2; Ps.68:7, 17; Dan.7:0; Acts 7:53; Gal.3:19; 2 Thes.1:7; Heb.2:2; Jude 1:14; Rev.5:11). Innumerable company: (Deut.33:2; Ps.68:17; Dan.7:10; Heb.12:22; Jude 7:10; Rev.5:11-12).
*****GOD is wonderful: (1). His being wonderful is the inspiration of universal worship. Amazement, awe, respect and reverence bring us to a state of highest worship. Dear one, these could not exist if GOD were not fully understood by us. (2). His being wonderful is seen in His never changing faithfulness. How marvelous it is that He remains unchanged and permanent amidst all the changes of nature and all the periods of time. Always faithful, to Himself and to His Word, with NO veering off from His Promises, NO changes in His plans, NO changing horses in the middle of a stream. (3). His being wonderful is clear in that NONE anywhere, can ever compare to Him. None like Him: (Ex.15:11; Deut.33:26, 29; Ps.18:10; 35:10; 68:4, 33-34; 71:19; 72:18; 86:8; 89:6-8; 104:3; 126:2-3; Job 5:9; Isa.40:18, 25; Jer.10:7).
Psalm 89:6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? (KJV)
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? . . . The idea is that none in the Heavens above, none in the upper world can be compared with Almighty GOD! There is NO other god, there is NONE among the most majestic angels, great and glorious as they are, that can be compared to CHRIST JESUS!
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? . . . one version incorrectly renders this the sons of angels. This is NOT true because angels do NOT reproduce their species (Mat.22:30; Mk.12:25; Lk.20:36). Another renders this the mighty men of the Earth and their children, meaning princes, nobles, judges and civil magistrates of all kinds, men of power and authority in the world; for there are none of them that can be compared to the LORD, who is KING of kings, and LORD of lords (Rev.19:16).
*****The incomparable greatness of the One and Only True GOD: Thetrue GOD, Sovereign of Heaven and Earth, is great in His being and existence. (1). He is Eternal. (2). He is Perfect. (3). He is Sovereign, self-governing. (4). He is unchangeable. GOD was in the past, is present now, and shall be present in times to come . . . GOD is eternal Now and Always!
Incomparable in His attributes and perfections: (1). Holy. (2). Wisdom and knowledge. (3). Power. (4). Justice. (5). Patience. (6). Love. (7). Goodness. (8). Merciful. (9). Faithfulness.
Incomparable in His majestic, life-saving works. (1). Creation. (2). Foresight and wisdom. (3). Redemption and eternal salvation.
Consider the following. (1). Because GOD is so good and so great . . . He hates sin, and rebellion against GOD is a horrible sin and stupidity for anyone who tries to oppose God. (2). Since GOD is so good and so great, our love, respect, reverence, worship and obedience we owe to Him! (3). Since GOD is so good and so great, think of His humble attitude and His superiority to ever consider us, sinful creatures that we are! (4). Since GOD is so good and so great, think what it must be like, to be under His wrath for ever! (5). Since GOD is so good and so great, consider what it will be like to enjoy His love, favor and awesome Presence for ever. THANK YOU JESUS, THANK YOU!
Psalm 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him. (KJV)
God is greatly to be feared . . . NOT with a slavish fear, a fear of Hell and damnation, such as may be in devils; nor with a deceitful fear, such as is taught by the precepts of men (Mat.15:9); but with a loving, godly fear (reverence, respect), such as is characteristic to the children of GOD; with a holy and humble fear, with a reverent and respectful affection for the One and Only Almighty GOD. Dear one, our mind should be filled with earnest feelings, for this is a proper state of mind with which to come before Him. Nature teaches us that GOD should be approached with awe and reverence; and all the teachings of nature confirm this. His power is to be feared; His justice is to be feared; His holiness is to be feared; and there is also so much in His goodness, His love, His kindness, His mercy, to fill the mind with sincere emotions. http://www.lastdaysprophecy.org/L_D_bible_signs_natural_disasters.html
In the assembly of the saints . . . the assembly that is gathered for His worship. The reference here may be either to worshippers on Earth or in Heaven. Wherever and whenever, in this world or in other worlds, when creatures are engaged in the worship of GOD, there should be deep earnestness respect and reverence.
And to be had in reverence . . . in fear; in awe.
Of all them that are about him . . . them that approach Him; that come before His Presence. The mindful Presence of GOD should fill us with awe. When we feel that His Eye is upon us, when we KNOW that He sees us, we must love, honor and praise Him in a most grateful way.
Psalm 89:8 O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? (KJV)
O LORD God of hosts . . . GOD, commands the armies of Heaven; leads the stars; controls all forces, all powers. LORD of Hosts: (Ps.24:10; Isa.1:9; 6:3-5; 54:5; Hos.12:3-5; Zec.2:8-11). Lord of Hosts is found in 273 Scriptures in the King James Version. The hosts of Heaven include the sun, moon and stars, and all the heavenly hosts of angels, all the armies in Heaven, and all the inhabitants of the Earth.
Who is a strong LORD like unto thee? . . . He is Jah, or Jehovah (Ex.6:3; Ps.83:18; Isa.12:2; 26:4), and He alone is so, He is the most High in all the Earth (Ps.83:18) and there is none like Him for His great power and strength (1 Sam.10:24; 2 Ki.18:5; Job 1:8; 2:3). CHRIST JESUS has made the Heavens and the Earth (Jn.1:1-3; Eph.3:9; Col.1:16-17; Heb.1:2-3, 10-12; 3:3-4; 4:11), and upholds them in their being; and by which He has redeemed His people, plucked them out of the hands of sin and Satan, and preserves them safe to His Kingdom and glory (Job 40:9).
Or to thy faithfulness round about thee . . . there is none as faithful as the LORD, none to be trusted as He . . . neither angels nor men. Some understand this of the faithful ones that are around Him, His trusty servants the angels, who stand around Him ready to do His will; or the glorified saints that are with Him, the called, chosen and faithful (Ps.103:19). Thy faithfulness is round about thee . . . His faithfulness is always with Him, it is a part of His very nature . . . to all those round about Him, He is faithful! Wherever GOD is, and He is everywhere . . . there is faithfulness. He never changes, so people and angels can always trust Him. The psalmist then proceeds to illustrate the greatness of His power and His faithfulness in the works of Creation.
Psalm 89:9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. (KJV)
Thou rulest the raging of the sea. . . whoever has seen the sea in a bad storm, when its waves roar and thrash about, must admit that nothing but the power of GOD could control its raging.
When the waves thereof arise . . . GOD can cause the winds to create a storm, and He can also bring the raging waves to a quiet calm. Since CHRIST is the Creator of the seas, He can certainly completely control them. This may be a reference to the Passage of the Red Sea (Ex.14:21-29), and the strong wind that agitated its waves at that time; as the next verse seems to indicate. CHRIST JESUS made the Heavens and the Earth and everything in them (Jn.1:1-3; Eph.3:9; Col.1:16-17; Heb.1:2-3, 10-12; 3:3-4; 4:11)
Thou stillest them . . . at His pleasure, the waves rise no higher than He allows, and at His command they settle down to a peaceful calm. So too, in the troubles of life . . . the storms, the waves of affliction can rise only as high as GOD permits, no higher . . . and when He commands them to subside, it leaves our mind as calm as the smooth sea when no wind moves over it. Dear one, remember, GOD gives us only what we can bear. 1 Cor. 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV) And His grace is always sufficient to see us through! (2 Cor.12:9-10). http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_earthquakes_extreme_weather.htm
*****Nothing is more frightful or threatening, nor more out of the power of man to check it, than the sea in a violent storm. But . . . one thing we must remember, it can swell no higher, roll no further, thrash no harder, continue no longer, nor do any more hurt than God allows. GOD can make the waves rise up in an instant if He so desires . . . and He can also immediately hush them to sleep, making them quiet, turning that violent storm into a peaceful calm. This is an act of authority and power of the Lord JESUS CHRIST, for the winds and seas obeyed Him!
Matthew 8:24-27 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! (KJV)
Mark 4:37-41 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? (KJV)
Luke 8:22-25 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. (KJV)
Psalm 89:10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm. (KJV)
Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces . . . Egypt, the reference is to the exodus of the Hebrew people, when the LORD destroyed the power of Egypt, and particularly Pharaoh their king
who with his people were broken to bits by the plagues that were brought upon them, especially when all their firstborn were slain; and he and his army were done in at the Red Sea (Ex.14:21-29), and were seen by the Israelites on the shore, all dead men (Ex.15:1-4); and this was done very easily by the LORD.
All this may be a symbol of the LORD'S breaking in pieces the proud and insolent one Satan, as Rahab indicates; of his breaking his head (Gen.3:15), destroying his works, and spoiling his principalities and powers (Rom.8:38; Col.2:15); and definitely of His destruction of every proud and haughty sinner, that like Pharaoh says, who is the LORD, that I should obey Him? (Ex.5:2) and of every vain boaster, and self-righteous person, that trusts in his own righteousness, and will not submit to the righteousness of CHRIST (Rom.10:3); and especially mystical Egypt, the proud beast of Rome (Rev.17), the Antichrist, who sits in the Temple of GOD as if he were GOD, showing himself to be so, blaspheming GOD, His name, His tabernacle, and His saints (Rev.13); who will be broken to shivers as a potter's vessel (Ps.2:9), when the vials of GOD'S wrath are poured out (Rev.16), and at and by the Coming of CHRIST (Zec.14:1-5; Rev.19:11-21).
Thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm . . . by His power, the arm being the symbol of power (Ps.77:14-20; Deut.5:15; 7:8, 19); as the Egyptians were in the Red Sea, by the waves of it, and cast upon the shore by them; and as the Amorites were by Moses (Num.10:35), and the Canaanites by Joshua.
Psalm 89:11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. (KJV)
The heavens are thine . . . they were made by Him and inhabited by Him, they are the work of His Hands, and the seat of His splendor, and the throne of His glory. The angels of Heaven are His, His creatures and His servants; and the different Heavens are His, the airy, starry and the third Heaven; the place and state of the blessed and glorified saints is of His preparing and giving (Jn.14:1-3; 1 Pet.1:3-5). http://www.godcannotlie.org/messianic_heaven_hell.html
The earth also is thine . . . the Earth itself, was made by CHRIST, and all that the Earth produces, as having sprung out of the Earth that He has made. The entire ownership of the Universe is His!
As for the world, and the fulness thereof . . . the habitable world, and all that dwell therein, all the children of men, the beasts of the field, and cattle on a thousand hills (Ps.50:10), and the provisions for them all; which is the goodness of the LORD, the Earth is full of (Ps.24:1).
Thou hast founded them . . . the world, and the inhabitants of it; the Earth is founded upon the seas (ps.24:2), and the world upon nothing (Job 26:7); and the inhabitants are wonderfully preserved and continued by the power and wisdom of GOD.
Psalm 89:12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. (KJV)
The north and the south, thou hast created them . . . the two extreme parts of the world, the north pole and south pole, be they inhabited or uninhabited, are created by the LORD, to answer some purpose (Job 26:7). All that is in northern and the southern sky . . . the constellations and the stars; and all that there is in the Earth . . . in the regions of cold and of heat . . . as far as they extend in either direction.
Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name . . . Tabor and Hermon, Tabor was to the west and Hermon to the east side of Palestine, and both of them objects of beauty and grandeur. Tabor was a mountain in the western part of Galilee, in the tribe of Zebulun (Josh.19:12). This mountain stands by itself in the Plain of Esdraelon, it is generally thought to be the mountain where CHRIST was transfigured before His disciples (Mat.17). When He appeared in that glorious form, Moses and Elias were talking with Him, and a voice from the excellent Glory of GOD the FATHER declared Him to be His beloved SON.
https://www.bible-history.com/isbe/T/TABOR,+MOUNT/
Hermon was a mountain called by the Sidonians, Sirion, and by the Amorites, Shenir, (Deut.3:8-9) and was in the east. At the foot of Mount Hermon, is seated Nain, famous for our LORD'S raising the widow's son there (Lk.7:11-15).

*****Shall rejoice in thy name . . . the idea is, that GOD has control of ALL of the Universe; the creations of the world, in every direction, north, south, east and west, and in every part, declared His power, and made known His greatness. They rejoice in Him as their GOD. They are clothed with beauty, as if full of joy; and they acknowledge that all this comes from Him as the Great Creator Ps.65:8, 12; 96:11-12). Shouldn’t we do the same?
Psalm 89:13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. (KJV)
Thou hast a mighty arm . . . CHRIST is the mighty arm of the LORD, and so is His Gospel, which is the power of GOD unto salvation (Rom.1:16; 1 Pet.1:5), although here it may mean the Almighty power of GOD, displayed in the works of Creation and wisdom (Isa.51:9-10).
Strong is thy hand . . . the hand too, is an instrument by which we execute our plans, so GOD is so often represented a having delivered His people with a strong hand. Some say here Thy left hand, to distinguish it from His right hand, mentioned next.
And high is thy right hand . . . (Ps.118:16), when it is lifted up in a way of judgment against wicked men, and for the defense of His people, then may it be said to be exalted, for it is high enough to reach the highest and most powerful of His adversaries. Some render these two last clauses as a prayer; let thy hand be strong, and let thy right hand be lifted up.
*****The FATHER put the work of redemption into the Hand of CHRIST, and it prospered in His Hand. He never did, nor ever will do, anything that is unjust or unwise; for righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne (Ps.97:1-6). None of His dictates or decrees ever vary from the rules of fairness and wisdom, none can ever say GOD is unrighteousness or foolish.
Psalm 89:14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. (KJV)
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne . . . the throne of GOD is founded on justice and right judgment; it is this which supports it. His administration is upheld because it is good and right. Even supreme power could not permanently maintain a throne founded on injustice and wrong.
Mercy and truth shall go before thy face . . . mercy and truth appear wherever He is, because all his ways are mercy and truth (Ps.25:1, 10; 33:4), mercy in pardoning and saving sinners that come to the FATHER by CHRIST (Jn.14:6; Acts 4:12); and truth in carrying out all His purposes and promises. These make the joyful sound mentioned next.
The Happiness of Those in Communion with Him (89:15-18)
Happy are those who hear the wonderful sound of the Gospel, and obey it. Happy are those who experience its power in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives. Even though believers are nothing in themselves (Jn.15:5; Phil.4:13), yet because they are in CHRIST (Rom.3:24; 8:1-2, 9), having their all in CHRIST JESUS, they may rejoice in His Name. Only the LORD can enable us to do so. Dear one, IF you are in CHRIST you are NOT controlled by your sinful nature . . . you are controlled by the HOLY SPIRIT, for you have the SPIRIT of GOD living WITHIN you. And dear one, once you are presented with the HOLY SPIRIT, you have Him for ever!
Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Once saved, always saved! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/OSAS_1_eternal_security_h_s.htm
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his . . . anyone who does not have the SPIRIT of CHRIST living within them, are NOT Christians, NOT GOD’S children.
CHRIST JESUS is the Holy One of Israel; and only in Him can His people be more blessed than in any other blessing. The True Israel: (Gal. Ch.3); also: (Rom.1:16; 2:9-10; 3:29-30; 4:11-12; 8:14-17; 9:24; 10:12-15; 1 Cor.7:19; 12:13; Eph.3:5-19; Col.3:11).
Psalm 89:15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. (KJV)
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound . . . blessed is the people, happy is their situation (Ps.1:1), for these are set apart from those who reject the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST. The Gospel brings the love, goodness, grace and mercy of GOD the FATHER displayed in His only begotten SON (Jn.3:16). The Gospel is indeed a wonderful and joyful sound, telling us of the peace and pardon by JESUS’ precious Blood (1 Pet.1:18-19), of justification by His righteousness (Rom.5:1, 9, 18), of the atonement by His Sacrifice (Mat.20:28; 2 Cor.5:21; Eph.1:7; 1 Pet.2:24-25; 3:18), and of our complete and eternal salvation by His obedience, sufferings and death (Jn.3:15-16; Heb.9:12; 10:10) . . . these are the joyful sound of the Gospel, and a most joyful one it is to those who obey it.
They shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance . . . they shall enjoy the gracious Presence of the LORD, they shall see Him as He really is. 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (KJV) . . . Those that rejoice in CHRIST JESUS, and make GOD their greatest joy, always have sufficient joy to offset their troubles and silence their griefs, because the HOLY SPIRIT is there to make their joy full (1 Jn.1:4; 4:4).
Psalm 89:16 In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. (KJV)
In thy name shall they rejoice . . . in the Name of the LORD shall they rejoice, for only in Him shall they find happiness. In Thy Person, Thy perfections, Thy protection, Thy government, Thy favor, Thy grace. Only when we acknowledge and remember Thy Name, and Thy infinite power and goodness, which has been revealed and imparted to us, can we ever know the joyful sound of the Gospel, and walk in the light of GOD'S countenance (89:15), for His Name is He Himself, and all the perfections of His nature.
All the day . . . meaning continual. Dear one, it is our privilege, and our duty to rejoice always, for the LORD is always the same, and the happiness which is found in Him and His attributes can be found at all times, 24/7! His Promises are always the same, and His people can find happiness in them non-stop! There is no reason why GOD’S people should not be continually happy, because they have such a good GOD. Let us remember that rejoicing in CHRIST, can be interrupted by sin, temptation and turning our back on Him.
And in thy righteousness . . . in Thy righteousness, where CHRIST is inclined to hear the prayers of His people, and to save them from all their enemies. Only CHRIST can raise us from a low estate of sin and misery (Ps.136:23), to a high estate of grace and glory (Ps.84:11); from a state of condemnation and death (Jn.3:18-20, 36), to a state of justification of life (Rom.3:24; 5:1); from being beggars on a dunghill, to receiving an incorruptible inheritance (Jn.14:2-3; 1Pet.1:4). What a wonderful SAVIOUR we have! THANK YOU JESUS!
Shall they be exalted . . . the effect of the knowledge of the Gospel shall be to exalt or elevate them in moral character, in happiness, in the esteem of others, and in TRUE prosperity (1 Tim.4:8-11). 1 Tim. 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. (KJV)
Psalm 89:17 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. (KJV)
For thou art the glory of their strength . . . the strength of GOD’S people gets its beauty and honor, NOT from anything in themselves, but from the fact that it is comes from CHRIST JESUS (Jn.15:1-5; Phil.4:13). As a result, the strength conveyed from CHRIST is an honor and glory to them that it is imparted to . . . and it is by this strength by which we walk, and do all we do (Jn.15:1-5). We should therefore exercise every grace, and perform our duty to Him.
And in thy favour . . . by His lovingkindness or good pleasure, who in an acceptable time (Ps.69:13; Isa.49:8), and in GOD'S timing and good will, the Man JESUS’ prayer was heard and answered. His FATHER carried Him through His sufferings and death, raised Him from the dead, and exalted Him to His right Hand. CHRIST is at the right Hand of GOD: (Mk.14:62; 16:19; Lk.20:42; 22:69; Acts 5:31; 7:55-56; Rom.8:34; Col.3:1; Heb.1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Pet.3:22).
Our horn shall be exalted . . . horn is a symbol of power ( 1 Ki.22:11; Ps.22:21; 75:4-5; 89:24; 92:10; 132:17; Dan.7:8). This means that their power had been received from GOD, and that all which added to their exaltation and honor in the world, had been received from Him.
*****CHRIST is the glory (credit) of our strength and the Horn (power) of our salvation.
2 Sam. 22:3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. (KJV)
Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (KJV)
Luke 1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; (KJV) . . . GOD raised up the MESSIAH, His only begotten SON (Jn.3:16), to be our REDEEMER, SAVIOUR and LORD. Only CHRIST JESUS can give us strength to live a life pleasing to GOD, and one day eternal life in Heaven with Him (Jn.14:6; Acts 4:12).
Psalm 89:18 For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. (KJV)
For the LORD is our defence . . . although their enemies were all around them, the LORD was like a wall of fire to protect them (Ps.5:12; 9:9; 27:5; 62:1-12; 84:9). All that they had, and all that they relied on as a defense, belonged to GOD, or was of GOD. They had no other defense; nothing else on which they could depend. GOD'S protective shield: (Gen.15:1; Deut.33:29; 2 Sam.22:3, 36; Ps.5:12; 18:2,35; 27:14; 33:20; 59:11; 62:1-8; 84:9,11; 89:18; 91:4; Pro.30:5).
And the Holy One of Israel is our King . . . He who was to be (Isa.7:14; 9:6-7) and is of Israel according to the flesh (Mat.1; Lk.1:35; 2:11; Jn.1:14), and is Holy in His nature, His life and His office (Isa.53:9; 2 Cor.5:21; Heb.4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet.2:22; 1 Jn.3:5). CHRIST JESUS is the KING of saints that rules over them, protecting and defending them.
*****This verse tells us of the psalmist's confidence that their horn (strength) would be exalted.
The Holy One of Israel is our King . . . therefore having such a powerful Friend, they had no reason to feel hopeless of their return to their former happiness. Psalm 47:6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. 7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. 8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness. (KJV) . . . What an awesome GOD we serve! Thank YOU, Thank YOU!
GOD'S Covenant with David,
As a Type of CHRIST (89:19-37)
When the LORD anointed David with the holy oil, it was not only as a symbol of the graces and gifts he received, but also as a type of CHRIST, the King Priest, and Prophet, anointed with the HOLY GHOST without measure (Jn.3:34). After David was anointed, he was persecuted, but none gained benefit against him. All that David went through was just a faint shadow of the REDEEMER'S sufferings, deliverance, glory and authority, in whom CHRIST alone these predictions and promises were fully brought to pass. CHRIST JESUS is Almighty GOD.
http://www.godcannotlie.org/is_jesus_god.htm
CHRIST JESUS is the One and Only REDEEMER appointed for us by GOD the FATHER, He alone was able to complete the work of our salvation. Let us wisely seek these awesome blessings with the help of the witness of the HOLY SPIRIT within us (Rom.8:9). Just as the LORD corrected the descendants of David for their transgressions, so too, all His people shall be corrected for their sins. Hebrews 12:6-8 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. (KJV)
There is a rod in the Hand of GOD, it is a rod, not a sword; and it is to correct, not destroy. It is for those who are wise, and knows what He does; that are gracious and kind, and will do what is best. It is a rod which they shall never feel, unless there is need. As the sun and moon keep their place in Heaven, so too the Covenant of grace (Rom.6:14) made in CHRIST, should not be questioned.
Psalm 89:19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. (KJV)
Then thou spakest in vision . . . or in a vision. GOD had spoken by means of visions, or by communications made to His people by the prophets. This vision was especially made known to Nathan, and through him to David (2 Sam.7:4-17). The substance of what was said here is found in that Passage. In 2 Sam.7:17, it is clearly called a vision. The LORD in visions, spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets.
To thy holy one . . . the vision was addressed for the most part to David, but was made through him to the people of Israel.
And saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty . . . this mighty One is the MESSIAH, the Almighty GOD, the mighty Man, JESUS, the mighty MEDIATOR and REDEEMER; who was mighty to save to the uttermost (Heb.7:25), and was the Only One who was in every way fit for and equal to the work of a REDEEMER. GOD had so endowed Him that He would be the Protector and Defender of His people. CHRIST is/was 100% qualified for the office entrusted to Him, and in His Holy Hands the interests of the world will be safe. This was not specifically said in the vision; but this was the substance of what was said. 2 Sam.7:9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. (KJV)
I have exalted one chosen out of the people . . . the same ONE as before, the MESSIAH, GOD'S elect, His Chosen One (Isa.42:1), chosen to be the HEAD of the church, chosen to be the MEDIATOR between GOD and man, and chosen to be the SAVIOUR and REDEEMER of lost sinners; chosen to be the Foundation and Cornerstone in the spiritual building, and chosen to be the Judge of the quick and the dead (Acts 10:38-42; 2 Tim.4:1; 1 Pet.4:5). CHRIST JESUS was chosen to be exalted to the offices of Prophet, Priest and King, for which He was
anointed above his fellows (Ps.45:7; Heb.1:9) and He also, having done His work, was highly exalted at GOD’S right Hand . . . angels, principalities and powers, being subject to Him. CHRIST at the right Hand of GOD: (Mk.14:62; 16:19; Lk.20:42; 22:69; Acts 5:31; 7:55-56; Rom.8:34; Col.3:1; Heb.1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Pet.3:22).

(4). Samuel (1 Sam.3:1, 15)

(20). Cornelius (Acts 10:3, 17)
(21). Paul (Acts 16:9-10; 18:9; 2 Cor.12)
Psalm 89:20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: (KJV)
I have found David my servant . . . (Acts 13:22) not David literally; but his Son and antitype, the MESSIAH, who is sometimes called by his name (89:3), and His finding Him does not imply any ignorance of Him, nor anxious concern in seeking Him, but it is an act of the highest wisdom and richest grace, to pick and appoint, in council and covenant, His own SON to be His Servant, the MESSIAH (Isa.42:1; 43:10; 52:13; 53:11), to be the REDEEMER and SAVIOUR of sinners, and to be a ransom for them (Mat.20:28; 1 Tim.2:6).
With my holy oil have I anointed him . . . not with material oil, as David was (1 Sam.16:13), but with the HOLY GHOST, which may well be called Holy Oil, referring to the holy anointing oil under the law; the oil of gladness (Ps.45:7; Heb.1:9), with which CHRIST was anointed above his fellows, and without measure (Jn.3:34), at the time of His Conception and His Birth (Lk.1:26-33), at His Baptism (Jn.1:29-34), and when He ascended to Heaven (Acts 1:6-11), for it was so early that He is said to be anointed, and to be possessed with all fulness of grace (Eph.3:19; Col.1:19; 2:9), being invested with and installed into His office as MEDIATOR; and from this anointing He has the Name of CHRIST JESUS, the MESSIAH (Acts 10:38).
Psalm 89:21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. (KJV)
With whom my hand shall be established . . . GOD would always defend or protect Him. He would not intervene only at times, but He would be His SON’S Constant Protector. His Hand would be permanent, constant, always extended to help Him. So too, GOD is the Constant Helper of His people, that they may rely on His almighty power.
Mine arm also shall strengthen him . . . the people of GOD are really defended as if the strength of GOD was theirs. The power of GOD is always active in their defense, and it will certainly be exerted in their favor constantly. It will be more wisely employed by Him in their behalf than it would be by themselves. Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (KJV)
*****There was a Promise of GOD'S gracious Presence with CHRIST, as Man and MEDIATOR, and of a communication of grace and strength from Him, to carry Him through His sorrow and troubles; and of His supporting and upholding Him under it. The Mighty Hand of GOD’S power and grace would always be prepared and ready for Him.
Psalm 89:22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. (KJV)
The enemy shall not exact upon him . . . the enemy is the devil, as in the parable of the tares (Mat.13:39). The devil is the merciless enemy of CHRIST and His church; and yet with all his hatred and malice, he could not get more inflicted upon Him, than the law and justice of GOD required of Him, nor could he triumph over CHRIST . . . quite the opposite . . . the devil was conquered by CHRIST JESUS, and all his principalities and powers spoiled (Col.2:15). The devil could NOT deceive JESUS, the way that he deceived Eve (Gen.3:1-7), he could NOT deceive the MESSIAH, the seed of the woman (Gen.3:15) . . . he certainly tried it, in person, by his temptations in the wilderness (Mat.4; Mk.1; Lk.4), and by his agents and instruments: the Scribes (Mat.26:3, 57; 27:41; Mk.14:1; Lk.22:66), the Pharisees (Mat.12:14; 21:45-46; Lk.20:20; Jn.7:32, 44-45; 11:47, 53; 18:1-3), and the high priests (Mat.26:3; Mk.14:53; Jn.19:15) . . . but all in vain, and to no purpose; the devil could NOT succeed . . . he did NOT succeed!
Nor the son of wickedness afflict him . . . JESUS was indeed afflicted, by wicked men (1 Jn.3:8-10), and by Satan the wicked one (Mat.13:38; 1 Jn.2:13-14) . . . JESUS was afflicted but NOT as to be overcome by any of His oppressors! The Antichrist (1 Jn.2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 Jn.1:7), that man of sin (2 Thes.2:3), and son of perdition (Jn.17:17; 2 Thes.2:3), that wicked one (Mat. 13:19; 1 Jn.2:13; 3:12; 5:18) that is very much so, and may be well called the son of wickedness (Ps.89:22). Satan has long and greatly oppressed the people of GOD, but this one day shall stop, he shall be destroyed with the spirit of JESUS’ Mouth, and with the brightness of his coming (2 Thes.2:3). This passage is applied to the MESSIAH by the Jews.
*****Nor the son of wickedness afflict him . . . this is copied almost literally from: 2 Samuel 7:10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, (KJV) . . . The son of wickedness simply means all those who are wicked. CHRIST shall not fall into the hands, or under the power of wicked men, more than GOD would allow.
Psalm 89:23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. (KJV)
And I will beat down his foes before his face . . . in Judea, and in the Gentile world; especially in Pagan Rome. Those who do not submit to the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST shall be broken to pieces as a potter's vessel (Ps.2:9); for He must reign till all enemies are put under his feet (1 Cor.15:25). CHRIST shall destroy them: showing that the power of doing this was the power of GOD applied in His behalf. JESUS is GOD (Jn.10:30).
And plague them that hate him . . . them that refuse to have CHRIST reign over them (Lk.19:14, 27), the unbelieving Jews, and all the followers of Antichrist (2 Thes.2:10-12; Rev,13:8, 12; 19:20-21; 20:15), who are either overcome with the judgments of GOD, or with everlasting punishment to come (Mat.25:41, 46), with which they will be tormented for ever and ever (Rev.20:10-15) or dash them with a rod of iron (Ps.2:9), and with His wrath and vengeance strike them down to the ground, and to the lowest Hell (Deut.32:22; Ps.86:13). YES! GOD gets this angry!
*****The wrath of God shall be poured out upon wicked men beginning with the sixth seal of Revelation (Rev.6:12-17), and it shall continue through the seven trumpets in the first 3 ½ years (Rev.8:1–13:18) of Daniel's 70th week (Dan.9:25-27), and ending with the seven vials of the wrath of GOD in the last 3 ½ years of that week. This terrible wrath will be poured out upon the great whore and the ten kingdoms of the old Roman Empire territory in the first 3 ½ years (Rev.17), for their murder of Jews and Christians (those who have not accepted the mark of the Antichrist), and upon the Antichrist and those same ten kingdoms who are dominated by Antichrist in the last 3 ½ years (Dan.7:8, 23-24; Rev.Ch.13 and Ch.17). You do NOT want any part of the wrath of GOD! http://www.worldlychaos.org/w_c_1_truth_about_salvation.1.htm

Psalm 89:24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. (KJV)
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him . . . GOD the FATHER will be faithful and merciful to His SON. The attributes of the FATHER’S nature shall always accompany the SON. The faithfulness of GOD was, is and shall always shall be with the Man JESUS in executing the Promises made to Him regarding His work and power to do it. Even though there was no mercy shown to CHRIST, as the Security of His people, He was dealt with in mercy and strict justice as MEDIATOR of the Covenant, for the special mercy of GOD is always with Him, and every blessing of it, called the sure mercies of David (Isa.55:3; Acts 13:34); and is only communicated through CHRIST JESUS! He alone is the mercy seat (Dan.9:24; Heb.9:6-12; Tit.3:5) from whence the mercy of GOD is dispensed, and through whom GOD is merciful to mankind. Truth and grace are both with CHRIST, the Truth of the Gospel, and the fullness of grace . . . justifying, sanctifying, pardoning, adopting and persevering grace (Jn.1:14).
And in my name shall his horn be exalted . . . His horn or His glory, His power and dominion, of which the horn is a symbol. His glory is displayed in the same way as His FATHER, His Name expresses His nature, His being and His perfections. His Name, title and office KING of Kings, and LORD of lords; or His Name the Word (Jn.1:1), is the brightness of His FATHER'S glory (Heb.1:3) . . . the sense is, that, by the power of GOD, JESUS would be raised from the dead, and have glory given Him, and be exalted to GOD’S right Hand, and be made LORD and CHRIST. By way of the Gospel, His Kingdom and dominion would be spread in the world.
Psalm 89:25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. (KJV)
I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers . . . His Kingdom would be greatly enlarged. He shall have dominion of the seas, and the isles of the sea, and the rivers, the inland countries that are watered with rivers. The Kingdom of the MESSIAH shall extend to the Great Sea, and the Red Sea, to the river of Egypt and the river Euphrates (Ps.72:8). These were the promised boundaries of the land promised to Abram (Gen.15:18).
Psalm 89:26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. (KJV)
He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father . . . CHRIST shall appeal to GOD, He shall come to Him as a FATHER, and as His only hope and defense.
My God . . . CHRIST JESUS the Man, shall come to me as GOD, and shall recognize Me as His GOD, His only confidence and hope. GOD the FATHER is CHRIST'S own and proper FATHER, and CHRIST is the FATHER’S own and proper SON (Jn.5:18). JESUS often called GOD His FATHER (Jn.5:23; 8:54, 58; 10:30, 33; 14:9, 23; Phil.2:6; Rev.21:22-23; 22:1, 3), and declared Him to be in this relation to Him (Mat.11:25-27; Jn.5:17), addressed Him, called on Him and prayed to Him as such. It was GOD that chose CHRIST JESUS, His SON, to be the MEDIATOR, REDEEMER and SAVIOUR; Who made a Covenant with Him, His Chosen One; Who prepared and provided the human nature of CHRIST; anointed Him with the gifts and graces of His SPIRIT, supported Him in His sufferings and crowned Him with glory and honor. CHRIST loved His FATHER as His GOD, trusted in Him as such, obeyed Him, and prayed unto Him. CHRIST called Him His GOD and owned Him to be so (Jn.20:17). GOD is the FATHER of CHRIST, and since CHRIST is a divine Person; and He is the GOD of CHRIST, as CHRIST is Man: these two relations often go together in the New Testament.
And the Rock of my salvation . . . (Ps.18:2), GOD bore Him up while He was working out the salvation of His people; and although He was not saved from sufferings and death, He was quickly delivered from the grave, and raised from the dead, and set at the right Hand of GOD, where He shall reign until all enemies are put under His Feet.
Psalm 89:27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. (KJV)
Also I will make him my firstborn . . . CHRIST shall be regarded and treated by GOD as the firstborn son is in a family; with distinguished favor and honor (Gen.27:19; 29:26; Ex. 4:22; 13:12; Col.1:15, 18).
Higher than the kings of the earth . . . than any other kings, for He would be the most exalted among kings and rulers (Rev.19:16). This was fulfilled in King David, who occupied a pre-eminence among princes and rulers which no other king did: but the fact is that that David was the ancestor of the MESSIAH, the KING of kings, and LORD of lords (Rev.19:16); the prince of the kings of the earth (Rev.1:5), and the MESSIAH is greater by far than David ever was. This will take place when the Kingdoms of the Earth become His; when all people and all nations shall fall down before Him, worship Him and bring their riches and glory into His Kingdom (Ps.72:8-11).
*****GOD'S Covenant to David was that He would send One in his line. The Covenant centers on the Lord JESUS CHRIST. Of Him GOD says, I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. When GOD sent the Lord JESUS into this world, He came as the only begotten Son, and by His incarnation at Bethlehem He became the SON of GOD. Then He was revealed in His life of humiliation . . . GOD manifested in the flesh Isa.7:14; Mat.1:16, 20-23; Lk.1:31-35; 2:7, 11; Jn.1:14). After, He died a sacrificial death . . . the reason why He came from Heaven . . . He became in His resurrection, the firstborn, the first begotten from the dead. Dear one, this simply means that the scepter of this Universe is in nail pierced Hands of this KING. This Amazing KING is higher than the kings of the earth, for He is LORD of Lords and KING of Kings!
Psalm 89:28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. (KJV)
My mercy will I keep for him for evermore . . . for His spiritual body, His church, His people; for whom the stores of mercy are kept with Him, to be given in their regeneration, pardon, salvation and eternal life . . . for to them the mercy of GOD is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps.103:17-18). This can also be understood of the grace and kindness of GOD, His free favor and love to CHRIST, which always continues; because JESUS always was GOD’S dearly beloved Son (Mat.3:17;17:5; Mk.1:11; 9:7; Lk.3:22; 9:35; Jn.20:13), that lay in his bosom (Jn.1:18) from eternity, in whom GOD was well pleased, and always will be.
And my covenant shall stand fast with him . . . (2 Sam.7:14-16; 23:5) the Covenant being made with Him as the Head and Representative of His people, remains and will remain sure, firm and immoveable. Its blessings are sure mercies, and its Promises and all that is in it are what makes it firm and steadfast, is owing to its being made with CHRIST, and being in His Hands, Who is the SECURITY, MEDIATOR and MESSENGER of it.
Psalm 89:29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. (KJV)
His seed also will I make to endure for ever . . . meaning David’s descendant (Ps.132:11; Mat.1:1), shall occupy the throne (Ps.89:4, 14, 29, 36, 44; Ps.93:2; Isa.6:1; 9:7; 16:5; 22:23; Dan.7:9; Rev.5:13; 6:16). David’s descendants could have occupied the earthly throne, IF they had been faithful to GOD, and had not departed from Him . . . but this verse refers to Him Who is the Successor of David, in His spiritual Kingdom, the Lord JESUS, the One and Only MESSIAH (Isa.9:6-7).
And his throne as the days of heaven . . . this specifies a great length of time (Deut.11:21; Ps.72:5; 89:28-29), it means endless constancy and faithfulness, because the throne of CHRIST is for ever and ever, and will still exist when the present earth and heavens are fled away (Ps.45:6; 89:29, 36-37; 93:2; 145:13; Dan.2:44; Lk.1:32-33; Heb.1:8). CHRIST JESUS is upon His throne in Heaven, right now, for He is the same with His Holy FATHER (Jn.10:30), and here He shall sit and reign, till all enemies are put under his feet (1 Cor.15:25), and He will be on a throne of glory when He judges the world for the period of a thousand years (Rev.20); and, after that, He will be on the magnificent, great white throne (Rev.20:11-15) where He shall judge the wicked. His throne shall be as the days of heaven. Psalm 72:17-19 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed. 18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. 19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen. (KJV)
*****His seed also will I make to endure for ever . . . this can apply only to the spiritual David. The descendants of David are long since dead, or blended with the remaining Jews as to be utterly undetectable . . . but JESUS lives, and His seed (TRUE Christians) are spread over all nations; and His Throne is eternal. CHRIST JESUS is of the house and lineage of David; and the government is upon His shoulders, and of its increase there shall be no end (Isa.9:7).
TRUE Christians: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
Psalm 89:30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; (KJV)
If his children . . . His descendants; the same as the seed mentioned before, the children of the MESSIAH.
Forsake my law . . . this does NOT say: if He forsakes, because CHRIST will NEVER forsake His TRUE children! It is supposed that the seed might forsake His Law or fail to keep it; but there is still the assurance that the power would not permanently depart from the descendants of David, but that it would be restored ultimately to that line, and would be permanent and eternal (2 Sam.7:24-26).
And walk not in my judgements . . . if they commit iniquity and depart from the holy commandments delivered to them; I will chasten them with the rod of men, they shall have affliction, but his government shall not be utterly overthrown. See: 2 Sam.7:14-16.
Psalm 89:31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; (KJV)
If they break my statutes . . . break, the Hebrew word means to defile, pollute or profane . . . the idea is, IF they mock and scorn the laws; IF they consider them as nothing to be concerned about, or IF they treat them with contempt as a polluted or defiled thing. It is in this way that the vast majority of mankind (Mat.7:13-14) regard the commands of GOD. They treat them with absolutely NO respect; they really class them with things that are polluted, and that should be avoided as defiled and defiling.
And keep not my commandments . . . IF they do not regulate their conduct by My Laws, it is sin against Him and it displeases and angers Him. GOD’S commandments should be honestly kept, with great affection to them, from a source of heart-felt love to the LORD, considering His glory and His power, and trusting and depending upon our obedience to them; for they are not grievous (1 Jn.5:3), and in keeping them, there is great reward (Ps.19:11) . . . whereas a contrary behavior displeases and angers GOD.
*****There will be considerable wrongs in the subjects of CHRIST'S Kingdom. His children may forsake GOD'S Law (vs.30) by omissions, and break His statutes (vs.31) by commissions. Many corruptions are in the bowels of the church, as well as in the hearts of those who are the members of it. This particular list of offences, may be committed by the children of GOD, to show that all kinds of sins may be committed by them; sins of omission and commission; sins against the law, and sins against the Gospel; and that these, although they are observed in a way hereafter mentioned, yet all can be forgiven, all but the unpardonable sin (Mat.12:32; Mk.3:28-29; Lk.12:10). http://hisservants.org/hard_mark.3.28-29_h_s.htm
Psalm 89:32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. (KJV)
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod . . . the rod of men (2 Sam.7:14); the LORD using men to chastise His people, as He did of the neighboring nations of the Jews, when they sinned against Him. The Targum is, I will visit their transgressions by the hands of the tribes of the ungodly. The LORD chastises in a kind, humane and moderate way, in measure, in judgment, NOT in wrath and hot displeasure; or in like manner as a man chastises his children, which is in love (Deut.8:5).
And their iniquity with stripes . . . the word stripes means properly a stroke, a blow; or judgments or calamities such as GOD sends on mankind as a punishment for their sins (Gen.12:17; Ex.11:1; Ps.38:12).
*****GOD has two ways in dealings with His backsliding and offending people: (a). One is to show His displeasure at their conduct, or to chastise them (Heb.12:5-11; Rev.3:19); (b). The other is to regather the wandering ones back into the fold (Jer.23:3-4). ALL who have been truly converted, all who are His TRUE children will be recovered, even though they fall into sin . . . but it will be done in such a way as to show His great displeasure at their offences. I truly believe in Once Saved Always Saved. IF a person is truly saved, they are saved FOREVER!

Psalm 89:33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. (KJV)
Nevertheless my lovingkindness . . . lovingkindness is mercy, compassion, kindness, favor.
Will I not utterly take from him . . . GOD will not utterly cast a TRUE child of GOD off, nor will He make His lovingkindness void. He would not, nor did not take His lovingkindness from CHRIST when He needed it so desperately, when He was obeying, suffering and dying, for JESUS always was and always will be the dear SON of His love . . . nor will He ever take His lovingkindness from all those that are in CHRIST, loved and chosen in Him, from all those that are His spiritual seed (vs.29-30). Those who are His dear children have the love of GOD with them, and therefore there can be NO separation from His lovingkindness, nor will it ever depart from them, nor will it ever be utterly taken from them, although at times the signs of it are withdrawn from them because of sin. Dear one, the love of GOD is constant and unchanging; nor is it removed when GOD afflicts and chastens His people; for He chastens only those that He loves (Heb.12:5-11; Rev.3:19), chastisements are because of love, and in love . . . He loves them as He chastens them. The Covenant once made would be accomplished; the Promise given would be carried out.
Nor suffer my faithfulness . . . GOD’S faithfulness was pledged in the Covenant or Promise. For if it were to fail, that would make it a lie, and GOD CANNOT LIE (Tit.1:2). GOD will NEVER prove false, nor will He ever deal falsely in any pledge which He has made. In making good His actions to CHRIST, in keeping the Covenant made with Him, and in fulfilling His Promises to His people; even when He afflicts them, it is always in faithfulness to them. He will not suffer them to be afflicted above what they are able to bear (1 Cor.10:13), and will support them under it, and deliver out of it (Ps.119:75-76). GOD is always faithful in what He has promised.
*****Romans 8:33-39 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (KJV)
Psalm 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. (KJV)
My covenant will I not break . . . break, the Hebrew word means to defile, pollute or profane
(vs.31). GOD will NOT pollute, defile nor profane the Covenant. GOD says that He will not do in regard to the covenant as they had done. This is not the covenant at Sinai, as some say, but the Covenant of grace made with CHRIST, and which stands fast with Him (89:3), which is firm and sure and as immovable as mountains.
Nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips . . . any Promise of GOD, respecting either the temporal, spiritual or eternal welfare of His people, He would not change, for He changes not (Mal.3:6) . . . not in His nature, not in His perfections, not in His love and affections, not in His counsels and purposes. His Covenant and Promises have an unmovable success; whatever He has spoken shall be accomplished (Lk.1:20, 45). GOD will NOT modify its conditions or withdraw it mid-stream. It shall be done exactly as He spoke it. When GOD makes a Promise, it shall be done, exactly as He has stated!
Psalm 89:35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. (KJV)
Once have I sworn by my holiness . . . a single oath, once, once for all. To swear by His holiness is to pledge His Holy nature; if this would not be accomplished, or if He would fail, it would prove that He was not a Holy GOD. That has never happened, and it never will! Because God swore by His holiness (which is rare), but when He does, it immediately adds more weight and authority to His Words (Ps.60:6; 108:7; 110:10; 132:11; Am.4:2).
That I will not lie unto David . . . GOD will not lie to anyone! It is impossible that He would lie, for that would contradict and deny Himself. It is contrary to His being a Holy GOD, it opposes WHO He is! He is not a man that he should lie (Num.23:19; 1 Sam.15:29). It totally disagrees to His character as the GOD of Truth (Deut.32:4; Ps.31:5). Our Holy GOD will not lie, not in His counsel nor Covenant, not in His purposes nor His Promises. Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: (KJV)
*****This is said to be sworn once, which word sometimes implies the completeness, certainty, and irrevocableness of the thing said or done. CHRIST is said to have died or suffered once (Rom.6:10; Heb.9:26, 28). Because GOD swore by His holiness; which GOD seldom does, but when He does, it instantly adds more weight and authority to what is said (Ps.60:6; 108:7; 110:10; 132:11; Am.4:2).
Psalm 89:36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. (KJV)
His seed shall endure forever . . . His children, this confirms His oath of what He had said before (89:29), which can be understood either of the determination of actual believers, of all those of the spiritual seed of CHRIST; or of the duration of the church throughout all ages. GOD never swears to unimportant things; but when He does swear, it is to remove the doubts of His people, and to rest their minds.
And his throne as the sun before me . . . His throne shall continue as long as the sun does. It shall be as bright, splendid and glorious as the sun. The Targum is, and his throne light as the sun before me, meaning His church and Kingdom, of which the throne is a symbol, and which became so in Gospel times, clear as the sun (Song 6:10), when day began by the rising of the Sun of righteousness (Mal.4:2) and by the bright shining of the Gospel ministry. CHRIST shall appear in the latter day, with a rainbow on his head, and his face was as the sun (Mat.17:2; Rev.10:1), when the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun seven fold, as the light of seven days (Isa.30:26); and when the city (the church), will have no need of the sun, nor of the moon (Rev.21:23); and too, in the ultimate glory when the saints will shine as the sun in the kingdom of GOD (Mat.13:43).
*****His seed shall endure for ever . . . this can apply only to the spiritual David. The posterity of David are long since dead, or blended with the remaining Jews as to be utterly undetectable . . . but JESUS lives, and His seed (TRUE Christians) are spread over all nations; and His Throne is eternal. CHRIST JESUS is of the house and lineage of David; and the government is upon His shoulders, and of its increase there shall be no end (Isa.9:7).
TRUE Christians: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
Psalm 89:37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. (KJV)
It shall be established forever as the moon . . . either CHRIST'S seed, or His throne, which are much the same, for both mean His church and people, His Kingdom in the world. The moon is as eternal as the sun (Ps.72:5, 7, 17), and is used elsewhere to indicate the continuance of the people, church and interest of CHRIST, for even though the moon has changes, sometimes full, and sometimes in the decline, yet always is, and always will be. The heavenly bodies are permanent objects, so they are the symbols of stability and endlessness.
And as a faithful witness in heaven . . . or in the sky, some understand this of the moon, others of both sun and moon and stars. The Covenant of GOD made with all creatures, that He will no more destroy the world by a flood (Gen.9:11-13), and is a symbol of the Covenant of grace, and of the continuance, perpetuity, and immutability of it (Isa.54:9-10).
Selah . . . Selah is a word used 74 times in the King James Bible . . . 71 times in the Book of Psalms and 3 times in Habakkuk. Different interpretations are given: possibly a musical mark or instruction on the reading of the text, maybe something like stop, look and listen; or it could be . . . it is so for it cannot be anything else; because the LORD hath sworn that He shall have an everlasting Kingdom. It seems to this humble servant that selah is similar to amen in some ways.
*****David will have a SON who will sit on the throne of this Universe. That fact is as established as the moon is established in the Heavens, and the Bible says nothing about removing the moon at any time. GOD will make good His covenant with David.
A Disastrous State Lamented,
Prayer for Amends (89:38-52)
Sometimes it is not easy to reconcile GOD'S wisdom with His Promises, yet it is certain that GOD'S works always fulfil His Word. When the Great Anointed One, CHRIST JESUS Himself, was on that cross, it seemed that GOD had cast Him away . . . but it did NOT make void His Covenant, because that was established forever. The honor of the house of David was lost. Thrones and crowns are often laid in the dust; but there is a crown of glory reserved for CHRIST and His spiritual seed, which fadeth not away (1 Pet.1:4; 5:4). GOD'S being unchangeable and faithful assure us that He will NOT cast off those whom He has chosen and made a Covenant with. Those who are faithful to CHRIST shall be criticized for serving Him (Mat.5:11-12). The scoffers of the latter days, in like manner, disbelieve the Coming of the MESSIAH when they ask, Where is the promise of his coming? (2 Pet.3:3-4). The records of the LORD'S dealings with the family of David, show us His dealings with His family, the church, TRUE believers. Their afflictions and distresses may be grievous, but He will NOT cast them off. TRUE believers rely on Him for encouragement in the path of duty, and in bearing their cross (Lk.14:27). Psalm 89 ends with praise, even after this sad complaint. Those who thank GOD for what He has done, can also thank Him for what He will do. Those who are true to GOD, He will follow them with His mercies and grace, because they follow Him with praises. Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. 16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (KJV) . . . This is wisdom!
Psalm 89:38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. (KJV)
But thou hast cast off . . . GOD has treated Him to whom these promises were made, as if He were vile and detestable, as that which one throws away because it is worthless or offensive.
Objections begin, to what is said before, and swore to; even to the everlasting love of GOD to CHRIST, and to His seed (TRUE believers), to the unchangeable and unalterable Covenant, and to the ongoing and endlessness of the Kingdom and Gospel church of CHRIST, taken from the dealings of the LORD with the MESSIAH and His people.
And abhorred . . . not that GOD hated the Person of CHRIST, for He was His own SON, His own beloved SON; nor did He hate His afflictions and sufferings (Ps.22:24), which were a Sacrifice of a sweet smelling savour to Him (2 Cor.2:15).
Thou hast been wroth with thine anointed . . . with the MESSIAH, the true MESSIAH, the Son of David. This is to be understood of CHRIST, not as GOD’S own SON, who was always the object of His love, but as the sinner's surety, bearing the sins of His people, and all the wrath and punishment due to them; and so is reconcilable to the Promise, that lovingkindness would not be taken from Him (89:33).
Psalm 89:39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. (KJV)
Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant . . . His servant David (89:3), not the covenant of circumcision, nor the covenant at Sinai, which were made void at the death of CHRIST; but the Covenant of grace and redemption made with CHRIST, which it was promised should stand fast, and never be broken (89:3-4), but was thought to be null and void when the REDEEMER was in the grave, and all hopes of redemption by Him were gone (Lk.24:21), but so far was it from being so, that it was confirmed by the sufferings and death of CHRIST; and every blessing and Promise of it were ratified by His Blood, the blood of the everlasting covenant (Heb.13:20). David had dealt with GOD as if there were no covenant; as if no such promise had been made to him. Made void means to detest, hate or reject.
Thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground . . . by allowing it to be cast to the ground, and used contemptibly; as when JESUS was crowned with the crown of thorns and the purple robe (Mat.27:29; Mk.15:17; Jn.19:2, 5). This seemed inconsistent with the Promise (89:27), that He would be made higher than the kings of the Earth; and yet it was so. GOD highly exalted His SON, made Him REDEEMER and SAVIOUR and LORD, and crowned with glory and honor, and set Him far above all principality and power (Eph.1:21), and far above every name that is named in this world or that to come.
Psalm 89:40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. (KJV)
Thou hast broken down all his hedges . . . this indicates that of fields or vineyards, where all the fences, the walls, and the hedges are thrown down so that the vineyard become open to all. All his walls or defenses around the church (Ps.80:12) all that he relied on for safety. This presents a striking contrast to the radiant promises, and is mournfully sad proofs of a loss of GOD'S favor. To cast off and reject GOD is absolute stupidity! (1 Chron.28:9; Ps.43:2; 44:9; 71:9).
Thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin . . . towers, fortifications; defenses the same as above, the Gospel church of Christ, which seemed to be so well built and fortified. The enemy has been allowed to destroy them.
*****Thrones and crowns are shaky and wobbly things, and often crumble in the dust, but there is a crown of glory, and it is reserved for CHRIST and His spiritual seed (89:29-30) which shall NEVER fade away. GOD is always faithful to His TRUE children. Psalm 94:14-15 For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance. 15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it. (KJV)
Psalm 89:41 All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours. (KJV)
All that pass by the way spoil him . . . the idea here is about the same as in Psalm 80:12, where it indicates that the fields or vineyards, where all the fences, walls and the hedges are thrown down so that they become open to all. CHRIST’S church and His members are really CHRIST Himself, when made a devastation by the persecutors. The enemies gladly spoiled their goods (Heb.10:34). The TRUE Gospel church of CHRIST can indeed be spoiled, and a multitude of false teachers, world-wide, who are the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines (Song.2:15), do this each and every day. They are sneaky seducers, who spoil the peace and comfort of Christians, with damnable heresies (2 Pet.2:1), through philosophy, vain deceit and vile commandments of men (Mat.15:9). CHRIST Himself may be said to be spoiled, when He is blasphemed and robbed of His Good Name, and He is also spoiled by false teachers, who rob Him of His deity, His Holy and eternal Son-ship, and when He is trodden under foot, and His precious Blood (1 Pet.1:18-19) counted as an unholy thing (Heb.10:29). This applies to those that so use Him, those that do not walk in the right way; but go out of it, choosing their own way. They ignore and reject the right way, they are unbelievers that transgress, and want no part of CHRIST and His doctrine (2 Jn.1:9).
He is a reproach to his neighbours . . . the wonderful Name and Personality of the Man JESUS (Jn.1:14) was hated and criticized by the Jews. His own countrymen (Jn.1:11), called Him a glutton and a winebibber (Lk.7:34) and represented Him as a notorious sinner (Lk.7:39); said that His miracles were done by Beelzebub (Mat.12:24, Mk.3:22; Lk.11:15); and His teaching as a hard saying (Jn.6:60), which opposed common sense. They treated CHRIST as an object of ridicule, as if He were forsaken by GOD; as if He were cast out and despised.
*****Why hast thou then broken down her hedges . . . this indicates GOD removing His Presence, His power and His protection from Israel; which was as a hedge He had set around them, by which they were secured and defended from their enemies. But with the hedge gone, they became an easy prey to the enemies (Job 1:10). The hedge around the church and people of GOD are the angels that encamp around them (Ps.34:7; 91:11; 103:20. Heb.1:7, 14). The angels and the LORD Himself, are as walls and fortifications to GOD’S people; who is as a wall of fire around them (Zec.2:5); which wall may be said to be broken down when He withdraws His Presence and His angels. When the LORD does not apply His power to protect them; they are wide open to the persecutions of men. With the hedge being broken down, all passengers and travelers pluck the fruit in the vineyard as they pass by, there being no hedge or fence to keep them away. When the Jews abandoned GOD, they fell into the hands of their enemies; because GOD had removed His protective hedge from them. A lesson here for us today.
Psalm 89:42 Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. (KJV)
Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries . . . GOD allowed their enemies to become powerful and prevail against them . . . as did the wicked Jews, the devil and his principalities and powers, at the time of CHRIST'S arrest, crucifixion and death, for then it was their hour of the power of darkness (Lk.22:51-54). Death had power over the Man JESUS (Jn.1:14), and held Him under that power for a while. His enemies, the Jews and the Roman government took turns in condemning Him to death (Jn.19:6, 15-16). Even though the devil bruised CHRIST'S heel, yet CHRIST bruised his head, destroyed his works, and he himself, and that JESUS dying; He spoiled his principalities and powers; for death could not hold Him, neither does it have any dominion over Him, for death is brought to an end by Him . . . and the Antichrist and all the anti-Christian powers, shall in the latter day be destroyed by Him (Rev.20:10).
Thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice . . . they rejoice in the success of their plans; in their triumphs over GOD’S Servant and over His people. JESUS’ enemies did this when they had gotten Him on the cross; and more so when He was laid in the tomb (Mat.27:60), and as the anti-Christians will when His witnesses are slain (Rev.11:10), but their joy was short lived, and was soon turned into sorrow, so too will be that of all those who are against CHRIST.
*****Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (KJV) . . . It shall bruise thy head . . . the serpent’s poison is in its head; and a bruise on that part is fatal. As a result, the fatal stroke which Satan would receive from CHRIST, was something he did not understand would be the extent of his doom. Thou shalt bruise his heel . . . the serpent bruises the heel that crushes him, meaning that the devil was permitted to afflict the humanity of the Man JESUS and bring suffering and persecution to His people, which shall continue until the LORD puts him in his proper place (Rev.20:10).
Psalm 89:43 Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle. (KJV)
Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword . . . Thou hast turned it away, so that when it is raised to strike, it does not fall on the object aimed at. The meaning is that the enemy had not been successful in battle, for the sword had been dulled and could do no killing. In the latter days, CHRIST will smite all the anti-Christian nations; and all those that escape the battle of Armageddon shall be slain with it. Rev. 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. (KJV)
And hast not made him to stand in the battle . . . all enemies of JESUS shall fall, being delivered up into the hands of wicked men, of justice and death; and yet, by His dying, He put away sin, He finished it (Jn.19:30) made an end of it, and destroyed it. He conquered Satan, and led him captive; overcame the spite and malice the world and its prince; and abolished death itself (2 Tim.1:10).
Psalm 89:44 Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. (KJV)
Thou hast made his glory to cease . . . glory = brightness, splendor. The devil really did think that he caused the brightness of JESUS to cease. He really thought that the glory, the magnificence connected with Him had been destroyed, or had come to nought . . . but the glory of His deity, even though it did not cease, yet it seemed to cease, being covered and out of sight, and seen by only a very few. The glory of His Humanity was made to cease, in which He was fairer than the children of men (Ps.45:2), and His visage was more marred than any man's and His form than the sons of men (Isa.52:14), and the glory of His offices, prophetical, priestly and kingly were belittled, contradicted, disputed and rebuked by the Jews (Mat.26:68; 27:28-29; Mk.15:18-19; Jn.19:2-3, 14-15). The enemies of JESUS tried to cast His throne to the ground, but it did NOT work out as they had planned . . . for He is now upon the same throne with His Father, and will sit upon a throne of glory when He comes to judge the world (Rev.20), and so too in the New Jerusalem church state for all eternity (Rev.21 & 22).
Psalm 89:45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah. (KJV)
The days of his youth hast thou shortened . . . His days of joy and pleasure were shortened when His sorrows and sufferings came, and GOD seemingly hid His Face from Him. The Lord JESUS was indeed a Man of sorrows (Isa.53:3) and was well acquainted with grief all His days. He did not live out half the time of man's age, which is threescore years and ten (Ps.90:10). He died at the age of about thirty three . . . but He was resurrected and He lives and He shall live for ever more. The Man JESUS has length of days for ever and ever (Ps.21:4), even though His days were in one way shortened, yet in another way they are and will be prolonged . . . His own and all those who are of His spiritual seed, according to the Promise of GOD (Isa.53:10).
Thou hast covered him with shame . . . has clothed Him with shame and disgrace (Ps.69:7-8). Everything that happened to the Man JESUS, indicates shame and disgrace, and GOD’S divine displeasure . . . His Face was covered with shame and spit, from which He did not hide (Ps.22:24), but now He is crowned with glory and honor. Selah (Ps.3:2-4).
Psalm 89:46 How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire? (KJV)
How long, LORD? . . . how long will this continue? Will this continue always? When GOD hides His Face from His people, even for a little while, it seems like a long, long time, a kind of eternity . . . and so it seemed to the Man JESUS. What He endured, when His FATHER hid His Face from Him, seemed as an eternal absence (Ps.13:1; 77:7-9).
Wilt thou hide thyself for ever? . . . Thyself , Thy favor, Thy grace, Thy kindnesses. The absence of the FATHER’S Presence seemed like a long, dark eternal night. GOD not only seemed to hide Himself from the Lord JESUS, but it seemed He had set Himself against Him as well, and in truth, when JESUS went to the cross on OUR behalf, GOD the FATHER really DID turn away from His SON, because GOD is so holy and so pure that He cannot look on sin . . . and JESUS was absolutely polluted with the sin of the world (Mat.20:28; Jn.1:29; Acts 13;39: 1 Cor.15:3; 2 Cor.5:21).
Shall thy wrath burn like fire? . . . GOD’S wrath did burn like fire (89:38) when CHRIST bore the sins of His people, and all the punishment due unto them. The strength of the Man JESUS was dried up like a potsherd (Ps.22:15), when He was sacrificed on the cross for us; all which is totally consistent with GOD'S everlasting and unchanging love to Him, as His own SON.
*****Fire is something which entirely consumes. GOD’S wrath is like fire which never stops as long as there is anything to burn; GOD’S wrath is like a fire which never puts itself out, but which completely destroys that on which it preys. Sin is what sets GOD’S wrath ablaze! Unless there is repentance of sin, the fire of GOD’S wrath will eventually send all unrepentant persons to an everlasting lake of fire (Rev.20:15). HELL, the lake of fire is very real!!! BEWARE!!! http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_hell_is_it_there.htm
Psalm 89:47 Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain? (KJV)
Remember how short my time is . . . time means duration; lifetime (Ps.39:5). In this world man's time here is but a short time; his life is but a vapor, which appears only for a little while. His days are as an handbreadth (Ps.39:5); they pass away like a tale that is told; the common term of life in the Bible is threescore years and ten (Ps.90:10).
Wherefore hast thou made all men in vain? . . . none of the sons of men are made in vain; for they are all made for the glory of GOD, whose end is answered, some one way, some the other, in every one of them . . . there is either the salvation of them by CHRIST, or the just destruction of them through their own sin. Even though life is short and afflictions many, men are not made in vain, especially those who believe in CHRIST JESUS; because for them to live is CHRIST (Phil.1:21), because they live to and for His glory. No matter if they live a long time or a short time, they live to and for the LORD; and when they die, they die to Him (2 Cor.5:6, 8).
*****If there were no future state after this life, there might be reason for a question or complaint; but since there is an eternal condition and state AFTER this life . . . either of bliss or woe: and since there is such a thing as the redemption, justification and salvation of any of the sons of men, through the sufferings and death of CHRIST, which would NOT be without His resurrection from the dead, we have no cause to think we were created in vain. CHRIST JESUS was delivered for our offences, and is risen for our justification. THANK YOU JESUS!
Psalm 89:48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. (KJV)
What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? . . . what man is it that shall not die? To see death is a saying often used to mean death itself. Death is here represented as a real object, now invisible, but which shall happen to one and all. I think what is meant here is, that all men are mortal, from the richest king down to the pauper on the street. ALL will one day face death! Every living person must die; as sure as a man lives, so too is it sure he shall die . . . be he strong and mighty, weak and sickly; high or low, rich or poor, prince or peasant, righteous or wicked . . . all persons of all ranks and conditions, age or sex, must die; for all have sinned; and it is the appointment by GOD that they should die. There are very FEW exceptions; as Enoch (Gen.5:24) and Elijah (2 Ki.2:11), and those that will be found alive at CHRIST'S Coming at the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18; 1 Cor.15:51-58).
Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave . . . NO one is able to deliver himself from going down into the grave or from coming under the power of death. Death or the grave declares a universal power over ALL mankind, No one can be rescued from that mighty power.
Selah . . . (Ps.3:2-4).
*****CHRIST without a doubt undertook and has promised to redeem His people from the power of the grave. His people believe that they shall be delivered (Hosea 13:14). CHRIST did die, but He rose again (Ps.16:10; 30:3. 49:15; 71:20. 86:13; Isa.25:8), and He shall one day raise us up from the grave as well (Phil.3:20-21; 2 Cor.4:18; 5:1, 8; Eph.2:6, 19; Col.1:5; 3:1-3; 1 Pet. 1:3-4).
Psalm 89:49 Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth? (KJV)
Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses . . . there are marvelous spiritual blessings that are found only in CHRIST; the grace said to be given to us through Him; the guaranteed mercies such as redemption, justification, forgiveness of sins and eternal life can come ONLY through CHRIST JESUS! These wonderful blessings are so called because they flow from the free favor and love of GOD, and which were former or ancient ones, that were promised and secured in CHRIST before the world began (Jn.1:1-3); springing from the love of GOD.
Which thou swarest unto David in thy truth? . . . these spiritual blessings were promised to CHRIST, the seed of David, and that with an oath (89:3, 35-36), by the truth and faithfulness of GOD, for the certainty of it . . . but how will all these wonderful spiritual blessings take place, if CHRIST did not rise not from the dead? If CHRIST was not resurrected, WHO would redeem His people? (Isa.53:10; 1 Cor.1:30; Eph.1:7; Col.1:14). WHO would justify His people? (Rom.5:1, 9, 18; 8:30, 33; 9:30; 10:4). WHO would forgive the sins of His people? (Rom.4:7; Eph.1:7; Col.1:14; Heb.8:12). JESUS did die, but He was raised, He was resurrected! JESUS lives! CHRIST rose from the dead, and He became the firstfruits of them that slept!
*****To many people who had departed from GOD at that time and today, it looked as if GOD had forgotten His covenant. But He had not forgotten His Covenant. GOD is faithful. GOD has the Man, JESUS (Isa.7:14; Mat.1:25; Lk.2;7; Jn.1:14; Gal.4:4) to sit on David's throne.
1 Corinthians 15:12-23 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. (KJV)
Psalm 89:50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people; (KJV)
Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants . . . the apostles of CHRIST, His servants, and the servants of the living GOD, showed the way of salvation to people, other servants that believed in CHRIST followed them, these were now reproached by the Scribes and Pharisees for believing in Him, and professing Him; and were scoffed and laughed at, when they had crucified Him, and laid Him in the grave, thinking they had victory over Him, thinking that He would never rise again. BUT . . . CHRIST JESUS was not only a MAN (Isa.7:14; Mat.1:25; Lk.2;7; Jn.1:14; Gal.4:4) . . . He was/is GOD! He was/is the well beloved SON of GOD (Mat.3:17; 12:18; 17:5; Mk.1:11; Lk.3:22; 2 Pet.1:17).
http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_is_jesus_god.htm
How I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people . . . the religious and civil rulers of the Jews, their chief priests, Scribes and Pharisees had poured out abundant and multiple condemnations on the followers of CHRIST. The unbelievers did it then and they do it today. JESUS warned His people that it would happen. John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. (KJV) But . . . He also encourages us to hang in there! Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. (KJV) . . . What a Promise we have when we are faithful to JESUS!
*****To bear in the bosom is the same as bearing it on the heart. Trouble, anxiety, care, sorrow, seem to press on the heart, filling the bosom with sad and painful feelings. The reference here is not only to accusation and criticism, but means everything that pertained to the people came down hard on Him, crushing Him. The burdens of His own people, as well as the rebukes of all those around Him, came on Him; He felt that He was not able to bear it. Let us always remember that no matter how great the persecution against us is, no matter how great the
criticism of even the most mighty people . . . they are powerless against Almighty GOD!
Romans 8:8-9 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (KJV) . . . What a Passage this is! And once we receive the HOLY SPIRIT, GOD will NOT take Him away. This is only one reason that I believe in OSAS! Once saved, always saved! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/OSAS_1_eternal_security_h_s.htm
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (KJV)
Psalm 89:51 Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed. (KJV)
Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD . . . have reproached Thee and Me. They reproach the character and cause of GOD the FATHER, and reproach JESUS for having trusted the Promises which seem like they are not fulfilled. Since CHRIST JESUS was representing GOD’S cause, He was compelled to bear all the reproaches, and it broke His Heart.
Wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed . . . or Thy MESSIAH, as some say, which was not as soon as expected, was scoffed at and ridiculed by wicked men (Mal.2:17), but it rather plans the actions, ways, works and especially the miracles of CHRIST, which were admonished, either as done on the Sabbath day (Mat.12:1-2; Mk.2:24; 3:2; Lk.6:7; 13:14; Jn.9:14-16), or by the help of Beelzebub (Mat.12:24; Mk.3:22; Lk.11:15), and He was criticized in His kindest actions to the bodies and souls of men, as a friend of publicans and sinners (Mat.11:19; Lk.7:34), and Himself as being a sinner (Mat.11:16-19; Lk.5:29-30; 7:34, 36; 14:1).
*****This seems to have a specific view to the latter part of JESUS’ life, His sorrows, His sufferings and His death. I think it was the time when He hung on that horrendous cross, He was, in the most disrespectful and rude manner, reviled and reproached by His enemies. The last plea is taken from the disrespect of His enemies and the humiliation and shame done to GOD'S Anointed One (89:50-51). Remember, LORD, the reproach, and let it be rolled away from us and returned on our enemies. (1.) GOD'S servants were reproached, and the abuses done to them reflected on their Master, because it was for serving Him that they were reproached (Acts 9:4). (2.) The reproach cast upon GOD'S servants was a very grievous burden to all that were concerned for the honor of GOD. (3.) It was the enemies of CHRIST who reproached the servants of CHRIST. (4.) They had reproached the footsteps of Thy Anointed One.
Applying this to CHRIST, the One and Only MESSIAH, they Jews reproached His footsteps, and the slowness of His Coming. They reproached the delays of the MESSIAH, but, because He had not yet come to deliver them out of the hands of their enemies, when they had none to deliver them, they thought that He would never come. They gave up looking for Him, just as the scoffers of these days do. People reproach the footsteps of the MESSIAH when they ask, Where is the promise of his coming? 2 Peter 3:3-4 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. (KJV)
The reproaching of the footsteps of the Anointed One, some refer to the serpent's bruising the heel of the seed of the woman, or to the sufferings of CHRIST'S followers, who walk in His footsteps, and are reproached for His Name's sake.
Psalm 89:52 Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen. (KJV)
Blessed be the LORD for evermore . . . glory, honor and praise to the LORD always. This Passage stand for total agreement and approval of Almighty GOD; perfect confidence in Him; knowing that He is always faithful, right and true. It is an example of the faith which those who are truly righteous have in GOD, in all circumstances and at all times, of their trust that He is worthy of their complete confidence, and should always to be praised. Only when a person has true love and devotion to the LORD will he be able to say, Blessed be GOD.
Amen, and Amen . . . this seems to be added to express the wish and faith of the psalmist. It is repeated to signify the fervor and passion of the same. This ends the third part of the book of Psalms.

The Certainty of Death
Death is the well-traveled road of all mankind. Death comes to ALL living things.
(1). Both the good and the bad are taken away by death. Both the righteous and wicked by death, pass into another state . . . the righteous into the blissful everlasting life (Jn.3:15-16, 36), the wicked into eternal agony (Mat.25:41; Rev.20:15). So it is that both the righteous and the wicked are equally accountable to the laws and decrees of GOD. Both the wheat and the tares standing and growing on the same ground, are mowed down together at the harvest (Mat.13:25-30). None of us know when OUR harvest will come. Are YOU ready for death?
(2). Death shows no mercy to rank or condition of men. The richest man in the world, the wisest king, as well as all subjects shall at their time be called to this fatal blow. The lofty cedars and low shrubs, magnificent palaces and mud huts are all the same here.
(3). Death favors no age. Sometimes the infant is no sooner born, that he is sent to the grave. Both old and young submit to the law of death. The old may be said to go to death, but death also comes to the young.
(4). Death makes no distinction between sexes. Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel, Elkanah and Hannah, Lazarus and the rich man equally submit to the laws of death. Both the richest man in the world and homeless man on the street will meet death one day.
(5). There is NO place where death does not and cannot enter. Some have been seized at their work, some in the streets, others in their shops, some in the market, others in retirement homes. There is absolutely NO privileged place where death cannot find us, and so, no matter where we are, when our number is called, we shall be found. Spring, summer, fall or winter, all seasons are made use of by death. Death can come in the day, in the night, in the morning or in the evening, in time of work or leisure, in times of calamity and prosperity, death can invade.
Advantages that are with those that live with continuous outlook of death.
(1). Knowing death will come makes a soul exceedingly careful in duty (John 9:4).
(2). Knowing death will come make a Christian extremely serious, and passionate in the exercise of his duty (Ecc.9:10).
(3). Knowing death will come, knowing that we all must die, will help Christians to be horrified at the wickedness of this present world (Rom.1:22-32; 1 Cor.5:10-11; Gal.5:19:21).
(4). When a Christian believes that he must die, it is a great control to keep him from sin (Job 31:13-14).
(5). When a Christian lives knowing that he shall once see death, it will make him very patient under every trouble he encounters.
(6). Knowing death will come teaches the person to study wisdom (Ps.90:12).
(7). Knowing death will come makes a Christian very careful in preparing for death.
(8). Knowing death will come is not as terrible to a Christian as it is to the wicked when it comes.
Are you prepared to die?
(1). To die well and in the LORD is difficult. You are to die only once; and if you do not die right, there is no way to mend it or re-do it.
(2). All those who die in the LORD are pronounced blessed (Rev.14:13).
(3). Your labors on Earth shall end, but your works shall not be forgotten; which is a wonderful advantage if you have loved and served the to the best of your ability.
(4). Death may come upon you when you are not aware; you do not know when death might surprise you, so you should let that press you to prepare for death.
(5). After death, judgment shall come. If you are a stranger to CHRIST JESUS before death, you shall appear before this ALMIGHTY JUDGE, a stranger to Him (Rev.20:11-15). If you are a born again Christian by faith in what JESUS has done for you, you are His Friend (Jn.14:15; 15:14): therefore I implore you all to prepare for it.
Preparing for death.
(1). Be prepared for death each and every day, for it is really is preparing for Heaven, for you know not when death may come to you.
(2). Keep in mind the wonders of Heaven (Jn.14:2-3; 1 Pet.1:3-5).
(3). Always keep a good conscience, void of offence towards GOD and man.
(4). Always do any known duty; do not break any promise.
Things to Consider
- IF Heaven is a real, literal place, then maybe Hell too is an actual, literal place.
- IF Hell is real, is it really worth the chance that you might spend eternity there?
- IF you could KNOW for certain that you could go to Heaven, would you want to know how?
HOW CAN YOU GET TO HEAVEN??
First of all, you must know that Heaven is NOT a reward for good behavior, and Hell is NOT a punishment for misbehavior. You could NEVER stock up enough "good points" in your entire lifetime to get you access to Heaven. God clearly tells us our "righteousnesses are as filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6). So, considering this gruesome fact, how do we get in the Door of Heaven?
Well, my friend, there is only ONE Door (Gate) into Heaven and that is Christ Jesus, the Son of Almighty God. Without Him, only Hell awaits.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. [KJV] Jesus' Words.
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. [KJV] Jesus' Words.
The Bible clearly tells us Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Yes, "but how many of my sins" you might ask. ALL of them! The Bible also clearly tells us that we ALL are sinners, and that we ALL will receive death (eternal death, or Hell) without Jesus.
