The Book of Zechariah
Chapter 14
The Second Coming of Christ, the Messiah
This last section, chapters 9-14, deals with prophetic burdens. The first burden, deals with the prophetic aspects connected with the First Coming of Christ (Zec.9 through Zec.11). In this division (Zec.12 through Zec.14), we have the prophetic aspects connected with the Second Coming of Christ. In this final chapter, Zechariah seems to gather everything together for us.
There is a very definite program given to us in the Book of Zechariah. We had the ten visions, then the historic interlude, and now this last division of prophetic burdens. Zechariah always starts where Israel was at that particular time, and they were always in a certain amount of difficulty. Chapter 13 leaves us with the national conversion of Israel when the nation will turn to God and there will be a pouring out of the Spirit of God. All of this prepares the way for the return of Messiah, because at that time, Zechariah makes it clear that they have entered the Great Tribulation period.
Chapter 14 follows the entire program that has been given to us in Zechariah. The prophet leads up to the establishment of the Kingdom at the Second Coming of Christ. In each of these major divisions, Zechariah always encouraged the people of that day, and looks on into the future by outlining a prophetic program.
Some things to consider in this chapter: #1. It is totally prophetic. #2. It has no prophecy which is being fulfilled in today's world. #3. It should be interpreted literally if possible. In interpreting prophecy or any Scripture, you cannot take verses out of context. This chapter is entirely prophetic, looking out into the future. It does NOT apply to New Testament times, and the "remnant" that is spoken of here, is clearly a JEWISH remnant.
The Destruction of Jerusalem . . . Zec.14:1-2
Zechariah 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. (KJV)
Behold, the day of the Lord cometh . . . when the Lord comes, it shall be both in His spiritual and Personal reign; for this is NOT His First Coming in the flesh. "The day of the Lord" . . . is the Great Tribulation, the day which the Lord has appointed for punishing the sins of His ancient people. "Cometh" . . . NO one can stop it from coming! It shall overtake them, O sinful, unthankful, bloody Jews, who despised and murdered the Messiah! His Coming shall make the Jews realize their horrible error of the past, and His Coming shall convert them.
And thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee . . . all that they possess, shall become a prey to their enemy. This shall be a terrible time for Israel, and all people!
Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (KJV)
For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle . . . this is speaking of that which shall take place in "that day" the Great Tribulation. The prophet Joel speaks of this (Joel 3:2-11); Ezekiel also spoke of the "many people" (Eze.38:6,15,22), which shall come under Gog. "I will gather" . . . God will summon His army . . . the "nations" really do it themselves because of their joint hatred of Israel. "All nations" . . . the revived Roman Empire, with Antichrist as their leader, which shall at that time have complete rule over all the nations of the world.
The apostle John foretells of a universal strife at the end.
Rev.16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (KJV)
Rev.20:7-9 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. (KJV)
NO creature anywhere, at any time, can do anything unless God allows and wills it. Satan's frenzy against God's people, is His instrument against them (Dan.11:35-45; 12:10-11).
And the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished, and half of the city shall go into captivity . . . this will be the time when the outward court shall be given, to the Gentiles, "the great whore" (Rev.17:1-6); the two witnesses shall be slain, and their enemies shall rejoice and send gifts to one another (Rev.11:2). This will be a very trying time, and such a time of trouble as has not been known (Mat.24:21).
And the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city . . . there is a small remnant of the Jews according to the election of grace, always has been, always shall be. Christ will reserve a seed for Himself in that horrible time, as He has always done. This cannot refer to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, for then all the inhabitants of the city were cut off, or carried captive, and none left. This has to refer to what will happen in the Great Tribulation when the army of Gog shall come against Jerusalem in the latter day; though these circumstances are not mentioned in Ezekiel. Gog and Magog: (Gen.10:2; 1 Chron.1:5; 5:4; Eze.38:2; 39:6; ch.38 & 39; Rev.20:8-9).
Some say that Gog is the same as the "little horn" of Daniel 7 & 8, meaning the Antichrist. I disagree to some extent. I believe Gog and Magog are nations or kingdoms that are 'haters of God and His people,' that shall be under the thumb of the Antichrist. But, my friend, I am not the Bible scholar that some are . . . or claim to be. I am just a humble servant of my Lord Jesus.
The "little horn" in Dan.7:8 is still out somewhere in the future, and he is one and the same as the "beast" (the Antichrist) in Rev. 13 . Scriptures proves this fact!
#1. Both are conquerors (Dan. 7:8, 20-24; Rev. 6:1-2).
#2. Both speak blasphemies (Dan. 7:8,20-26; Rev. 13:5).
#3. Both prevail against saints (Dan. 7:21-25; Rev. 13:7).
#4. Both control the ten horns (nations) (Dan. 7:20-25; Rev. 13:1; 17:12-14).
#5. Both change the times and laws (Dan. 7:11,21-27; Rev. 13:17).
#6. Both are slain and given to the burning flame by the same Person and at the same time (Dan. 2:44-45; 7:9-11, 18, 25-27; Rev. 19:11-21).
#7. Both reign over the ten horns (nations) "until the Ancient of days comes . . . and the saints possess the kingdom" (Dan. 2:44-45; 7:8-11, 18, 21-22, 25-27; Rev. 17:12-14; 19:11-21).
#8. Both are destroyed at the Second Coming of Christ (Dan. 2:44-45; 7:9-14; Rev. 19:11-21).
#9. Both continue for the same time period (Dan. 7:25; Rev. 11:2-3; 12:6, 14- 13:5- 19:11-21).
#10. Immediately following both, the Kingdom of Heaven is set up (Dan. 2:44-45; 9-14, 21-27; Luke 1:32-35; Isa.9:6-7; Rev. 19:11-21-20:1-6).
#11. Both come out of the ten kingdoms and subdue three others (Dan. 7:7-8, 23-24; 8:8-9, 20-24- Rev. 6:1-2; 13:1-5; 17:12-17).
#12. Both rise "after" the ten horns (nations) (Dan. 7:7-8, 23-24; 8:23; Rev. 13:1-7; 17:12-17).
#13. Both are kings of fierce countenance (Dan. 7:8-25; 8:23; Rev. 13:1-18; 17:12-17, 2 Thes.2:8-12).
#14. Both cause craft (deceit, treachery,witchcraft) to prosper (Dan. 7:8, 20-26; 8:25; 2 Thes.2:4-12; Rev. 13:1-18).
#15. Both exalt themselves (Dan. 7:8, 20-26; 8:25; 2 Thes.2:4-12; Rev. 13:1-18).
#16. Both fight against Christ at His Coming (Dan. 7:20-25; 8:25; Rev. 17:12-17; 19:11-21; 2 Thes.2:8-12).
#17. Both shall be destroyed "without hand" (Dan. 2:44,45; 7:9-11, 22-27; 8:25; Rev. 19:11-21; 2 Thes.2:8-12).
#18. Both do according to their own will for the same length of time (Dan. 7:25; 8:24; 11:36; 2 Thes.2:8-12; Rev. 13:5-7).
#19. Both will be alive at the Second Coming of Christ (Dan. 7:11, 8:22-25; 9:27 11:40-45; 2 Thes.2:8-12; Rev. 19:19-21).
#20. Both will cause the Great Tribulation (Dan. 7:21-27; 8:23-25; 9:27; 11:40-45; 12:1,7; Mat. 24:15-31; 2 Thes.2:1-12; Rev. 7:14; 13:1-18; 14:9-11; 15:2-4; 20:4-6).
#21. Both will do away with the Jewish sacrifices in Jerusalem (Dan. 7:25; 8:24; 9:27; 11:35-45; 12:7; Mat. 24:15).
#22. Both will reign from the Jewish temple in Jerusalem (Dan. 8:9-14; 9:27; 11:45; 12:7- 2 Thes. 2:4; Rev. 11:1-2; 13:1-18).
#23. Both will disregard the God of their fathers (Dan. 7:11; 19:25; 8:22-25; 9:27; 11:38-39; John 5:43).
#24. Both will worship Satan and get their power from him (Dan. 8:24; 11:35-45; 2 Thes.2:8-12; Rev. 13:1-4).
The Coming of Christ, the Graces of His Kingdom,
and the Restoration of Jerusalem . . . Zec.14:3-11
Zechariah 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. (KJV)
Then shall the Lord go forth . . . the Lord Jesus is in Heaven at this time, at the right Hand of God. The Lord Jesus "sits" at the right Hand of God the Father (Mk.16:19; Lk.22:69; Acts 2:33; 5:30-31; 7:54-56; Rom.8:34; Eph.1:18-23; Col.3:1; Heb.1:3; 8:1; 12:2; 1 Pet.3:22). BUT . . . He IS coming again! He shall "go forth" out of His place in Heaven, and come as the King of kings, and Lord of lords, described as a Mighty Warrior (Rev.19:11-21).
And fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle . . . "at the Red Sea" when the Lord fought for, Israel against the Egyptians (Ex.14:25-31). Ex. 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. (KJV) And afterwards against the Canaanites, when they entered the land of Canaan under Joshua (Josh.5:13-6:27). Thus Christ shall judge, and make war in righteousness, and overcome those that shall make war with Him; and with the sharp sword that goeth out of His Mouth, He shall smite the nations, and with a rod of iron, He shall rule them, and break them "to shivers" (Ps.2:9; Rev.2:27; 12:5; 19:15).
Zechariah 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. (KJV)
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives . . . in verse 3, the Lord is said to come forth to fight for His people. This 4th verse tells us where He will take his position, or make a stand . . . on Mount Olivet, because of its situation, its height, its nearness to Jerusalem and the Temple, and last but not least . . . Jesus left to go to Heaven from there, and He would come back again in "like manner." Acts 1:10-12 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. (KJV)
"And his feet shall stand" . . . He shall appear in full possession of the place, as a mighty conqueror, which He is! .
Which is before Jerusalem on the east . . . a geographical description of where this mountain is in respect to Jerusalem. It was "a sabbath day's journey" from it, about a mile (Acts 1:12) above.
And the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west; and there shall be a very great valley, and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south . . . do you SEE what this states? This is amazing! Half of the mountain shall move to the north, and half of it to the south . . . exactly as stated here! Great physical changes that shall take place are told to us here. Do you believe it? I hope that you do! There will be a great earthquake, and the Mount of Olives will be split right down the middle. Half of it will go to the north and half to the south. "Shall cleave in the midst thereof" . . . as if it were bowing to the majesty of Almighty God, Who stands upon it! This mountain will cleave (break or slice down the middle). The "mountains melted from before the Lord," at the very Presence of the God of the whole Earth (Judg.5:5), and here it shall split in two!
"And there shall be a very great valley" . . . Jerusalem today is surrounded by rough terrain. Mountain after rugged mountain . . . huge boulders and rocks. Going east to Jericho, again rough and rugged. But, in "that day" there shall be a "very great valley" because God says so! This valley is thought by some to be the same as "the valley of Jehoshaphat," called "the valley of decision," into which the Heathen, being awakened and raised, will be brought and judged (Joel 3:2,12,14). This speaks of a future time. This is NOT today.
Zechariah 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. (KJV)
And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains . . . to seek shelter and safety in them, "for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of His majesty," (Isa.2:19); whom "every eye shall see" (Rev.1:7). "And ye" . . . whom God doth in awesome power and majesty come to save, "shall flee to the valley of the mountains" because they are filled with dread of such strange things, so troubled at the convulsions of the earthquake and strugglings of nations against God and themselves, shall as in great fear, flee to find a place of safety and rest; shall flee to the valley which God had made. God's people will tremble before Him when He comes to save them. This represents a people wonderfully saved, and amazed at the methods of it.
For the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal . . . a name of a place not known; thought to be some distance away.
Yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah . . . two years before which Amos prophesied (Amos 1:1), and according to Josephus, was at the time when King Uzziah was stricken with a leprosy for invading the priest's office (2 Chron.26:16-21).
And the Lord my God shall come . . . the Lord Jesus Christ, Who IS truly God, and the God of His people; and Who will appear to be so at His Second Coming, which is here meant, by raising the dead, gathering all nations before Him, and separating them (Mat.25:31-34). Judge Jesus shall bring to light all secret and hidden things; judging the whole world, and executing the sentence on them; and taking His own people to Himself. The TRUE believers will have been removed BEFORE the Great Tribulation, when Jesus comes at the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18). They shall NOT go through the Great Tribulation (Rev.3:10; Jn.5:24; 1 Thes.1:10; 5:9; Phil.3:20; 2 Cor.5:6-8)
And all the saints with thee . . . the glorified saints, the spirits of just men made perfect by the righteousness of Christ (1 Cor.1:30; Rom.5:1), whom Christ will bring with Him (1 Thes.3:13; 2 Thes.1:7-10; Rev.19:8,14). Some say this means the angels of Heaven. Angels are NOT called "saints."
Zechariah 14:6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: (KJV)
And it shall come to pass in that day . . . in that day . . . the Great Tribulation period.
That the light shall not be clear nor dark . . . there will be a mixture of justice and mercy, mercy shall triumph over judgment. There shall be "darkness" and distress, but there shall be more "light" joy and peace than darkness.
Zechariah 14:7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. (KJV)
But it shall be one day . . . "one day" one that is unique. I think that this "one day" is the Great Tribulation (Jer.30:7; Mat.24:21).
Which shall be known to the Lord . . . ALL times and seasons are known to the Lord, but this "one day" will come under His special care and observation, and be under the direction of His special providence. "Known to the Lord" . . . this should restrain man's curiosity and teach us to wait on the Lord's own time (Ps.25:5; 27:14; 37:9,34; 59:9; 62:1,5; 123:2; Pro.20:22; Isa.8:17; 40:31; Hos.12:6; Zep.3:8).
Not day, nor night . . . not clear and full light as at noon; but not quite night or dark, as at midnight.
But it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light . . . at the close of this awful visitation (Mat.24:21), there shall be light. The light of the glorious Gospel shall go forth from Jerusalem. At evening, when other days end, it shall be light; this shall be all light and glory (Isa.58:8; Ps.97:11).
Climate changes, earthquakes: (Rev.4:5; 6:12-14; 7:1; 8:3-12; 9:1-2,17-19; 10:1-6; 11:6,19; 12:1-4,7-9; Rev.ch.14; Rev.15:1-4; 16:8,17-21; 19:11-18).
The great tribulation will be a period of devastating wars, pestilences and natural disasters. All the world and its inhabitants will suffer worse that ever known before (Mat.24:21), and the works of man kind will be utterly destroyed. Because of an extremely high death-toll, decomposing bodies remain unburied (Eze.39:11-15), and the collapse of medical services because electricity failure will result in pestilence and severe pollution. Situations will arise that will not be endurable, especially in densely populated areas. Natural resources will be rendered useless because of exposure to radioactive pollution, and will undergo much more damage because of a multitude of God-sent earthquakes, hailstorms, droughts and heat-waves. The horrendous earthquakes that God shall send shall cause death of thousands and turn complete cities will be turned into absolute rubble (Rev.6:12-17; 8:5; 11:13,19; 16:18-21).
WHO?? is behind all this destruction? Is it God's fault? Don't you believe that for a moment! It is Satan, the great murdering maniac and destroyer of God’s Creation. In the brief hour (or day) of the kingdom of darkness, he and his foolish followers will be let loose upon the Earth to fully reveal their deep evil desires. But, when they do this, the measure of their unrighteousness will be filled to the brim (Rom.2:5-6), and they will face their final doom (Rev.20:10). The greatest tragedy is that the fires of Hell are never full (Pro.27:20), that are prepared for the devil and his angels, shall also be the final destination of millions of deceived people (Mat.7:13-14).
Satan’s wars of total destruction will be waged in the second half of the tribulation (the last 3 1/2 years). At the beginning of the 7 year period (Dan.9:27), Antichrist will make a peace treaty with Israel, but mid way, he shall break that treaty and his murderous venture starts against the Jews whom he hates so much, and from that time, Satan shall be be barred from further access to the throne of God where he previously made accusations against Christians, day and night (Rev. 12:1-10). He will be filled with great wrath after being cast out of Heaven. In the brief remaining time at his disposal, he will use all his power to cause as much destruction upon the Earth as possible. Rev.12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. (KJV)
Antichrist enters the Great Tribulation (Rev.6) on a "white horse" but very soon changes to a red one, as he embarks on a course of extermination to turn the entire world into utter chaos and disorder. When the 42 months (Rev.13:5-7) come to an end, his horrific path of destruction will have stretched across the entire globe. Like Satan, the Antichrist will be a murderer who will absolutely delight in the death of God's people.
There are several indications that nuclear weapons will be used the great tribulation, and since we today know that they exist, it seems to be a certainty, because of (Zec.14:12), which could only be brought about by such atrocities.
The effect of nuclear warfare on the world will be disastrous to all natural resources such as water, air, soil and plants because all will be radioactive. Plants in radioactive soil absorb this pollution, and cattle and sheep that feed on it become polluted, and when humans consume their milk and meat . . . well, you get the idea. Sickness, misery and death will result among all living creatures.
The Lord warns against a homosexual lifestyle and prostitution. This is most likely the reason why no cure has as yet been found for Aids, despite intensive research by the best medical scientists in the world (1 Cor. 6:9-10; Rom.1:26-27).
During the end-time there will again, as in the days of Noah (Gen.6:5), a perverse and immoral generation of people who will submit their bodies to vile affections, be numbered by the Antichrist and even sell their souls to the devil for financial gain (Rev.18:13). The sinners in the Great Tribulation will harden themselves time and again, and refuse to repent in spite of the plagues sent by God. The hideous sores that will appear on their bodies, the excruciating heat, the famine and all the natural disasters, will cause them to blaspheme even more. (Rev.16:9).
Climatic changes shall take place (Lk.21:25-27). Besides earthquakes, there will also be cosmic signs and disasters that will strike the world from outer space. Meteor showers and asteroids that will cause devastation on Earth, clearly recognized as the judgments of God. Isaiah 13:9-13 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. (KJV) Also: (Isa.24:1-6; Mat.24:21-22).
How do you stand with God? Only Jesus can save you from this Great Tribulation period! TRUE believers will NOT go through the Great Tribulation (Rev.3:10; Jn.5:24; 1 Thes.1:10; 5:9; Phil.3:20; 2 Cor.5:6-8). Are you a TRUE believer: (Jn.1:12-13; 3:3-8,15-18,36; 5:24; 8:24; 14:6; Rom.8:9; 1 Jn.5:1-13).
Zechariah 14:8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. (KJV)
And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem . . . when the Gospel (Living Waters) shall be preached, and the days of dark ignorance and idolatry among the heathen, shall end. There shall be a great dispersal of Divine knowledge, and of the plan of salvation, which shall go out by the Jews (Rev.7). "Living waters" are not just springs and fountains that quench physical thirst, but "Living Waters" that give eternal life (Eze.47:1-2,6-12; the quickening, saving Truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with all its ordinances of purity. "Shall go out" . . . flow down as currents from Jerusalem.
Half of them towards the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea . . . "the former sea" is the Dead Sea, and "the hinder sea" is the Mediterranean. It seems that the earthquake not only split the Mount of Olives, but changed the seas as well. It seems that Jerusalem, which had been an inland city, will suddenly become a port town when Jesus returns. So, it seems to me, that the "Living Water" is both literal and spiritual. Water of life: (Ps.110:7; Isa.12:3; Eze.47:9; Jn.4:14; 7:38-39).
In summer and in winter shall it be . . . perpetually, without intermission or interruption, these waters would never dry up or ever lose their healing virtue. There will be no summer of persecution, nor winter of coldness and indifference to hinder the ministry of the Word coming out from Jerusalem (Eze.47:1; Joel 3:18; Rev.22:1-2).
Zechariah 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. (KJV)
And the Lord shall be King over all the earth . . . this refers to the spiritual reign of the Messiah! Christ in the latter day shall be the undisputed King. The "earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD" (Hab.2:14); His Kingdom will be "from sea even to sea" (Zec.9:10), from the east to the west, His dominion will reach to "the ends of the earth" (Zec.9:10). He shall be "KING of kings, and LORD of lords" (Rev.19:16). ALL the kings of the Earth in "that day" will become Christian, and submit to the rule of Christ. Christ as KING: (Isa.54:5; Dan.2:44).
In that day shall there be one Lord . . . there is just ONE Lord today as well . . . but this FACT is realized and owned only by TRUE believers. SO many today 'claim' that they are "Christians," but in reality, the majority are hypocrites (Mat.23). A TRUE "Christian" CANNOT live in sin! The Holy Spirit will NOT permit it. YES! We all sin (Rom.3:10,23), but when we own up to the disobedience, God forgives us (1 Jn.1:9). What I speak of is those 'professing Christians' who live together without being married; and those who think abortion is OK; and those who think homosexuality is just an 'alternative lifestyle.' I could go on and on, but you know what I mean!
There is coming the spiritual reign of Christ, and ALL false religions shall be GONE!

And his name, one . . . He shall THEN be recognized by ALL people unanimously as "One." In today's time, "there be gods many and lords many" (1 Ki.18:25; 1 Cor.8:5). BUT . . . in "that day" only Almighty God alone shall be worshipped.
This is another very marvelous Passage of Scripture. It refers to the Day of the Lord and to the FACT that the Lord Jesus Christ SHALL be King! In "that day" there will be ONE Lord and ONE language. Zep.3:9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent. (KJV)
I do not know which language this will be, but . . . does it matter? No! God put language as a barrier to mankind long ago (Gen.11:9). It shall be removed in "that day," meaning the Millennium and eternity. There shall be no barrier in eternity.
Zechariah 14:10 All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses. (KJV)
All the land shall be turned as a plain . . . all the land of Israel "round about Jerusalem" today is encompassed with mountains (Ps.125:2). But when the Lord Jesus comes back, these mountains shall become a plain. Believe it!
From Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem . . . Geba was a city in the tribe of Benjamin, on the northern border of the land (Josh.21:17), and Rimmon was in the tribe of Judah, given to Simeon on the southern part (Josh.15:32). So, according to God's prophet, Zechariah, the land between the cities . . . the whole land of Judah would become a plain. All high, uneven places, all rocky and barren ground, changed into fruitful vineyards. This too, I think includes all high thoughts and evil imaginations, shall be fruitful, humble and lovely, as pastures rich for its sheep (Ps.23:1).
And it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place . . . meaning Jerusalem, which shall appear to be high, since all the land around her will be a plain. "It shall be lifted up" . . . raised up out of the dust and rubbish to which enemies had brought her. She would never stay in that low state, because God has resolved to raise her. Jerusalem shall be rebuilt, shall be inhabited on the same place where it was formerly. Isaiah 2:2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. (KJV) Mountain of the LORD: (Gen.49:1; Num.24:14; Ps.2:8; 22:27-28; 72:8,17-19; 86:9; 68:15-16; Job 19:25; Isa.11:10; 27:13; 30:29; 49:6; 60:11-12; Jer.3:17; 23:20; 30:24; 48:47; 49:39; Eze.38:16; Dan.2:35,45; 10:14; Mic.4:1-3; Zec.8:3; Mal.3:12; Acts 2:17; 2 Tim.3:1; Heb.1:2; 2 Pet.3:3; Rev.11:15; 20:4; 21:10-27).
From Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate . . . Benjamin's gate was north-east.
Unto the corner gate . . . corner-gate was north-west. The gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Ephraim are the same, as is thought by some; the distance between that gate and the corner gate was four hundred cubits (2 Ki.14:13).
And from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses . . . Hananeel's tower was south (Neh.3:1), wine-presses were north (Song 8:11). To summarize, completely round the city.
Zechariah is bringing us to the end. Zechariah says that a great valley will go all the way "from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem." This means the hill country of the ancient tribe of Judah to the border of Simeon on the south. All that rugged terrain around Jerusalem is going to be smoothed out, and so it seems, Jerusalem will be elevated "and it shall be lifted up."
Zechariah 14:11 And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. (KJV)
And men shall dwell in it . . . in great numbers, in much peace and safety, and from generation to generation. The Messiah, the son of David (Mat.1:1), will now come!
And there shall be no more utter destruction . . . no more wars, no more desolations, no more killing (Isa.2:4). There will be no more curse in the Jerusalem state (Rev.22:3), which seem to mean; no cursed thing, nor cursed person, no curse or anathema denounced against any.
The plague of Jerusalem's enemies . . . Zec.14:12-15
Zechariah 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (KJV)
And this shall be the plagues . . . this could refer to one or more, or even all, of the seven plagues, which will be inflicted on those who accept the "mark of the beast" (Rev.13:16-18; 14:9; 20:4). It is the wrath of God against Antichrist and unbelievers: (Rev.15:1-16:21).
Wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem . . . all who have been enemies and persecutors of His church; and with which plague or plagues they shall be utterly consumed and destroyed.
Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet . . . Antichrist will be consumed with the "sword" of Christ's mouth (Rev.19:21); the flesh of the whore of Rome, which is her substance, shall be eaten and devoured by the kings of the earth (Rev.17:16); and her destruction will be in a moment, suddenly (Rev.18:9-10).
And their eyes shall consume away in their holes . . . this is a horrible, living death against the enemies of God that will take place. The Book of Revelation tells us that this will take place in the Great Tribulation period. Ebola Virus causes similar symptoms, and the effects of nuclear radiation that can literally dissolve flesh. This will occur when Gog and Magog surround Jerusalem (Eze.38 & 39; Rev.20:7-9).
The right eye of the idol shepherd shall be utterly dried up, and the kingdom of the beast will be full of darkness (Zec.11:17; Rev.16:10).
And their tongues shall consume away in their mouth . . . the tongues of Antichrist and his followers have blasphemed "against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven" and which tongues they will gnaw for pain, when the plagues of God are inflicted on them (Rev.13:5-6; 16:9-11).
Some Signs of the Coming Tribulation Period:
#1. The Knowledge Explosion: air travel, life support systems, internet, etc. (Dan.12:4).
#2. The Rebirth of Israel, on May 15, 1948, the United Nations recognized of the state of Israel (Isa.66:8-10; Mat.24:32-34).
#3. The Jews Will Return Home (Jer.23.7-8).
#4. Instant International Communication (Rev.11:3,7-10).
#5. Days of Deception (Jer.9:5; Mat.24:11-12,24-25; 2 Tim.3:1-7; Tit.1:10-11).
#6. Famines and Pestilence (Mat.24:7-8).
#7. Earthquakes (Zec.14:4-5; Mat.24:7-8).
#8. Wickedness: rejection of Christ, abortion, adultery, alternative lifestyles, assault, child abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, fornication, homosexuality, kidnapping, murder, parental abuse, rape, etc. (Gen.6:5; 19:4-5; Lev.18:10, 22; 20:13; Mat.24:38-42; Jn.3:15-18,36; 8:24; Rom.1:20-32; 6:14-15; 13:10; 1 Cor.5:1; 6:18; 2 Cor.12:21; Gal.5:15-21; Col.3:5-9; Eph.4:19; 1 Jn.5:10-13; Jude 1:7-8).
Punishment on the enemies of God and His people: (Isa.59:18; 66:24; Eze.38:1-39:29; Rev.19:17-21; 20:10-15). Sin will be deeply felt by the sinner in all its loathsomeness, clinging to him in a festering, putrid body. Gal.6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (KJV)
Zechariah 14:13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. (KJV)
And it shall come to pass in that day . . . when the seal, trumpet and vial judgments are poured out (Rev.ch.6-16).
That a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them . . . confusion, vexation and inclination to turn everything upside down, because of the just displeasure of God, and in revenge on them for troubling His people. "Shall be among them" . . . the bloody, cruel and insatiable enemies of Jerusalem. "A great tumult," or noise of killing refers to the earthquake, and the slaughter of seven thousand men of name, and the fright brought about by it (Rev.11:13).
And they shall lay hold everyone on the hand of his neighbour, and shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour . . . it seems there will be a revolution, with this "tumult," in several of the heathen nations. The kings of them "shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire" (Rev.17:16). "His arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened" (Zec.11:17). His hand shall be cut off by the hand of his neighbour, and the power of Antichrist shall be destroyed. Tumult, consternation: (Eze.38:21; Zec.12:4; 1 Sam.14:15,20). Sin is the cause of all quarrels on earth (Jam.3:15-16).
Zechariah 14:14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance. (KJV)
And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem . . . the Jews, especially the tribe of Judah. "Shall fight" . . . with courage and success. "At Jerusalem" . . . in the land of Judea, and also at Jerusalem.
And the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold and silver, and apparel, in great abundance . . . meaning the wealth of all the heathen; the nations round about them, who have by war robbed many nations, and now God gave it to the Jews. This could also refer to the riches of the "great whore" (catholic church), which is signified by the flesh of the whore, and by the flesh of kings, captains, and mighty men, which will then be eaten; they will be stripped and spoiled of all their substance (Rev.17:16).
Zechariah 14:15 And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague. (KJV)
And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass . . . the flesh of the horse is said to be eaten (Rev.19:18). As God destroyed much of the cattle of the Egyptians by hail, and murrain (Ex.9:3;18-19), so now shall it be with the livestock of these persecutors, they shall perish with their masters, just as the horses, and the horsemen, were drowned in the Red Sea (Ex.15:4).
And of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague . . . their beasts shall perish in like manner as themselves. The plague shall affect the very beasts belonging to the enemies. This plague will probably occur when Gog and Magog surround Jerusalem (Eze.38 & 39; Rev.20:7-9).
The remnant shall turn to the Lord . . . Zec. 14:16-19
Zechariah 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. (KJV)
And it shall come to pass . . . after the plague on man and beast is over.
That everyone that is left of all the nations which come against Jerusalem . . . meaning the remnant of the Jews, according to the election of grace, who will have been among the enemies of Christ and His people, but preserved when others will be destroyed. They will not only be frightened at the general destruction, but will be truly converted, and give glory to the God of Heaven (Rev.11:13).
Shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts . . . this remnant, every one that is left and are by grace reserved, shall submit to God's Hand and repent of their unbelief. They shall go up from year to year to worship the King, Messiah (Zec.14:9).
And to keep the feast of tabernacles . . . not literally, but spiritually, for all the Jewish feasts have been long since abolished, having had their accomplishment in Christ. This feast was originally kept in commemoration of the Israelites dwelling in tents in the wilderness, and was typical of Christ's incarnation, Who was made flesh, and tabernacled among us. So to keep this feast is none other than to believe that Christ came in the flesh.
The Jews had three original festivals:
#1. The feast of the passover, in commemoration of their departure from Egypt.
#2. The feast of pentecost, in commemoration of the giving of the law upon Mount Sinai.
#3. The feast of tabernacles, in commemoration of their wandering forty years in the wilderness.
This last feast is properly brought in here, to point out the final restoration of the Jews, and their establishment in the light and liberty of the Gospel of Christ, after their long wandering in sin and error.
Zechariah 14:17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. (KJV)
And it shall be, that whosoever will not come up . . . "But I thought this was the Millennium" you say. It is! BUT . . . the Millennium will be a great and the last time of testing those in this great multitude . . . a remnant of Jews, and many Gentiles too, who have turned to God. This is just like church membership. NOT all church members are Christians! Far from it! A person has to be a TRUE Christian to belong to the Body of Christ. Body of Christ: (Rom.12:5; 1 Cor.10:17; 12:13,27; Eph.1:23; 2:16; 3:6; 4:4,12,16; 5:23,30; Col.1:18,24; 2:19; 3:15).
So this period of the Millennium will be a time of testing to see IF those there are TRUE believers or just hypocrites (Mat.23). IF they "will not come up" to worship Christ, they are NOT TRUE Christians, be they Jew or Gentile.
Of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem, to worship the King, the Lord of hosts . . . all that refuse to worship the Lord with His true church, shall be spiritually poor.
Even upon them shall be no rain . . . to be understood spiritually of the love and favor of God, as compared to physical rain on dry land. When the grace of God comes in great abundance, it soothes, softens, cools, refreshes, and makes fruitful. "No rain" . . . is not to have this grace and is to be hated of God (Amos 8:11).
Whoso will not come up . . . if there be any neglect to worship the Lord, even upon them shall be no rain; they shall be punished with want of rain, and with want of the blessings which plentiful and seasonable rain produces, their land shall be barren.
Zechariah 14:18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. (KJV)
And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not . . . (Rev.11:8) to Jerusalem, the church of God; do not go there to worship the Lord, and keep His ordinances in their purity; nor walk as becomes the people of God, blessings are withheld.
That have no rain . . . have not the pure Word of God, and the ordinances, but only the traditions and commandments of men (Mat.15:9); these are the "doctrines of devils" (1 Tim.4:1), and "lies in hypocrisy" (1 Ti.4:2). Those without the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ, and continue so, shall be punished with the sore judgment of a famine of hearing the Word of the Lord (Amos 8:11-12).
There shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles . . . all who refuse to come up and worship the Lord, shall have the plague of want of water of the Word, a famine.
Zechariah 14:19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. (KJV)
This shall be the punishment of Egypt . . . this shall be the SIN of Egypt.
And the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles . . . this shall also be the SIN of any nation "that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles." Remember, keeping this feast is none other than to believe that Christ came in the flesh, that He is Who He said He was. It is BELIEVING God (1 Jn.5:10-12).
The Holiness of all that belonged to them . . . Zec.14:20-21
Zechariah 14:20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. (KJV)
In that day . . . after the destruction of Antichrist and all the antichristian nations, when the nations are converted to God(Zec.14:16).
Shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS TO THE LORD . . . as was upon the mitre of the high priest (Ex.28:36). Even the harness on a horse will be holy to the Lord, meaning everything will be for the service of God.
And the pots in the Lord's house shall be like the bowls before the altar . . . the pots that were used in the kitchens of the Temple, for the use of the priest, were not accounted to be sacred as the utensils closer to the sacrifices and altar. "Shall be like the bowls" . . . which received the blood of the sacrifices, and held it, until the ministering priest had finished his service, and sprinkled it as commanded: now these, as appropriated to be used nearer to the altar, were more esteemed as more holy; so should holiness in these days spoken of exceed the holiness of those former days. Everything in that day will be for the service of the Lord. Today we are living in a world where almost nothing is used for the service of God.
Zechariah 14:21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts. (KJV)
Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts . . . such will be the number of sacrifices and sacrificers, that the pots in the Lord's House will not be sufficient, and because of this, every pot in the city or land, shall be sanctified and devoted to holy uses.
And all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein . . . this means that there shall be a general holiness of the church in those times. There will be no difference in the vessels of the Lord's house, or any distinction of Jew and Gentile (Gal.3:28-29). There shall just be worshippers of the Lord, who shall offer up the spiritual sacrifices of prayer and praise to the Lord (Heb.13:15).
And in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts . . . no accursed nation or person, no one who makes merchandise of religion. All shall know that the Lord has greatest pleasure in upright and sincere love and holiness.
When were the Canaanites in God’s house? The Gibeonites were people who lived in Canaan and made a treaty with the Israelites (Josh.9:23,27). Some temple servants, who were neither priests nor Levites, returned after the exile in Nehemiah 7:26-56 and Ezra 2:43-54. The temple servants would be Gibeonites.
As it is impossible for all nations literally to come to Jerusalem once a year, to keep a feast, so this has to be symbolic. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is represented by the keeping of the feast of tabernacles. Every day of a Christian's life should be a day of the feast of tabernacles.
It is right and just for God to withhold the blessings of grace from those who do not participate in this "feast.' It is a SIN that holds its own punishment. Anyone who forsakes the duty, forfeits the privilege of communion with God.
There is a time of complete peace and purity coming to the TRUE church, Jews and Gentiles alike (Gal.3:28-29). People will carry on their lives, and their services shall be holy and sacred, upon the same holy principles of faith, love and obedience. Sincere holiness shall be dispensed, because there shall be an abundant pouring out of the Spirit of Holiness than ever before. There will be holiness even in common things. Our whole lives should be one constant sacrifice, or act of devotion. No selfish motive should prevail in anything that we do or say. Many of us are far from this state of holiness and purity today! This should be a 'wake-up' call to us.
